An unbelievable amount of weight! The average person has no conception of just how much 580+ pounds is. I was a power lifter in the middle weights and thought I was doing well.dead lifting 590 pounds. This man is putting it over his head! Wow!

Those Americans still wont let go the Imperial System even though clearly the Olympics is in the metric system.

I’m in the U.K and turned 75 a fortnight ago. I have several degrees and prof quals but I carry the rough conversions to imperial (not a title to be proud of I’m well aware) for weight, length liquids and tyre pressures. I’ve never bought anything from a deli counter as grams indicate nothing to me. Athletics was my sport to watch and compete in and a minute per lap will always be my mental measure rod. Us dinosaurs will be gone soon. You metric folk were always right and I don’t claim otherwise. The contemporary tv commentators speak of our hero’s’ races in imperial and we trained with those in our minds when comparing our own more meagre efforts. We still get excited, we hurt no-one and provide amusement for younger folk by our creaky, weights and measures. Have the decency to mock us gently. I’ve had repeated medical treatments that damn near killed me with embarrassment when they started but the result has been total immunity from self conciousness from those days forth. 😢

Just so my comment will be perceived the right way, I want to state that I am a naturalized American Citizen, born and raised on the other side of the Atlantic, from a country using the metric system. For a while there I had the same attitude towards the Americans “doing everything differently just to be different”. However, I have come to appreciate the fact that they are sticking to their roots. After all, while my home country (fatherland) uses the metric system, this wasn’t always the case. There were other systems in place before we converted to metric. And this is probably true for other countries as well. So, while the rest of the world has succumbed to globalization and losing face, the United States has been able to hold its own. Therefore, I can’t help but attribute people’s mockery of the US and the so-called Imperial System as a sign of jealousy. The United States has managed to stay strong and give the middle finger to globalism, while others have not been able to. It’s plain and simple. Now, as far as preferences go, sure, I like most things metric - grams, millimeters, 24-hour clock (vs am/pm), but I have come to appreciate the American system for the most part. Certain things just sound lame in metric, such as Celsius (instead of Fahrenheit), kilometers (instead of miles for measuring long distances), kilowatts and Newton/meters (instead of horsepower and pound/feet). All this is to say that there’s no right or wrong system; it’s all about personal preference…
