Hi Jim, love your monthly check list videos. Please do a beginner’s guide to tool sharpening. As a novice gardener, I don’t even know where to begin, but I have several dull clippers and pruners I’d like to sharpen!

Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge of gardening with everyone. I can honestly say I am a better Gardner because of you. I just bought a ton of plants on clearance from Lowe’s within the last few days. I filled up three carts lol. I basically got $500 worth of plants for just under $100. It is reassuring to know I can still plant them!!

This winter could you consider an informative video on how to tell leaves and plants that are diseased vs bug damage vs not enough water... sometimes it is easy to tell, but basically it is a bit confusing to trouble shoot a problem. Thanks!

I usually have to bag some leaves as we have so many trees all around us. I do shred a ton and leave them around the front and back gardens. It really does help the soil plus it’s easier to find dog poo on shredded leaves, lol!

Sincerely Jim, great information! Thank you for sharing. Oh, I do have a question. You mentioned cleaning and sharpening tools for the winter. Example, shovels, you clean and sharpen. I've heard some people put linseed oil on them or something else. What is your recommendation? How do you care for your tools? Thanks

With my leaves I shred them, then put them down as mulch thick like 6-8inches+ so it lasts til spring then after I've put it down I soak them down so the wind doesnt blow them around and they stay in place

We find that some broadleaf evergreens need to be protected from dry winter winds, or sun exposure reflected by the snow to minimize winter burn - depending on where they are sited - here in Northern New England. This is particularly important for kalmia latifolia.

Hey, Jim. I love the info. Im from Washington, North Carolina (East neighbor of Greenville). I just discovered you today when I saw you in a Mr Maple video. I appreciate the fact that you give actual detailed, experienced information that most people don’t know until it’s too late. Anyways I just started running my own landscaping business and I go to Raleigh fairly often to visit the farmers market, flea market, Atlantic Gardening Company, etc… do you have a business or nursery that I can physically visit? Also, are there any specific nurseries you would recommend anywhere between Atlantic beach and Greensboro (I don’t fear driving) that have larger selections of Japanese maples or unique/rare plants? Mostly Japanese maples though. Thank you. Btw I subscribed to your channel before I even finished the first video. You’re answering ever question that pops into my head before I ask it.

In New England (Zone 6), we haven't had a hard freeze to "die back" the dahlias yet. I'm afraid I'm leaving them too long. Should I wait until they die back before digging them up? I would expect in the next week or so we should have a hard freeze. It's been an incredibly mild Fall this year. No complaints here!!

My backyard slopes down and the mulch and soil are constantly washing away during rainstorms. I have some limestone edging but stuff washes right over it. Any suggestions? I heard that ground cover can help. (Central Texas 8b)

I have a question about leaf mulch: we have an exorbitant amount of pine needles. Can I use that as a ground cover mulch for the winter or are they too acidic?
@vivivs27743 жыл бұрын
I'm not a pro gardener but we have very alkali (caliche) soil and have tried to amend it with pine needles but it really had no effect on the ph. It did become a breeding ground for cockroaches, however. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the video. Can you please clarify if ranunculus bulbs can be planted in fall for 7b? Some videos say so and some otherwise. I would love to hear from you as you are exactly in 7b as well. I planted half of my bulbs and thought of planting the rest in early spring only because I wasn't sure. Should I be protecting the ones that have sprouted already? Thank you.
