I remember when my dog got her hind leg stuck between two fallen logs, and pulling it free, she disconnected the ligament on one side of her hock, completely. The vet said there were two choices, one, a $3000 surgery, two, an amputation at the hock. I didn’t have the money for the surgery and I was moving to the East Coast later that week. So I immobilized the hock with vet wrap, put my dog in my van, and took a ten day road trip to the East Coast. When I got there, she could walk on her leg. Within a few more weeks, I didn’t have to wrap it anymore. The ligament had somehow reattached, leaving only a small lump to show there had ever been a problem. My dog lived to be 17 years old and was sound on that leg the rest of her life. That taught me that the body has amazing healing properties. More than vets realize. I think Skelator will be just fine. And you saying that if not, he will be a pasture pet, shows me you are a true horse lover, not one of the fake ones, the horse users as I call them.

In 1995 I bought a 12yo TB gelding from an idiot family that thought a 16.3 HH horse would make a good barrel racer. A year later he became lame on his right fore. My policy for lame horses is to take them out of work and (unless the horse is obviously, painfully lame) wait 30 days before calling the vet. On day 27 one of my clients needed the vet for her horse, and as my horse was still off, I decided to have the vet look at him so I could split the call charge. My TB was checked out and his fetlock and pastern were radiographed. The vet said he strongly suspected a ringbone. The next day my boy was less lame, and by day 30 he was completely sound. I kept him for the rest of his life and he was never lame again: veterinarians ARE sometimes wrong. Also, that 30 day rule has saved me a good amount of money over the years!

I personally love the name Skeletor. That was my son’s favorite cartoon character many years ago. He said that name with such awe and reverence that those qualities spill over to the horse Skeletor for me!

Bone plates in the warmbloods (Hanoverians, Trakehner, etc) don't close off until they a about 6 years old, their brains don't really start working until then either :o) Think of them more as a TB style horse for physiology, mentally somewhere between TB and a QH (sorry they can be just nuts but in a nice way). Keep on with what you are doing and when he gets older maybe pony him on some hills to strengthen his hind quarters- never underestimate the value of hill work. I would imagine lots of physiotherapy style riding to develop and keep his muscles in tip top condition - getting him to bend his body going in circles, using his body, not just his feet. I like Buck Brannaman style ground work to strengthen their bodies before they are started and it gets them to use their bodies properly. Maybe a bit of body work on his hind quarters when the weather warms up?? Don't give up on him, those earlier video's didn't show any lameness so it is probably a bit of the cold and being locked up for the storm. You are doing everything you can so keep it up and trust your gut, you know your horses.

When i was younger i used to ride a Calabrese cross Andalusian my grandfather trained him ,but his brain must have been the size of a pea because he seemed to forget easily he was probably the most frustrating horse to work with in the early years ,when he was about five or six he started to act sensibly by the time he was eight we were doing eventing! He hold a very special place in my heart he lived until 28 which was a very good age xx

I’m not a fan of warmbloods and have never owned one, but I’ve worked at two different horse farms where they were bred and trained. One farm owner said that no horse is mentally mature before the age of ten and they both said that warmbloods mature more slowly than most of the other types of horses.

I was going to say the same thing. He probably won’t stop growing until he is close to 7-8 yrs old. My 8 yr old mustang just hit 16 hands and I got him 5 hrs ago at 15.2. He has a significant scar in his right glute. I noticed he short strided on that leg at the blm facility but gave him a chance anyway, he was the most terrified horse there. As a massage therapist myself, I follow patterns of dysfunction to find the root cause of pain and imbalance. I work on his actual muscles instead of the standard “releases” most horse therapists do. He has scar tissue inside that I can feel and he asks for me to break it up. I say let Skeletor be a horse turned out and growing on good food see what happens. Pain meds are scary tho, he needs to know when to not push himself. ❤😊

Be happy to send out those bright, happy thoughts your way! I'm kinda tearing up as I write this -- because I know that the vet's current prognosis broke your heart just a little. But.........!!! ..... Skeletor has proven already that he is one - tough - survivor. When you compare where he has progressed to --- from the awful, awful condition he was in when you rescued him -- you've got to believe he has the will to continue improving! Skelator does look much more fluid in those earlier videos so I’m with you in thinking this maybe one of those times the vet is wrong. Also, given all the options you outlined for your sassy, silly boy you’ve got Skelator covered ;) I love your zen-horse-sensibility-worry changes nothing, but it can be very hard to train ourselves to set it aside. I love your attitudes :)

Have faith in your horse! He'll tell you what he can and can't do. My heart horse was a Trakhener called Scooby, also a rescue. I was told he had a kissing spine and couldn't jump....He cleared EVERYTHING with at least 4 feet of air underneath him, he LOVED jumping! x

My equine vet(he had over 50 years as an equine vet) told me that growth plates on warmbloods often don't fuse until their 6th or 7th year. Given his past history I would have been surprised if Skeletor didn't show some issues when starting structured exercise. Just keep his nutrition tip top like you have been, don't let him over exert himself and give him time to fully mature and finish growing. If it's still a problem two years from now after he is done growing take him to a track vet and see if they can pinpoint the issue.

