Yes it is a mod , but if your going to use really big batteries (not the Spektrum ones) like the HRB 3600 (bigger in dimension that the Spektrum ones) then your either going have to wait between flights or do something to get more cooling in the battery bay. I just did this solely to give me added cooling just because I fly in such hot weather.
As far as the Spectrum batteries go, (besides being awesome) they are more compact and allow for cooling around to the esc. BUT not everyone can afford them!!
DISCLAIMER !!! I WANT TO GO ON RECORD THAT I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS HEATING ISSUE IS A DESIGN FLAW! What I am saying is fly responsibly and treat you planes right! Give them time between flights. Remember if its so hot that your uncomfortable then so is the electronics in your plane!!
Thanks for being my only sponsor!
You do that by hitting that thumbs up button and subscribing to my channel!
God bless!!

Hi Greg GREAT IDEA as they say NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION...... failing that if you do only have one plane the might I suggest WRAP A NICE PIECE OF SMOKED BACON AROUND THE ESC FLY 3.OR 4 CONSECUTIVE FLIGHTS THEN REST WHILST YOU HAVE A NICE BACON ROLL AND THAT HOLE YOU CUT GREAT FOR LETTING THE FAT DRIP OUT....... NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL AN EVOLUTION hahahahahha Top man Greg best to you both Brian

The problem with cutting into the bottom is that you can't use it with floats after. The electronics aren't water proof, its why they changed the access hatch to the top.

True but I never plan on using the floats.

What I did was to expand the opening in the cowl just under the prop and moved the motor wires out of the air flow...next its out to the field to see if this helps...I do like the louvered vent idea. THANKS

I liked your idea. I looked for something I could use, and found that an old air vent from a Jeep works really well. Just took some creative trimming, cutting and sanding

@@FatGuyFliesRC I found a simple fix. Run a zip tie through the front of the battery tray and pull the ESC up and forward. It puts the ESC directly behind the scoop and it can get air over and under it

I had the same problem, I cut the spinner back so it doesn't go around the prop root. Also used a Dremel to open up the scoop. It did hit just over 200f when hovering for a few minutes. Fyi if interested.

Well did you see the "FIX" video HH did? Now it seems the my suspicions were right about it getting too hot in the battery bay. Still an amazing plane, well worth the fix! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp28daJ9l56nac0

@@FatGuyFliesRC yes I saw the fix, but running a 4000 4s was made difficult to hook up. I should have explained more, when flying hot, I received no warnings, and the only time it went over 200 was in a nose up hover, at that it only went to 201. I am pondering the louvre thing. Thanks for your video.

Hi Greg that's a great idea but then I got to thinking I'm gonna want to fly my tt evolution on floats which will be 90% of my summer flying and 100% of my winter flying here in Canada. So water and snow will be sucked in so my best bet is to bring my valiant with me which will be on floats also! But and excellent solution for other pilots 👌 Marty from Canada 🇨🇦 🛩 🛩

Personally I think that your idea is a good one. Looks good and clean. Make two or three back to back flights. I am assuming that you have telemetry to tell you your ESC temp, if not use an IR thermometer to find out. A piece or two of tape over the vent when using floats will solve that issue. Good job.

Thanks, I think people are just watching the video and not reading the text at the end or in the describtion. This was just to add EXTRA cooling for flying a lot in hot climates. I do not believe that Eflite has a design flaw.

If you look up the Turbo Evolution on Horizon's site, there is an "Important Bulletin" addressing the overheated ESC issue: "When flying on hot days (85+˚F/29+˚C), especially when flying aggressively with 4-cell batteries, the ESC can enter Thermal Protection mode (which reduces the maximum power to 60%)". They then show you how to move the ESC from the bottom of the plane to the top, where the battery tray is, for better cooling. Fat Guy had the right idea though...it does need better cooling!!

Their fix don't work. Modded and flew it and it still got way too hot. Then I did Jon's mod( Jon without the H) and that helped more. Ut the esc still over heated. Poor air intake design

Hey Kevin Just did my first maiden last weekend and had the same issue. It got so hot after 3 minutes of flying my High Temp Warning was 210 degrees so hot that the glue melted where the battery sits in the plastic tray. I reglued the tray. This weekend after cutting a small hole I still got a High Temp of 180 again after 3 minutes of flying. By the way the air temp was 65. Anyways I had no idea that a Bulletin was out for the ESC mod I really appreciate the info. I'll definitely do this mod

Interesting but you just destroyed the integrity when if and when using the planes floats. Now you have a great, “water port” to drown the bird and electronics. That’s why eflite changed the battery access from bottom to top. Stick with the original design, alternate flights, and use the recommended battery configuration. I think your solution is just adding lumber to the fire for ruining a greatly reconfigured bird.

I understand what you're trying to accomplish and it seems logical but how do you know this mod won't make things worse or not make any significant difference? Do you have before temps and ambient conditions documented?
@FatGuyFliesRC
@FatGuyFliesRC 3 жыл бұрын
No I wish I had. This was a mod just to add EXTRA cooling for hot climate flying. No I wish had documented the initial overheating. All I can do is now go by feel. The inside of the battery area always felt real warm to me after a flight but not uncomfortably warm were I was worried about the electronics. So now with the same type flying I will see if it feels any warmer or cooler.

Has anyone flown this on a 4s 5000mah battery
@FatGuyFliesRC

I have not but that would be too heavy. The 4000 pushes it on weight. The best is the 3200 4s.
@tylersrcflightschool9570
@tylersrcflightschool9570 2 жыл бұрын
So my question is why would horizon give you the option to use if the weight is to much. I'm just going off their website I'm not arguing just confused this is off their page (1) 3S 11.1V or 4S 14.8V 2200-5000mAh LiPo with EC3™ or IC3® Connector

@@tylersrcflightschool9570 This is just estimation based upon how i fly . I have had all the timbers with the exception of the Night Timber X. Yes they say you can fly the 4s5000 and you can you would get killer flight time. However it will fly heavy and you may need to stay on the elevator a little more. It cannot hurt but just be carefull.

4S 5200 mah Zeee packs are all I fly with this aircraft (they just barely fit). I prefer the longer flight times. I added just a little bit of weight to the tail because these batteries are big and heavy. There are lots of great ideas in this thread but all I did was move the ESC forward and removed the decorative exhaust pipes... I've never seen above 180 F after 50+ flights. This is usually with hard flying for around 10-15 minutes. Gentle flying can get you nearly 20 mins with these larger packs. I would say the only negatives for using these big packs are crashes can be worse with the extra weight and you lose the unlimited vertical (although it still climbs very well). Not sure if it'll hover with the weight, haven't tried.
