I don't really know all that much about any of these characters, but I get this vibe that he has outgrown that friend group and was only sticking it out because he still had love for them. They all seem extremely immature (much moreso than just in a playful and silly way), and he seems introspective and like he's in a growth period of his life. I think they're trying to tear him down not just for fodder, but perhaps because they actually resent his growth in the face of their own mental stagnation. Could just be me projecting some of my own experiences, but that's what it felt like.