I agree. He has had a sudden bout of good growth (catch up growth AND normal growth) and hopefully is just going through growing pains - a lot and fast. I had a 6 month old Bernese Mtn dog with luxating patella on both sides. Everyone told me he would need surgery or would always be lame. I changed his feed to a low cal, low protein so he would grow more slowly, reduced exercise (no more hikes) and also had a vet administer ProLo shots in the joints. Those three things and a few months of time and he came out of it to never have problems again. Give Skeletor TIME.

I'm going with the theory that he "ate" those muscles to survive and now he had issues with using them overmuch before they are completely built back or regenerated (if regeneration of those tissues is possible). It fits with him being sore after stall rest. Like us if we're immobilized or restricted movement for whatever reason we're sore as our muscles come back into use. Like others have said, he just needs time. The body is an amazing thing given half a chance.

vets are great but they can be WRONG. I have a dog piled up in the floor who wasn't supposed to be here after a few days that was weeks ago. He's doing pretty good for a dog who wasn't supposed to make it..... We can't know everything and life is one big mystery... hope Skeletror's mystery is a long happy one.

From your experience you know legs, hoofs and lameness are a specialty.....so if you can; find a vet that deals with legs....like a race horse vet! I used one in Oregon years ago and it was well worth it.

I second this track vet recommendation. They are amazing when it comes to horse joints. Every large animal vet should be required to intern with a racetrack vet in order to graduate veterinary school.

Hi, my parents (and when I lived with them my) cat sustained a spinal injury, it had to be operated and over years progressively got worse. He was recently euthanized but that was after (10+) years of living with his restrictions (or disabilities). In the first years after his surgery he was completely fine, so we felt we def made the right desicion with the (high risk) surgery. In the last year quality of live became a huge factor. He was more restricted in his movement, he needed constant pain medication. But he was still very personable and happy. With the medication and care from my father he got to live a full life. Skeletor might be fine after a single course of meds, might be a yearly thing but life can still be the best thing ever for him😊

An Ojibwe pal (Chippewa) pal was discovered to have an extra bone in his neck (tall fella too, 6' 5") upon some X-raying he'd undergone, thereafter finding himself recurringly giving the regional medical establishment the middle finger, because they had taken to hounding him to undergo further examination for their ever-poxy research & development ;)

Vets aren’t always right. My gelding started not using his hind left very well going into his 4 year old year. I gave him some time off and it got worse. I had the vet out and she was convinced he had wobblers or EPM. EPM test came back negative and before taking him in for neck x rays for wobblers I had the senior vet come out and check him out. The senior vet didn’t think it was wobblers and found some swelling in his stifle. 30 days of stall rest with hand walking and we also discovered he had an abscess in the toe of that leg during that 30 days. He seemed fine after but after going back to light ground work he started reverting back again. I got his stifles and hocks x rayed and they came back clean so the vet had me focus on strengthening exercises. Three months of hand walking over raised poles and hill walking (thankfully where I keep him there is a good grade hill) and I was able to get back to riding. His quality of movement continues to improve. There is hope! Sometimes silly babies can do silly things and everything can snowball. Sometimes vets have a hard time saying I don’t know when there isn’t anything obvious to diagnose. Sending good vibes your way!

Ain't that the truth. When I took my Border Collie in because of obvious lameness in the hind end, he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I was of course devastated as the conversation meandered and she suggested euthanasia as the future humane option for my young dog. The presentation of dysplasia was so classically obvious there was no need for x-rays, she said. But in several weeks he was completely over whatever caused his symptoms and he never had a hip issue in the balance of his life. Obviously *not* dysplasia! My weeks of worry and sadness was caused by a flippant over confidence in her diagnosis and desire to skip x-rays so she could move on to her next appointment. 🤬

The vet gives a "textbook" prognosis for your given case, long term they can either get far better than expected or things can go the other way. Perhaps this lameness is due to his sudden growth spurt when he had proper nutrition onboard and his body needs to "catch up", either way you'll know what's best.

