Our Gardens and Landscaping are always evolving. Yes, it can be work, but it is very rewarding and a wonderful way to de-stress. With time, I have learned what my plants and shrubs want. You have a beautiful garden❗❗❗Thank you for the helpful tips!🙋♀️

I just advised a customer today about not "babying" plants too much. I've gone 180 with my personal garden, both indoor and outdoor - I used to baby things and help them limp along, now (after initially giving them a good start and weaning off the water), it's definitely sink or swim! Also yes, big box stores are starting to pull shrubs and perennials for clearance that are still in good shape. My back patio looks like a miniature nursery with all the things I've been buying (many on clearance) in anticipation of a big fall project.

Jim thanks for advising us on when to prune woody ornamental plants. That can get tricky but essentially keep in mind the plants need time to form next years buds and harden off for the winter. Fantastic VIDEO!

I also appreciate those things! Jim includes host plants for pollinators too, which helps complete the life cycle - after the reminder, I bought some extra parsley and dill just for butterflies. I didn't realize that about shrubs either.....now I'm not worrying so much.

I am guilty of Overwatering. I have replaced several times in the last 5 years, pittosporum tenufolium ( Silver Sheen,) my favorite screen shrub. I promise no matter how thirsty I am this summer when it gets to be 105, I will not over water. 🤞🏼👍🏼👍🏼

One of your tips for June was very helpful and I see it's a rule for July as well. It was about keeping weeds under control. You would be proud of me because I'm virtually weed free. Of course I weed as I'm planting but at the end of my gardening day I take a complete walk through with my hori hori knife. I also look for sons of bugs.

Yeah butterfly bush is really hardy & drought tolerant. I have 2 ancient ones in the back yard that the bees, butterflies & humming birds love. It gets huge. Like 8 to 10 feet. Makes a pretty big mess with old dead stalks needing to be pruned out every year. It likes really hard compacted clay soil, full sun & just a bit of water. Ivy will grow under it, but not much else.

Good day Jim. It's truly amazing what you've created in your garden space over the last year, or so. Being South African, it's heartwarming to see that you used plenty of agapanthus throughout your landscape! They are super plants, and with all the new repeat flowering varieties, you can't go wrong! Your vids are a wealth of information on new varieties of plants! Keep up the good work. 🐾💪🌺

I just spent the last week trying to take back control of my garden beds. This year the Chamberbitter weed is absolutely determined to take over! I don't recall ever battling this particular weed this much. Being careful not to "disturb" them too much as I rip them out due to them being prolific seeders, don't want to shake the seeds off while pulling them out! Thanks for the inspiration for the coming month! Hope to be able to stay on top of things 😄💚

I absolutely love mulching almost everything. I'm in a semi-arid area (14" of rain per year) and it really helps a ton when establishing plants and keeping down the water use. I can usually get it by the truckload from a local tree company for a delivery charge, which is way cheaper than any bagged or fancy mulches. It's mostly the really xeric plants (i.e woody salvias, some penstemons, etc) that don't appreciate the wood mulches, almost everything else loves it. Appreciate the tips! Lots of wisdom in balancing the foliage with the roots when it comes to water use.

I need to go back to your pruning vid since I was wondering if I should give my gardenia a trim or wait until after the Fall 2nd bloom. I've been growing Shasta daisies from seed here in Georgia (7b) for about 8 years. The second year they do beautifully in Spring, but then by Fall I lose most of them. I've tried cutting them back after blooming, by half and also by 2/3. Doesn't seem to matter. They never rebloom and typically wilt and die. But I do love them so I keep replacing them, ha.

I'm in N. Georgia, the Shastas kinda go away for me too. Hope to add maybe one nice cultivar to my bed & letting the Shasta play in my native area. It seems to move around a little but never self-seeds aggressively.

Hi Jim. Great video. I do tend to overwater. Some of it is because there is a lot of advice out there which promotes it. Like "newly planted shrubs need lots of water. Make sure to water them every day for the first week after you plant them." Do you agree with this? Do you water your newly planted small shrubs and perennials every day for a week or two after you plant them? Thanks.

Do you think your regular rainfall plays a factor in not needing much fertilizer? I was just thinking about how my plants perk up and grow in the spring or summer after a rain here in north Texas. Ours summers are hot and usually dry.
@JimPutnam3 жыл бұрын
There is no doubt that rain is better than irrigation water for plant growth. Excessive rain can unfortunately leach nutrients. So there is a balance.

I have the stupid NC devil grass/bermuda grass!😫😫😫if anyone has come across a product that helps maintain or keep it at bay (besides a total burn out-been there with new sod at another home) please share! Bioadvanced bermuda control seemed to have little to no benefit, round up is what we use in flower beds but it still has to lay there and die while waiting to be pulled. Pulling vefore spraying just makes it more vigorous. Evil stuff! We had a quarter acre at our last home and an acre now...no way we would do the same tear out and sod here without some serious sticker shock.
