Aww .. sorry that you're under the weather or else you would be having a good time here in Malaysia. Just for your information, as to why the locals said not to go there as it's "expensive" is because we, local Malaysians get almost free medical care at our public hospitals. It's heavily subsidized by the government. For any locals going to our government clinics will cost you RM1 (@ USD0.25¢) and government hospitals RM5 (@ USD1.25¢) being registration fees. Other than that everything else is almost free. Of course there's a difference in waiting time between public and private hospitals. But once you're registered in all other procedure comes in a breeze. In fact, you will be called and told off if you don't come in for your coming appointments as your appointment time could have been placed with others in need of medical attention. So there .. just a brief explanation from a Malaysian here 🇲🇾

Agreed, usually people with medical insurance can afford that. In my case, I had to go to private since I'm suffering non stop from the symptoms plus GP I'm seeing was giving no conclusive answers. Finally admitted, diagnosed as BPV & continuously had outpatient treatment for another 3 to 4 months. Total cost around RM7k (slightly USD 1.8k/ GB 1.5k) just for first treatment

I had similar symptoms while traveling in Texas. I went to the emergency ward and saw a Doctor who checked my ears, said I had fluid behind my eardrum and prescribed over the counter decongestants. The whole visit took 3 minutes and cost $1750.00. I should have gone to Malaysia!

Being able to get specialist appointments so promptly and being looked after so well, is such a comfort when travelling, and no language issues either. You get what you pay for and to get this level of service comes at a cost, but still seemed very reasonable. You have had a few suggestions of what the problem could be, and your symptoms are very similar to hubby's from a few years ago. Maybe check for Benign Positional Vertigo. Take care and hope you are back to your normal self very soon. Happy New Year from NZ.

I am a Malaysian here. I have been to Sunway Medical Centre (their HQ in Petaling Jaya) a number of times and i would say their service is top notch compared to other hospital I've been in Malaysia. Agreed with the hospital feeling like a hotel rather than a hospital 😆. Which i think is a good thing. The RM900+- charged to you is quite reasonable although many Malaysian would considered it expensive due to our almost free government medical services. The less than couple hours you took to see the specialists i must agree is phenomenal! Hope you get better soon and enjoy your stay in Malaysia 🇲🇾.

So sorry to hear (no pun intended- honestly!) about your current health problems Neil. It sounds like labyrintitis or vertigo to me (I'm not an expert but the symptoms similar to what a friend of mine had). On the positive side, you are certainly in the best place to get very fast and affordable healthcare right now as our fantastic NHS is sadly on the verge of collapse in my opinion (don't get me started on this!), and you would not be getting the same service level of care if you were here in the UK right now. Sarah - I'm sure he will be fine - it's just the joys of life but you'll both get through this together. Wishing you both good health and luck in 2023. For your blood pressure, get a BP device and monitor your blood pressure daily and record the results. Share your BP measurement with your doctor during the next appointment. So sorry to hear about all your troubles. We’ve been away so I’m just starting to catch up with your videos. I’m sure someone else has mentioned this, but in case they haven’t, I have a friend who has some vertigo related issues and it was discovered that the fluid inside the ear that is used for balance (essentially your internal spirit level) was starting to crystallize. Sorry to hear about the health issues. I have no expertise in this area, but my immediate thought went to possible mold exposure. Not sure why you’d have symptoms and Sarah wouldn’t, but take it for what it’s worth. Also, $200 for all that service sounds like a dream. I suffer from severe tinnitus for a couple of years now, on and off pain in the right ear and a feeling of unrelenting pressure. Five years ago I was seeing an ENT consultant for the same ear. I have had private microsuction of the ear three times during the past couple of years. I recently went back to my GP here in the UK and have been referred back to the consultant. Due to a huge waiting list I am advised it will take in excess of 18 months. My wife is Chinese Malaysian living in the UK. I am now seriously considering a trip out to Kuala Lumpur later this year to visit this hospital and during the same period visit family on my wife's side.

Hi Neil. First, hope you are feeling better. Sharing health care experiences like this is very valuable to others who may find themselves needing health care while in foreign countries. It can ease anxiety and make other travelers feel more prepared. I have also found the health care in Malaysia to be affordable. However, what is most impressive is how effeciently things get done. All of those consultations would have probably taken weeks in the U.S. to get sorted. So, thanks for sharing this personal experience. Now, take this with a grain of salt because I'm not a doctor and you still need to be properly diagnosed. Something we have come across in the clinic from time to time were patients experiencing benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV. This is a result of calcium crystals ending up in the wrong place within the inner ear. These displaced crystals send confusing signals to the brain about your position and can cause vertigo and dizziness with certain head movements. We performed a maneuver called the Epley Maneuver with these patients which sometimes improved their symptoms. You could also have an ear infection, but I would think that would have been discovered by the ENT. Make sure you are staying well hydrated... and I don't mean with beer 🤣Keep us posted on how you are doing. Get well soon and safe travels. BTW... nice bag you got there 👍

Malaysia's health system is similar to the UK's NHS. Although there are a number of private hospitals around, the government makes sure that they don't charge exorbitantly so that many more can afford their services. This would give room for public hospitals to cater to the ones who can't afford private health services. Public hospitals also deals with cases that private health services would not take or is too costly to continue. That helps with their record as well if the patient(s) die(s). There is some financial help for some treatment too (not everything is free but costs are kept low accordingly). Malaysia's public hospitals have many room for improvements and receives many complains but at the end of the day, they are the ones who gives basic health needs to the people. In Sarawak, there used to be what is known as the "flying doctor" services who would fly to the interior to give basic health services to the people who live in remote areas. It has been stopped for the time being. There is also the "water" ambulance too (rare). Another one is the mobile clinic (a bus renovated to give basic health services to remote areas) which are accessible by basic roads.