He survived this long with how emaciated he was. He is a fighter . He won't give up on living his life to the fullest. You will have him for a long time, positive thoughts always. Doctors are always practicing because it is not an exact science it's an art. The vets can give you all the options but it is up to the horses body what it will do. You just keep him healthy as you can give him lots of love and care and nature will do the rest. Sometimes there are no right answers what to do. The horse will tell you what he needs . Skeletor is my favorite hands down. I watch videos of this fitness gentleman kneesovertoesguy. He was told you'll never be a basketball player etc. But he developed these amazing excercises and he's teaching other athletes with great results. I was a professional dancer (ballet) I found isolated stretching kept me in shape taught it too. Maybe just maybe think outside the box for ways to strengthen Skeletor there must be answers that could help him. He has the heart Clever Cowgirl so find the secret like the kneesovertoesguy he didn't give up. Skeletor is a champion 🏆

Another comment of "Vets aren't always right." My previous vet significantly set back my horses treatment with misinformation. And while I am dealing with a completely different condition then Skelator has, I am confidant saying- listen to your gut, and look at the horse in front of you, day after day. Get a second opinion if necessary. I finally found an amazing group of experts and a vet that eventually helped heal my horse via their protocol and he is 100% sound and I have my horse back instead of being 6 feet under. I didn't give up and I know you won't either! It's great that you would be willing/able to keep a young horse as a pasture pet. It is a huge financial commitment. I love and look forward to your videos!

I too have had vets make countless mistakes with my many cats! But sometimes they were right, and for most of the times, I don't regret hearing their opinion, but sometimes they were horrificly wrong! Overall I found the men to be arrogant and uncaring, but I did find one woman vet to be that way too. The secret seems to be, whatever animals you have, educate yourself as well as possible about their general health, common ailments, and their specific illnesses and injuries. Take the vets' opinions into account, but if you are in any doubt whatsoever, get a second or third opinion. Give your animal tons of love, spend lots of time with them and listen to them, and use your own judgement. It seems the illnesses and injuries only ever happen when we are already overburdened by family or work, never when we have the luxury of time. But it's really important not to rush any decisions. They need to be carefully thought out, so you know you are right. Don't let the opinions of others influence you. It's important to be with them, and to just sit or lie together as much as you can, unless they find you an unwelcome annoyance, as my last cat did. I think she was in pain. When I've been in great pain I also found the presence of people, with their noise and movement, to really increase my sensitivity to the pain and/or nausea. This why cats almost always hide when they are very sick. It can be taken as a sign that the time for goodbye has come, but that also depends on other factors. Unless they are in extreme pain, don't rush any decisions. But do what's right for them, not for you or anyone else. Sadly, almost all animals, including ourselves, die in quite a lot of pain. And owners tend to wait too long to say goodbye, making it worse. It's perfectly understandable though. In so many ways that's the toughest choice I ever had to make. But Skeletor is just a young guy. He's so far away from any life or death decision, as long as his health is well managed, he has many happy years ahead. ❤😉🐴🐎🐴😉❤

I find that I have less pain and stiffness if I get the right amount of exercise. Maybe you can develop a rehab-style exercise routine for him that strengthens those weak hip muscles. I wonder is there are any horse-physiotherapy members of the group to share ideas, or if something is available on line. Don't give up hope-- Skelator is a miracle horse already, and he has found his 'good luck' with you. ❤️

If Skeletor's future is to be a pasture pet, he'd be a nice one. I love his personality. And there's so much beyond riding he can do that makes him a perfectly worthwhile horse. With a little pain management, guys like him are perfect candidates for someone who'd enjoy learning low pace, low load liberty training to make him an extra fun pasture pal. Some autistics have an uncanny draw to horses and a horse becomes their connection to communication with another living soul. There are many families and scenarios that add up to a great home. "Useless horses" aren't useless. Their place in the world is simply waiting for them to be discovered by those who will love them.

What a beautiful comment Jimmy! You are so right! It would be wonderful for every pasture pet to have an autistic friend, and also wonderful for the autistic person to have them. It would be a perfect match. The idea of liberty work is a great idea too. For both parties, human and horse, it could be such an amazing healing thing. Our barn vet usually gives the worst-case-scenario, and several times he has predicted permanent lameness. However, he has been wrong at times and quite a few of the horses have recovered beautifully, even competed successfully afterwards. Hoping the same will be the case with Skeletor ❤

Skeletor is a champion. Suggest you regularly place your healing hands on the area, and ask the God of horses (perhaps Poseidon) to heal him. Thank heaven you’re there, loving and taking such great care of him. 🙏 ❤ thank you.

