House sparrows (HOSP) are a non-native species brought to America in the mid 1800's. They are now a serious threat to native cavity nesters like bluebirds, chickadees and many others. Note: The video was recording by itself and I was not watching these events live.
Time stamps for video:
0:23 Parents tend chicks.
0:44 Male house sparrow pokes head into box but doesn't enter yet.
1:40 Parent chickadees continue to tend to chicks.
6:12 Final HOSP attack begins (viewer discretion advised)
17:15 First time HOSP enters box but doesn't notice chicks.
19:05 HOSP finds chicks huddled in bottom of nest and begins pecking them.
21:10 Last chick escapes box.
25:05 HOSP captured with Van Ert trap later.

Truth is, the actual impact of house sparrows on native birds in North America is practically negligible. They are not an environmental hazard like other invasive species. All common backyard species they compete with, such as bluebirds, chickadees, wrens, and other cavity nesters remain common and are increasing in population. These cavity nesters will frequently attack and kill each other too, such as the wren when it kills the bluebird’s nest Ultimately, the hatred for house sparrows stems from the common backyard birder watching his beloved native nest be displaced by a more common non-native bird than from any actual ecological impact these house sparrows cause

@@fahoodie1852 I honestly have no idea where you got your info. They have a detrimental impact on these habitats and though some native species (such as wrens) do take similar actions, it’s not nearly to the extent of the sparrows. Many of the native species can’t fight back if house sparrows take over the box as they haven’t evolved with them. My main problem with this comment is that it downplays the effects of HOSP and encourages inexperienced birders to let HOSP nest, furthering the horrible consequences of these horrible birds. I understand that some native birds do this, but you’re acting like the HOSP is native but in reality, the natives stand almost no chance. I normally even wouldn’t comment on this sort of this as I don’t want any arguments, but I truly don’t want to encourage acting like HOSP are good for the ecosystems they’ve been introduced to.

@@birdliker7172 I got my information from the IUCN and birdlife - the populations of basically all the cavity nesters they live alongside (bluebirds, nuthatches, black capped chickadee, wrens, and various species of swallow all reflect a significant increasing trend), which wouldn’t be the case of these “horrible” birds had a detrimental effect on them. House sparrows have been in the USA for 170 years yet I have not found any evidence that they are responsible for the decline of any native bird species. They are only a nuisance in backyards and urban habitats where they share habitat with native birds

A neighbor has chickadees living in a 2" x 3" hole in there siding. I saw what looked like a flicker attack where it was attacking the adult with a few outside. How much nest space do chickadees need? I ordered some boxes that were marketed as 5''x5'' but the space inside is slightly less than 4x4. To me it looks like one bird could barely turn around inside. Can they nest in such small space? I know they can lay up to 15 eggs...

Great way to protect chickadees as soon as they start a nest is to install 1- 1/8" hole reducer on front of box. HOSP cannot get in. Love end of this video the best.

Agreed. I had a 1 1/4 inch reducer on after they started and thought this would work but the HOSP was still able to get in. My chickadees won't begin a nest unless the starting hole is at least 1 1/2 inch. I put the 1 1/4 inch reducer on after 1st egg is laid and the parents are OK with it. I was worried they wouldn't accept a 1 1/8 inch hole. As I mentioned I did not witness this attack in real time and thought the chickadees would be safe. Thanks for your comment.

Your box should be fine for chickadees since they are smaller birds. A bigger inside is better for bluebirds though. As far as clutch size I have been hosting chickadees for over 10 years with only 1 nest more than 6 eggs (7). And I live in a southern state and have warmer weather. Plus my chickadees are getting a good food supply with sunflower seeds for the adults. The chicks are fed early with small green caterpillars and other small insects. They breed once per year early in March-April and average since clutch is probably 5-6 eggs in my area of northern South Carolina.

No way to know long term but they were not seriously hurt by this male HOSP. Once the fledglings are out the box the HOSP has no more interest in them. Hi, As you know house wrens are a native species so they can't be hurt or nests disturbed by law. However you CAN put your box up with a smaller hole to try and encourage chickadees. Also in your case the Hironbec Pendulum probably won't work as an option since the wrens are likely almost the same weight as your chickadees. WAIT: Did you mean House SPARROWS or HOUSE WRENS? It would seem unlikely that a house WREN would actually KILL a chickadee. If you are talking about a HOSP or House Sparrow then the Hironbec Pendulum IS a possible alternative to smaller hole.

I will trade if you agree to promoting the idea of light colored nest boxes to prevent heat kills on fledglings. This is NOT an unproven theory and I have significant data on my channel that proves that weather worn and other darker exterior colors can be deadly to fledglings because of heat.

Probably just chased them away to be honest. Birds take along time to kill other birds. In the realm of like 20-30 minutes. Usually a long fight, plucking of feathers, and tearing enough and tearing enough skin off that one bird will actually die. I think he just evicted them from the nest. Sparrows do that. Males build/find a nest and then attract a mate to it. He was probably being lazy and commandeering the box.

Correct. He's looking to clear them out for a nest of his own. They never do this to be "mean". That's a human ideology that is not present in birds. They do what they do with, in their minds, good reason.

True. Except for the fact that it's an invasive species vs a native species. And it disrupts the ecosystem. And since we brought them here, whether it was intentional or not, it's up to us to do what we can to correct the mistake.

House sparrows are just like every other living creature: they fight for survival out of instict... There is another species out there, supposedly gifted with "reason" and "self-control", but instead of using those, they go around destroying everything in their way... you know which specie I am talking about, right?

They still died in the wilderness since they weren't ready to fledge. Easy Pickens for preditors. It's not like the intruder bird was trying to kill and/or eat them. He was stealing their home, kicking them out.

They are loud and make your house looking like shit castle. Well you better get a slingshot, blowgun, BB gun or pellet gun. A .50 BMG would also do a great job, these suckers would look like popped corn, ready to get eaten (by predators). Swallows and tits are also great for wiping out insects, without the house sparrow there population would increase.

It doesn't matter if house sparrows are native or not. It doesn't matter if that's just the way nature works - survival of the fittest. If they are destructive to the birds I love, I will do something, because well, humans are part of nature, too.