That cost is very reasonable. Please check out the comments of others who have had a similar issue and got it resolved in a different manner. Seems like it has something to do with the sinuses and allergies. Hope you get well very soon. In the meantime, enjoy Malaysia’s fabulous food and friendly locals.😊

Medical services in the government hospital/ clinic is almost free for its citizen therefore the charges in private hospitals are a bit costly to the locals but not to citizens from neighbouring countries.

Malaysian here, sorry to hear about your health issue. As for me, I would usually go to several hospitals for consultation just to be sure, both government and private hospitals. If you find the cost is affordable, I hope you could also visit other medical centres for 2nd opinion. You can also Google what the other Malaysian said about the specialists from various hospital and see which one is the best, mine would be KPJ Damansara when I lived there and seek gynecology related consultation and treatment.

7:53 Only about two weeks ago I had an appointment with a cardiologist at another medical centre, not too far from this particular Sunway Medical Centre : the cardiologist's consultation plus the usual blood test (for cholesterol, kidney, liver and glucose) cost about half this amount. So I would say the charges are very reasonable.

Hope your issues are soon resolved. If you were in the UK you would still be waiting for a GP appointment to be followed many months later by at least 3 spread out hospital visits and possibly no further forward. Maybe when we’re unwell in UK we should be looking to book a flight to Malaysia for a consultation.

I have similar symptoms and it turns out the problem is my neck and I have cervical vertigo. I have been given neck exercise videos by the NHS which seems to assist. The price you paid in the hospital in KL is a lot less than I expected.

Neil, so sorry you’re experiencing this unpleasantness. Sounds similar to benign positional vertigo symptoms which I have had and which can be mild or quite severe. Also can last awhile or subside quickly. Maybe do some research on this and see if it might fit? Glad you’re getting your BP meds right, also. Also, not a popular subject, but my DH and I lost 50 pounds each during the pandemic by going on the carnivore diet. I’ve been able to get off all meds (BP and auto immune) and hubby got off one of his BP meds. We’re 65 & 64 and are feeling better than we have in 30 yrs. Found out about it after a fatty liver diagnosis due to too many carbs. Blood tests are now normal! God bless and take good care. (Med costs there seemed great to us.)

Sorry to hear of your health issue. We are like the motor vehicle, after so many Kilometres or Years,a few bits and pieces need attention. I live in Sydney Australia and to be able to organise all these appointments,it would probably take three months or there about. Even though I have private cover,it would still cost me in the hundreds of Dollars. Your and others KZbin videos highlight the fact of how we are being ripped off in our countries plus the inconvenient long waits to see those specialists.

I feel so sorry reading thru the comments. If the west only knew how bad their healthcare systems are. In malaysia if you went to a goverment clinic, it would only cost you RM1 for each service. If you went to a goverment hospital, it would only cost you 1/4th of what you pay at privates. I really hope the world community prioritises cheap and accessible healthcare for everyone. I’m poor and I can’t imagine travelling abroad and losing my life savings over health which is a basic right for every human..

No doubt cheap and accessible but the waiting time to get attention is ridiculously long. Sometimes a whole day to see the doctors and get done. I guess you get what you pay for.

Incredible price for such a lot of work . Thank you for uploading , it is appreciated as I am a 60 year old Englishman with no health insurance on my third month in Malaysia. Fair play to you though , you don’t let pre existing health issues stop you from seeing the world . The full health screen in Penang sounds interesting , I’m not sure I’d want to know . I hope you do feel better though , not easy for you . Getting older is a pain .

Wow! I'm sorry you're not feeling well but thank goodness this didn't happen in a country like the US. It could have cost tens of thousands of dollars and you would have had to wait several weeks or longer for specialists. Has anyone recommended an MRI? Sending healing, positive vibes. Wishing you and Sara, health, happiness, laughter and LOVE in 2023.

Look into “vestibular rehabilitation.” It’s often difficult to get an exact diagnosis for dizziness. You can start treating the symptoms even if you don’t know the exact cause. Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physiotherapy that reduces or eliminates the dizziness and nausea. There should be this type of treatment in Malaysia

Sorry to hear about your health issue Neil. I have sinus since young and my dizziness started in 1999. The first time was vertigo and the rest of the episodes were imbalance the whole day (no vertigo), making me nauseous if I turned my head around quickly. Not sure if your dizziness is of the same type. I went to the ENT in Singapore and New York City. In both countries, they did many checks (same tests) but could not find out why I was dizzy and told me its a viral infection. The doctors did not give me any medicine and told me that my body will compensate and adjust to the dizziness. In my case, I believe its to do with my sinus. Like you, they told me that my Eustachian tubes are clear when I can feel liquid in my ears. My dizziness was triggered mainly by my right ear, so to reduce my dizziness, I decided not to sleep on my right side and it has helped a lot. Once, I forgot and slept on my right and it came right back! What I discover is whenever I stay in temperate countries longer (more than 4 months), my sinus gets better and the dizziness goes away. Im also currently using Dymista spray, which has steroid and anti histamine in it. Its much better than the previous ones with steroid but no anti histamine. As for the dizziness, just like what the doctor said, I guess the body compensates for it. In the beginning, I still get dizzy spell once every month! OMG! Eventually it got better when I travelled to a temperate country with good air (England towns actually! haha) for about 4 months per year for a few years. My sinus was better and the dizziness disappeared after. Humidity is soooo bad for sinus. Many Singaporeans have bad sinuses. Hope you recover soon! Happy New Year to you and Sarah! :)