First off, I gotta say I’m very glad you didn’t start him under saddle before you found this out. Sheer chance! Secondly, the fact he’s missing part of a fibula is absolutely wild to me. I shared this with some friends mid-conversation and they actually did a spittake. Thirdly… I’m not in the habit of arguing with vets and saying they’re wrong. But vets do their best with the information and experience they have, and they’re fallible. You’re also in an area where the vet probably doesn’t see a whole lot of warmbloods, and as noted by many, their physiology and development can be pretty different from a regular cowpony. I think you have sufficient video evidence on hand to suggest that the cause the vet identified may not be correct. Not definitive, but suggestive. So I think it’s possible that you may need to wait until Skeletor is 6 or 7 before you actually figure out the cause, because it’s hard to rule out his fast growth as a variable until he simply stops growing.

You are so right! Vets do the best that they can with the info and tools available, but even with all the scans and other tests, they are still only able to guess a lot of the time, and that's still very helpful, as long as they are honest about their limitations. Anyone who would say all vets are fools or crooked is dead wrong, and extremely foolish themselves. Most of them are vets because of their deep love for animals. I have a friend who has been manipulated by the right wing fanatics at his church. It's some obscure American church that we thankfully haven't got much of here in Canada. Latter Day Saints or something like that. He now hates all doctors, and is sure they are all in a giant conspiracy. In the end of his theory it all leads to Armageddon. In his mind doctors and vets should be avoided like the plague. His poor cat endured several years of illness with no treatment to reduce the symptoms. She was about 15, but my insistence that she needed a vet fell on deaf ears. Good thing his kids are all grown up! Maybe he's been lucky enough to not be exposed to much illness, but I have. I've had 3 dogs and 8 cats, and I've been sick with MS and heart disease since I was 30. I've broken MANY bones in accidents. In his old age, my dad had many severe problems too. I've seen some very crooked and uncaring doctors, including more than 1 that was outright vicious! But I still thank the sun and sky, or whatever, for the existence of doctors overall! What on earth would dad and I have done without the emergency surgeries they performed on us both, many times?! My dad had a huge, very serious open laparotomy for a very bad hiatus hernia. He was so incredibly ill, and suffering SO BADLY! What is the conspiracy theorists answer to that? Change his diet? Add dandelions to a cocktail of grass and weeds? Find some rare buffalo crap to add to it? Or just ignore it and let him suffer? Pray for him? Exhort others to pray? Pray upside down? Doctors and vets do am amazing job! It's not an exact science and it's FAR from easy! But they do a good job under the circumstances. A good vet is worth a million bucks! So if you have a good one, take good care of them!

He's already made it through some adversity....maybe it was just the cold snap that we had here in Montana? I didn't spot any arthritis on his xrays but never know. my fingers are crossed for skeletor 🤞🤞 my friesian horse had a bad fall in the pasture when he was 3yo. his knee was damaged in the process and the vets didn't know if he would ever be a riding horse. one even told me to put him down because of it. today he's 12 yo and a fantastic partner and riding horse. all he needed was time and careful training. don't give up and be patient :)

I have two horses, TWH mare, and RMH gelding. Both have had 4 bouts of EPM. The gelding having been the worst(age-13yr at 1st time) recovery lasted 2 years! He lost SO much muscle and had extensive nerve damage but I PT with him 6 days a week. Slow at first, gradually after about 6 months we introduced ground poles! (Ground work only-not under saddle till a full year went buy) After a year we raised the bar to cross rails, then 4”, 6”. When he was finally tracking up and signs of “loose hips and wobbly feet” were gone, I saddled him up! He is rideable and competitive! We go on 8-10 mile trail rides for 2-3 hours. He can jump 4’ at liberty, 2’ under saddle. His vet was amazed at the level of recovery. Slow and steady can bring them back. How about a new nickname for Skeletor? Something positive like Victor, Champ, King, prince …..something with hope. Sending you both lots of prayers. God will use this for good, in Jesus name we ask for your blessings!🙏💖

Hes not done growing so i wouldnt count him out yet. Growing pains are just that and i dont think ive ever seen a horse not take a bad step during a soundness exam. If his growth plates are still open, whats another 6 months to a year of letting him mature.

He might just be still growing and changing. Don't give up, I have a mare who has growth spurts off and on until she was 6. She is a thoroughbred Cross. She was brought up slow with training and I know it was the right move as she is 19 and doing great!!!

I don't have a horse, I'd like one, but I don't think I have the funds to keep one. This is probably a stupid idea, but could you ask Skeletor to pull a cart? I have a friend who has horses, and she runs a non profit business and uses her horses for healing work, she doesn't force them the horses just seem to know what to do, it's amazing to watch. She's had wonderful results with the horses and disabled adults and children and people who have gone through trauma. Maybe that's another option, he seems really gentle so maybe something like that would be good for him too.
