It's so strange for a "world championship" to have a tiebreak system that eliminates players tied for first without even giving them a chance. If there is a tie, all tied players should simply continue to play more rounds until there is no longer a tie. It's not a difficult idea to think of.

At least he is second in both classical and rapid, so under the old olympic rules (you get point based on the sum of the squares of all your positions, then lowest one wins) he would be doing very well with two second places, so 8 points total (two times 2 squared). Meanwhile Magnus won classical (1 point squared is still one) but got third place in rapid (3 squared is nine) and with 1=9=10 points Nepo would be ahead overall. Still depends on Blitz though. :)

(Copying a comment I wrote on Reddit because it seems not everyone knows about this) Caruana had no idea the tiebreaks were only the top two preformers of the tied players. Apparently, it wasn't well communicated to the players (nevermind being a bad system) as in interviews with NRK (Norwegian National Broadcaster) neither Abdusattorov nor Caruana indicated they knew the rules for the tiebreak beforehand. Carlsen himself said in an interview with NRK that he learned it during the tournament, and indicated that FIDE quietly changed the rules by saying "if my father and I don't watch like guarddogs then they fuck up every time". It's sad to see Caruana make this mistake over a ridiculous tiebreak system and poor communication between FIDE and the players. Also adding: Caruana said he drew against Nepo because the opening they played were a part of Nepo's preperation for the world championship classical and he had no weapon against it, as well as the position being completely drawn. He obviously would've played something different had he known about the tiebreak system, but he had no idea.

Poor excuse. Even I (genuinely) knew the rules as I read them on the FIDE website before the tournament and again whilst watching the stream when it became clear a tiebreak would be a possibility. The rules were known well in advance. The Buchholz tiebreaker system is widely used in chess so it’s not like it was some ass-pull out of nowhere rule. It’s absolutely amateur to “wait to be communicated” the rules rather than actively doing your own due diligence.

Getting FIDE to listen to criticism is liking yelling at a brick wall. Except that brick wall is a stupid brick wall. But the brick wall thinks it’s intelligent because it plays chess. When your best player has been complaining about bad formatting in the WCC for over a decade, it probably means there’s something wrong. When your best player a few years ago decides to protest the ridiculous format and refuses to play, it probably means something’s wrong. When all the grandmasters start complaining, maybe, just maybe something needs to be fixed.

I really feel like we don't need a playoff if we already have a tiebreak system. If the tiebreak decided the tournament, everyone would know about the rule and there'd be no confusion. It would also avoid situations where players make easy draws because all that matters is performing optimally. Not to mention that deciding a rapid event by blitz match is strange. I understand that for classical you need shorter time controls to decide it since in classical draws are more likely, but for a rapid event this is just silly.

There's a couple comments explaining it a LOT better. The story is that Fabiano drew with Nepo _not knowing_ he'd be excluded from tiebreaks and attacked FIDE over changing the rulebook when no one was looking. Nodirbek didn't know it would play out like this either. Bottom line is that FIDE didn't communicate with the players all that well and got called out.

With the rapid championship some gambits came out and some standard blitz/ rapid/ bullet openings came to show. Maybe some amazing content would be to do a series like: How to QGD like (instert super GM), or how to traxler like Magnus. You'd show the main line and some side lines like you did with your previous videos but with the extra spice of a super GM playing it aswell! It feels to me like the tiebreak system is used in a weird way. It is to say, why would you use it to decide who gets to play a playoff? If it works as it should, meaning it singles out the most deserving player(s), then I think you should use it to determine the winner straight away, the same way it is used to decide who gets third and fourth place. Otherwise, if you still think playoff is better (which I agree with), then you should either find a different tiebreak system or find a way to make all those who got first place (earning every single point, it's not like they were gifted any points) have a shot at winning. With this being said, congratulations to GM Abdusattorov. Drama or not, he had a great tournament.
@SupBlub
@SupBlub 2 жыл бұрын
Tiebreak system without playoff is good enough to decide the whole match. Its just better look for tv if the match get decided in a decisive game on the board. That good look disappears though when the 2 favourite children of the chess world get placed 3rd and 4th. The buchholz system has been used for decades and every player knew or could have known the rules.

@@antonnekipelov7027 yeah, that's the point. Since the tiebreak system works, you should probably just avoid the playoff entirely, which would have avoided any drama. But like this, it feels like you're not giving everyone a shot.
@riccardomartinelli5222
@riccardomartinelli5222 2 жыл бұрын
@@SupBlub agreed. But then, isn't it even a better look if you get several decisive mini-games? For instance, you could play Meltwater Chess Tour-style and have two mini-matches of 3+2 blitz with 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd, and then the two winners go for the final. It's ok to use the tiebreak system to determine who gets an advantage, not so right to use it to eliminate people who still played a very good tournament.

The most egregious part of the tiebreak system to me is the fact that it was blitz games. I understand having rapid games as a way to break ties in classical, because of the drawish nature of classical and time limitation, but in rapid you could absolutely play the playoff in rapid, and have a decisive result in a reasonable time to crown the RAPID chess champion.
