We were canoeing the Suwannee when a bad storm hit. There was a tornado warning. We stay in these screened in patios (so no walls). it was pretty scary. Now because of the hurricanes over the past several years, the patios are gone or need to be. The parks haven't cleared them out and rebuilt yet. I really want to get back out there. We hiked part of The Foothills Trail earlier this year and I pushed myself too much and it sounds crazy but it put me in kidney failure. I really want to go back and finish what we didn't for the End of Season, just not sure I can now. #KidneyInjuryFromHiking

At the end of my road is the Appalachian Trail...and the ridge top of NC/TN where the Overmountain Men crossed over during the Revolutionary War... Our Creek/River became catastrophic that day...the bridges, roads and homes were destroyed...the mountain folks are the ones who rebuilt & repaired the roads... Samartan's Purse came by yesterday to do an assessment of my home...they will be coming back to help... I'm in Avery Co...my son lost his car in the Toe River...he had barely escaped...he had been on the way to work that morning...I was alone that day riding the Storm....watching the Creek/River expand across road (which became a massive river) Seeing all kinds of things in the rushing river passing by...it was surreal...It had gotten 25 ft to my house...my basement flooded over 2 ft..My land had 2 major mudslides that came down & blocked the road...My chickens made it...but, unfortunately some of my neighbors were caught in mudslides...They didn't make it...They may never be able to find all the missing here in the mtns of NC... The men's Baptist church group w samaritan's purse helped my mom in Henderson County NC with her tree removal. I have been subscribed and fan of your. KZbin channel for years now, i'm a big backpacker and hiker and I live in henderson county, north carolina in between the pisga national forest and green river gamelands. I am also a member of CMC , carolina mountain club, we maintain AT trails in north carolina. WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL ALL OF OUR EVENTS UNTIL NEXT SPRING, AND THE FOREST SERVICE TOLD US THEY WOULD LET US KNOW WE GOT THE GO AHEAD TO GO BACK IN. sorry for the capital letters. I went twelve days without food or power longer than that, withhelp internet or cell service. And I consider myself extremely lucky just to be alive because there are many that are not and still missing. I am just about fifteen or twenty minutes from that cave air and shimmy rock, and I was in the it's like an apocalyptic warzone. Military helicopters everywhere.. it is the community and people here that have helped each other, along with the local churches and samaritans. Purse, my power was restored by power companies from New Hampshire. We are so grateful for the support. When my mom tried to apply for fema, someone from staten island NY, stole her info and applied. And she spent hours crying on the phone, trying to clue who she was and has not been approved and will probably get denied . I actually know of no one. That's actually I received any female money. I've heard one person has approved, but they have it proceed in mind, and the government basically not existed here. Don't believe the missing or death toll numbers. Because they are all inaccurate, they can only count the people that had been identified with death certificates.There are still thousands missing. And people still being rescued in the woods. Thousands of people are living in tents with makeshift heaters, and it is already snowing here. We are all still in shock. I wanted to thank you for your help and support. And I hope 1 day we will be able to meet on the trail. If you are in my area, please let me know because I would love to help and feel free to message me back and I will give you my email or phone number. Thank you again, Kelly

Im attempting a thru in 2025, but planned to start at the Southern end of the Shenandoahs for a flip flop. Little did i know my plans were to start just north of the devastation that would be Helene. Still plan on starting at Rockfish Gap in the Spring and coming back to head south in the late summer early fall to finish up at Springer. I plan on spending everything i can on the Southern third to support trail town establishments. I often wonder if the ATC says things to keep from being up for a lawsuit. I went to Harpers Ferry last year, excited to talk to someone about wanting to do a flip flop, and the volunteer did everything possible to discourage me from a thru hike. Told me to section hike instead. It really actually kind of pissed me off, but lit a fire under my butt for doing a thru in 2025. So i guess i should thank them for making me more determined, but it was very disheartening to hear the ATC discourage thru hiking. Someone mentioned that maybe it was to try and keep them from being sued, so maybe this is the same. They dont want to encourage people to hike and end up getting hurt and then getting a lawsuit. Unfortunately that can harm the people in trail towns financially.
@Ramdinohikes2 ай бұрын
That's a new one. Had not heard the ATC trying to discourage thru hiking.
@jsweevil2 ай бұрын
@Ramdinohikes may have just been that particular volunteer. She definitely told me I would get lost, or give up, maybe she was just putting her own issues on me. Doesn't matter though. It lit a fire, and got me moving. I'll definitely be attempting a thru next year.

I believe that these southern Trail towns will actually hope for hikers to be able to come thru and will work towards being able to accept them when hiker season starts as we are actually part of their economy now. I met a councilman from Erwin years ago...i am a two time thruhiker with, literally, thousands upon thousands of AT miles over 35 years....who told me that hikers bring tens of thousands of dollars into the ccommunity as they spend freely and that hikers are considered almost a necessity to the economy of the town! All I can say is that I truly hope that they WILL be open and able to provide services for thruhikers as 2025 is going to be my third thruhike of the AT and I would sorely miss these wonderful trail towns. When I first started hiking services were nonexistant😢...lol.... the only Hostel that was on the AT in the south was the Jesuit Hostel as you first walked into Hot Springs and the next hostel wasnt until you got to Damascus and the "Place" which is the Catholic church. Now they are everywhere😊😊😊😊. How things change😂 May God bless these towns so decimated!!!

Yes. They said on IG that they had some minor damages but had power back relatively quickly and were housing a lot of people who were on clean up crews and stuff.

Foothills Trail website is reporting heavy damage and is asking people to not hike it. Asking for help clearing the trail.

That's great they're asking for help!

What do you mean by Baxter summit “closure”? Can one not summit year round, even in the winter with a permit?
@Ramdinohikes2 ай бұрын
They close the trail season for a while in the winter until everything ices or snows over so the alpine plants don't get trampled.
