All great questions! We purposely kept the context a little ambiguous so this could act as more of a proof-of-concept/teaser for the feature-length version. But what I can tell you is that the feature is set in a reality not too different from our own. The “darkness” in question is the metaphorical manifestation of male fear towards female empowerment, which is definitely meant to be more symbolic than literal. Though the feature will certainly answer all of your questions - and more! 😉

The cinematography in this short is great, the retro 80s motel multi-colouring is always a good back up in any type of short let alone horror.

Thanks so much, Josh! Our DP (the fantastic Chris Saul) and I trialed various color combinations in prep and the cyan/pink pairing felt so strong. We only had one night to shoot this short and it happened to be on the shortest night of the year (typical!) because that was the only evening the location was available with our actor’s schedules. Because of this we opted for mainly battery-operated RGB lights (Asteras) that we could rig quickly around the gas station to give us some flexibility in the blocking and dial in the exact colors we wanted without needing to mess around with various gel combos, etc. Shooting on “fast” lenses (Zeiss Master Anamorphics) with softening filters also helped keep the colors dreamy and (hopefully) not look too over-saturated. We had a tiny lighting team of just 2 people but they absolutely killed it! We hope anyone reading this gets inspired to make bold color choices in their shorts, even with limited resources. These days with so many inexpensive yet awesome tools available, it’s definitely possible!

Dude absolute PERFECT blend of serious and funny...right there with the greats like From Dusk Til Dawn. Plus I'm LOVING the Brand New Cherry Flavor-type aesthetic. This is the kind of short that perfectly sells a feature: it says "we know what we're doing" on so many levels. The style, tone, and technical production skill obviously, but also "our budget only gives us a few minutes to show you something, so what we pick has to introduce and tease the world, it's gotta be complete in itself yet allow for fuller excavation." And this totally does. Love to support you in any way to getting a feature, miniseries, or whatever else made!

Never again, will I allow myself to think that a "dumb sounding title" makes a bad film. That was f*cking awesome. This short film brought back a classic horror catchphrase like "squeal like a pig" and made it so much better. Great acting from all four cast members. I loved it. The snake made me cringe a bit and also made me feel a sense of justice at the same time. As a pansexual dude, I've met a lot of handsy cat calling closeted dudes in dark areas of parks at night. I have witnessed first hand, what a lot of women deal with on dark nights like these. And this made me nostalgic of the knocked out assholes that slept in those parks those nights. Thanks for this. I needed that. I hope all of yall are doing well.
