This encounter between a hot air balloon and a high-voltage wire goes about the way you'd expect.
"On 7 January 2012, a scenic hot air balloon flight from Carterton, New Zealand, collided with a high-voltage power line while attempting to land, causing it to catch fire, disintegrate and crash just north of the town, killing all eleven people on board.
An inquiry into the accident by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) concluded that the balloon pilot had made an error of judgement when contact with the power lines became imminent, trying to outclimb the power lines rather than using the rapid descent system to drop the balloon quickly to the ground below. Toxicology analysis of the balloon pilot, Lance Hopping, after the accident tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), suggesting he may have been under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash, which ultimately led to the error in judgement. The crash was the sixth transport accident in ten years the TAIC had investigated which involved key people testing positive for drugs or alcohol, and the commission has called for the government to enact stricter measures in regards to drug and alcohol use in the aviation, marine and rail industries.
The crash is the deadliest ballooning disaster ever to occur in New Zealand. It was also the deadliest air disaster to occur in mainland New Zealand since the 1963 crash of New Zealand National Airways Corporation Flight 441, and the deadliest crash involving a New Zealand aircraft since 1979 crash of Air New Zealand Flight 901 into Mount Erebus."

New Zealander here, I remember this very well. It was widely talked about in the media, being the worst air disaster we've had since the Erebus crash in 1979 (that would make a "good" Last Moments piece as well). Many of the smaller rural towns of NZ depend on tourism activities, and following the accident report there was a real sense of grief and sadness that we'd been doing something like this in an unsafe manner for so long.

I know I'll cop it for being a Karen, but I'm a bit baffled by that statement. I don't work in tourism so I have no idea what the industry's like on the inside, but actually, a stupid government body making a stupid rule because they don't understand what a given industry is like on the inside isn't a foreign concept. I used to balloon often and it was spectacular, but I was only comfortable flying with my father-in-law, a cautious and competent pilot. He had no problem canceling a flight if conditions were less than perfect. I met too many pilots who were not so cautious, especially those who flew commercially and didn’t want to disappoint paying customers. I never, ever complained if Dad said we weren’t flying, even if we had gotten up at 5am to hit the launch field. We’d just leave and grab a great breakfast somewhere.

@@adamlewellen5081 Trust me, I had the same question. This will be my layperson explanation. Piloting is as much art as science. First is knowing exactly how long it takes for your specific balloon to respond to adding heat (via burning) or releasing heat (via venting-pulling a rope to open a flap at the top of the envelope.) Next is knowing wind patterns for the area you’re in. Changing altitude changes your flight direction as you get into different drafts. In some places, like Albuquerque, NM, there are “box winds” where you can land in the same place you launched from.

My dad has this storie from when he worked on a crop dusting crew. He was the flag man as well as responsible for refueling and various other tasks. One day they fueled up the plane and got started. My dad was running his quad up and down the road scoping things out for the pilot when the engine started to miss in the plane. It was heading away from the road they landed on and as soon as it missed the pilot swung the plane around as quickly as possible. As he did the engine cut out. So the plane lost most of its speed due to the sharp turn, and the engine was no longer pulling it along. On top of that there was a highline wire running between the road and feild the plane was over. Immediately he started trying to re-start the engine only getting a second of power out of it but just enough. As soon as it fire he pulled back to brought the plane into a steep climb losing most of his speed but gaining another 20 feet of altitude he just cleared the top wire with his tail wheel. Turns out someone had sabotaged the fuel tank with about 50 gallons of water. They spent the rest of the day sorting the water out of the kerosene with five gallon buckets.

