Have you ever needed to seek medical attention while traveling? What was the experience like for you?

Glad you recovered and got home to be with family. Very lonely to be seriously ill and far from home.

Had 2 broken bones during my long trip. A broken jaw in New Zealand. A car hit the back of my bike and sent me flying onto the road while.iwas riding home from work. Luckily my helmet kept the rest of my head safe. The funny thing is: I was sent home from the hospital because they didn't see the crack in the jaw. Although there was a 2 mm gap between my lower front teeth. All of it was paid was by some kind of public health cover. I still had my own coverage. The other broken bone was an upper arm bear the shoulder joint in Mexico. My insurance paid for it. Of course a health insurance costs you some money. For me it was around 33 Euros a month and after the first year it was doubled I think. I my opinion it is a good thing to have.

New Zealand has amazing health coverage! As a rider from the US, I broke my clavicle in a race there and not only did they cover the cost of the hospital visit but also the PT afterward as well as giving me compensation for the damage to my bike and my clothing, all without having to ask for it! They had me sign some papers and voila, check in hand a week or so later. That was over 20 years ago so I can imagine things have changed a lot since then but all in all, it was a memorable experience!

Oh wow. Glad you came through okay. I had an episode of the food poisoning in Mexico, many yers ago. Ultimately it got me to slow down and stay in Veracruz, initially for four days, but then return and stay over two months. Those four days were spent in a hotel, eating dry cookies and drinking Coke, before moving on to oranges and other easily digested stuff. I never saw a doctor, but knew that I needed to do whatever possible to stay hydrated. It was awful, but it passed. Glad you recovered.

Good to here you survived - my sister and my brother in law, Jack, are cycling in South East Asia. Jack says that the hospitals in South Asia are excellent. I have never been there as I typically travel alone a supported cycle tour may be something I should check out some time just to get my feet wet.

Oh wonderful! I hope they have a great time :) travelling on a supported tour is certainly different than solo touring but they both have some great perks 😄 wishing you a great next adventure, whichever you choose!

Good to see you survived. I ended up in hospital in New York while on holiday. I was using Australian travel insurance. Was a bit scary but all worked out in the end. We are riding from Berlin to Lake Garda in May.

Glad you did well with the experience. It is scary being ill in a foreign country. I endured two days of maybe food poisoning in the Truk Islands while traveling there in the mid-70s. I struggled through it ok, but one of our traveling companions was so dehydrated that she was hospitalized to receive intravenous fluids. We were visiting a small remote village and the local villagers were wonderful and supportive.

Glad you’re better! I would love to hear about your thoughts on travel groups and self guided tours. Pros vs cons. I really want to start touring and I feel like tours could eliminate my biggest mental block (planning the route and where to stay).

That's a great question! I actually interviewed someone about supported tours a while ago that you may find helpful :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3PYk4apfM92etU There are some things I would add to it now that I have more experience in both areas of touring but it gives you an idea :) A supported tour can be a great way to build experience while reducing some of those blocks you mentioned. But it does of course come with a higher price tag than unsupported touring, and you are somewhat restricted to the timing, route and locations that the tour selects. I don't have any personal experience with self-guided tours but I know a rider who loves them for the reasons you mentioned. Whichever you choose, I think you have a great approach. Being aware of the things that are acting as mental blocks can help us ease into this type of adventuring in the way that feels right :) It's a great question - I hope this helps a little!

Tour support is such an adventure but hard work to! I spent 5 months this summer as an assistant ride leader with Bike the US for MS. ACL Northern Tier, Pacific Coast and Southern Tier routes. Glad you got through these health challenges and looking forward to your next adventures :-)

Thanks for posting. I would like to know the name of your travel insurance you purchased as I am planning on spending time next winter in thailand. Plan to cycle in chiang mai to get in better shape then cycle from the north to the south of thailand. I have cycled in Vietnam, Sir Lanka and Thailand before all un-supported. If you can give me some details of your insurance.

I’m headed to a foreign country this summer and I had a question on insurance. Is the reason you use travel insurance because your canadian insurance doesn’t cover foreign locations?
