Horton fan clutch rebuild on Kenworth T800

Rebuilding a Horton fan clutch that’s on a Cat C 12 engine that’s in a 2000 Kenworth T800.

When the Detroit Silver bullet first come out they had a Horton clutch that had a faulty seal in the clutch and Harper warranted it by giving you a new clutch. It was almost a weekly thing to change it. After awhile the silver bullet we had in the cabover KW we just ran it without the fan [wintertime] ran great till it started to get warm and then we had to put it back in. That clutch though was the least of the problems with that Detriot and there was no lose of love when it got totalled one night when a steel hauler sideswiped it on the QEW just outside of St. Catherine’s coming back from Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo.

Great job with only two exceptions, I know opinions are different from guy to guy and this is mine (just a opinion) - 1st rule: NEVER hit a bearing with a hammer. You have a really nice shop, plenty of tools, c'mon, worst case scenario a Harbor Freight H frame floor press, I'm not their fan, but some tools are very good for a decent price. 2nd rule: work clean..., always. Mostly with those fine O-rings. Other than that, great job! He really knows what's he doing. I really loved the way he was removing the little T30 head screws, I could see his years of experience in those moments!

I just got a rebuild kit for my horton fan clutch. Noticed on the new bolts it is red loctite. To prevent from breaking the screws heat the screws to break the loctite. They should back out nice and easy. No more broken screws to extract

If the hub ever went out again I would definitely go with Kit-Masters. We had a Series 60 Detroit with a Horton hub on it and it wouldn't last but about 6 months until it would have to be rebuilt. Put the Kit-Masters in and hadn't touched it for 5 or 6 years. It has just developed a slight gap when the air was off. The Kit-masters seemed to be much better quality and longer lasting.

@@FarmingFixingFabricating As far as I know, (the store sales person where I bought my rebuild kit from told me) Kit Master's owner is a ex Horton worker, I guess he retired from them... I'm about to rebuild the same clutch tomorrow....

Andy I don’t what to tell you what to do but have you ever thought about looking into what they call a impact driver? What it does is u put an hex socket on the end and hit the back of the tool and it helps brake free nuts or hex bolts or what ever u use it as. I have a snap on brand one and love it, you can get them in 1/2 in drive or 3/8 drive that part number is PIT120. They also have a kit with socket bits and what not all. I will say you can brake or bend the bits but they are replaceable. I would be happy to send u mine as a gift if you would like one. One last thing....you can google that part and see what I’m talking about. Keep up the good work..Love watching the videos when I get time.

Worked for a OTR National Truck Leasing company..... Worked on more of them than I care to remember...... Temp activated clutches were more reliable...Know how pissy D.O. T is about air leaks......

Did you take out the old bearing that you drove the new bearing in with - I believe it was an old bearing anyway

I drove out both old bearings and drive the first bearing in with the second bearing.