Hot air balloons are quite scary. I'm 7'2, and when I was in Hokkaido, I was on a hot air balloon, and the fire literally burned my hair. There was a big panic on the air balloon, but we were like 300 ft off the ground, so I had to wait to fully extinguish the fire until we safely landed. That's why I'm partially bald on my head. I experienced a similar thing when flying a hot air balloon in S.Africa in 1977. There was a competition happening for the few balloons in the country at that time, about 12 in number. I was asked to take a photographer from a local daily Johannesburg newspaper after the competition task had ended so he could get some aerial shots. The flight lasted only about 20 minutes and he had his shots, so I set up for a landing in a small field ahead and established an approach to that field intending to land close to the upwind end of the field to be sure not to overshoot. As we neared the field, I noticed amongst trees a set of power lines on poles about 6 metres high but the stable approach would take us over those. However as we came close to the lines, the following wind taking us to our landing at only about walking speed, died completely and our forward trajectory reduced by at least 50% or more, whist we were of course still in the descent. Thus the angle of approach now changed to a steeper approach, and it was soon apparent that the power lines became a problem! I hit the gas burner to try to lift the balloon, but the inherent delay meant that we would hit the lines. Luckily the balloon basket floor (of non-conductive wood) actually settled gently onto the uppermost line of three, and forced all the three lines together. I was still inputting heat into the balloon envelope to try to climb away but before that could be accomplished there was a loud crack, and a spherical ball of brilliant blue flame sped along the line to the nearest post. This separated the line from the connector and destroyed the electrical circuit, removing any danger. We landed safely just a few minutes later with no damage to balloon or occupants. It could have been very different however. Shortly afterwards a van arrived from the local electricity utility and the guy told me I had disconnected scores of homes in that area and that I would be getting the account for repairs. He took my details, but I never saw any account! I still have the front page of the newspaper relating my 15 minutes of fame! I wonder of this terrible accident in NZ could have had similar cause?
@GilmerJohn
@GilmerJohn 2 жыл бұрын
I find myself wondering how quickly the balloon would fall is you "dump" the hot air (isn't there a cord that the pilot can pull to do this?)
@stewartw.9151
@stewartw.9151 2 жыл бұрын
@@GilmerJohn There is a way to dump the hot air out of the balloon. By pulling the rip-cord as it is called, a section of the balloon envelope can be opened, This allows the heat supporting the craft to dissipate quite quickly and a descent will follow. However like everything on balloons, it does not happen instantly! Once the descent does begin however, the next problem you have is that you build momentum in the descent and need to worry about hitting the ground too hard! So you control this with judicious use of the burner to add back heat.

My sister and I took up our Mother in a hot air balloon in July, 2000 for her 80th birthday. She loved it, hooting and hollering along the trip. It was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had. Just floating along on the golden summer morning rays, cows mooing and horses neighing below. Our pilot was so good, he took us down to the tree tops close enough to grab leaves, then back up and on our way. He called it "severe clear" because you could see Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC from upper Montgomery County, Maryland. Plus there was another balloon in tandem with us some distance away. The ascent was naturally smooth and away you go. The landing, however, is something for which you must brace yourself as there are no retro rockets and you are dragged for some distance. At any farm he landed on, he would leave a bottle of champagne on the home`s doorstep. Our gondola was only big enough for 4 people; I had no idea they could be made to take 11! I wonder that if it was a smaller type if the balloon would have cleared the power lines.

One can only TRY to imagine the mounting panic & horror of the passengers themselves - once they realised they were faced with burning to death or jumping to their deaths (a similar ordeal to some of the tragic 9/11 Twin Towers victims). NEITHER can one adequately comprehend the appalling, life changing prospect of being a relative or companion on the ground, watching this horrific spectacle unfold, just as they were anticipating greeting their loved ones… Instead, they could only look on helplessly as their Family members or close Friends met with the grisly, inescapable fate described above. That would surely haunt them for the rest of their Days… & - as the video itself points out - even the poor Officers who had to recover the bodies were mentally scarred by the ordeal, without the added agony & pathos of them being relatives or Friends… Life can be terribly cruel, as it certainly was on this most dreadful occasion. All the more reason, then, to appreciate & make the most of our own life while we have it - & to CHERISH those whom we know & love, since we never know when or how we shall inevitably be parted from one another….. 🤝

A year later we married and went on to college then medical school, we both became doctors raised 6 children and now recently retired. The three that died that saturday morning were my wife's parents mother and father and her younger and only brother, only god knows why he spared us and not them, neither my wife or i have ever flown in any plane since and never will.

Yeah, I see a lotta naysayers swearing up-and-down that it has no effect on anything mind-related, just a wee bit of fun you can have with the wacky tabaccy, as it were. I'm not out to demonize the leaf, but people have to keep it in perspective, marijuana isn't just a toy. It's fine for a little bit of recreation now and again, but chronic use CAN alter your brain chemistry over time. The extent of the effects on cognitive function over time is not fully understood, but we can definitely say that it can have an impact, or else it wouldn't really be a great drug because if it can't affect your brain at all, nothing will happen when ya take it. Source: Me, and my doctors literally telling me that it changed mine I just wish people today would be fully informed about what they're putting into themselves instead of just hearing from some stoner-friend they know "naaaaaaaaaah, dude, it's TOTALLY safe. Nothing bad EVER happened because weed-" People buy that crap. It's mind-boggling how gullible people are. They'll sit and deride "anti-drug, pro-DARE puritans" or whatever they call them, then sit and lap up medical advice from a burnout smoking pot on a couch who's never worked a day in the medical field in their life without question. One extreme is no better than the other.

But landing? landing is a bitch and a half. finding a slot for the run way, lining up correctly, watching your throttle, airspeed, altitude, pitch, cross winds, and god forbid your landing gear isnt down.
