Jim, out of all the how-to videos on youtube your three videos on drip irrigation was definitely the best! Thank you for taking your time on explaining each detail and showing the different methods in which the drip irrigation system can be used.

Just a thought, to save water you could run solid line along the shrubs, then use a T coupler to run a looped 1/4 drip tube around each plant. Then it wouldn't wouldn't matter if you had the main line above the slope. More parts and work, but saves water and $ in the long run.

I used that exact model of timer for my tiny lawn in Barstow, CA several years ago. It worked on the same set of batteries for years. I even left it in July 2017 and returned in October for a day to find it still in operation, even though nobody had lived in that house for that whole time frame. I think I put it in during the summer of 2015.

WOW! I'm not even done watching this n you've answering two huge questions I couldn't find addressed anywhere--I looked for two hours! Main one was that I could run the 1/2" line around and loop it right back into a "T" on the supply line. Just so many good pointers and clear to understand! Thank you SO much!

But now some of the holes are closed. So water comes a lot from the open holes. Any solution for fix this area? And anything I can do for prevent this problem in my new area?

Hi- love your videos. I'm doing an area 6x20'. I need to do drip on each single plant. I also have a row of plants that need water. Should I hook up a soaker off a drip line for the row of plants? All the other plants are scattered about with no consistent spacing. I was thinking that I could also add a plastic Y connector to have 2 main hoses to run my drip lines. Your help would be wonderful.

I am so glad to see that an irrigation system can be attached to a garden hose instead directly to the hose bib. I want to set up drip irrigation for my raised bed garden area that is several feet away from the house with the lawn in between. I can't have a permanent line going from the house to the garden because it will get run over by the lawnmower. It looks like I can attach a garden hose with a quick connect to my hose bib and run the garden hose to the garden and attach the drip irrigation system to the other end. When it is time to mow I can disconnect the garden hose from the hose bib and temporarily place it inside the garden.

Awesome video. Question if you can help answer. I cut the PVC pipe in my sprinkler box and I plan on using the now empty unused valve to run a drip line to another area in my yard. How many inches should I bury the pipe? Also, any recommendation on how to connect they pipe to the valve? I know pressure is obviously something to be aware of. I'm intimidated by the work but I want to do it.

What are your settings on "how long" and "how often" this system is watering? My irrigation is buried under mulch as I used it for my flower beds. I'm trying to figure out how much is a good amount of water in the 24 period. The flower bed is in full sun in NC.

For Green giant arborvitae (planted in fall this is their first warm season) should I be using that 18" hole spacing? Also, should I be looking in drip line or root ball? I guess for my 3' trees the football and drip line were similar. I planted them mounded a bit so don't want to water too far from rootball for fear the roots have grown in that space yet? I also want them to search for water on their own and grow into native soil. Your advice would be appreciated!

Hey Jim, I've been binging your videos as I prepare for my first drip irrigation installation in my back yard. Maybe you answered this already, I have a question. When installing drip line on a hill, will the pressure at the bottom of the hill be much greater than at the top of the hill? Can this be a problem, or is it usually too small a difference to matter much? If you regulate down to 25 psi, and then run line up a big hill, is it possible there won't be enough pressure at the top? Thanks! Keep up the helpful videos!

Man, these videos are great but I found them too late! If you see this, I’ve got some questions. What goes behind your decision making when deciding between 1/4 inch drip tubing and 1/2 inch? I’ve seen people use the 1/4 inch to circle around trees and shrubs or just do grid style with 1/2 inch. Never seen them loop shrubs with 1/2 inch like you did, very innovative! Also, I’m having trouble finding exact guidelines on how to know when your space is too big, and may need to tap into another hose bib. It seems like you’ve covered quite a bit of space with one source, for now.

Very helpful; thanks! I am on a hillside and have terraces. I also have a lot of plants/beds on the other side of my driveway. I would like to get a spigot on that side, plus on the two terraces that don't have one. Dumb question, but I don't know who to call to have that installed. Would that be a plumber? I know areas of the country can be very different, but what do you figure is reasonable to pay for additional spigots? In total, I'd at least like three, possibly four, more spigots.

I just watched your three videos and wished I had seen them before taking on a similar project. Thank you for the very detailed explanation of things. I will not be going back and fixing some of the things I didn't do correct. Question: Is there any loss in pressure the further the lines go from the timer or main hose? I have some droppers that don't seem to want to push much water out at times. Also, can I just connect the water pressure regulator on the faucet first and then attach the timer? Thanks!

No, I use the solid pipe to run close to the plants and then start the drip pipe. There is some space between those shrubs, but more are going in soon. That is the reason I didn't switch back and forth in the shrub section. Good question. Thanks for asking.

@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
I have always used the emitters in containers and the drip tape or drip tube in beds. I like to wet the whole area around the plant. I feel like if I water directly at the base of the plant that it would have no reason to root into the surrounding soil. I have dug up plants that are on the lawn irrigation and they are just like the day they were put in the ground.

while this is a good sort of 101 on drip irrigation, one important omission is that while it's true, drip is very flexible but ... water pressure is finite. You can't just run endless amounts of tubing off one source cause eventually you 'll run out of water pressure and all your 1 gallon/hour (or whatever) emitters will emit ... fractions of that. So you probably might want to add a postscript on zoning.
