Yeah, but vis a vis heating up fruit, Justin is right. If you can't count cobblers and other prepared dishes with fruit in them, then you can't count any prepared dishes, like pizza. Nobody's microwaving raw carrots or unseasoned turkey legs, either.

@@chinadollsyndrome But that's Travis' whole point their not talking about cooking a raw food. The whole bit about "Don't eat that grape yet, it's raw." is to point out the fact that grapes and fruits are essentially already prepared straight out of the fridge. So we are inherently not cooking them, because they don't need to be cooked, in much the same way that reheating leftovers isn't cooking them. It is legitimately just heating the grapes, just getting grapes hot, no cooking, no oven, no stove, just microwaving. So why don't we hear them up? The question still stands.
@calebhughes975

To simplify, the goal is not to cook, ie, no one is aiming to make a chemical reaction happen like when something is properly cooked. The only goal is to raise the temperature.

I don't think Justin misunderstood anything - I agree with him. He should have asked them: what other raw foodstuffs do you put directly into your microwave, heat up, and eat? I'm not sayin that "why do we almost only eat fruit raw?" isn't an interesting question as well, but being confounded why we don't put fruits in the microwave is very strange. I mean, even the ungodly people who put hot dogs straight in the microwave and eat them - hot dogs aren't raw, they are a prepared food. I might be missing something obvious here, but which non-liquid completely untreated foods do people just heat in the microwave and eat?

I actually have a food allergy where I've only been able to eat fruits and vegetables if they're cooked/processed in a way since I was 12 so like I actually know all about hot fruits and veggies. The answer is they taste gross warm. Fruit dont "warm" well, because of all the juice inside them. Strawberries are probably one of the only good ones you can just put in a pot and simmer it till its warm and put it on a pastry with the juices that have boiled out and it'll taste great. Peaches are ok but like canned peaches so kinda nasty. Bananas become trash tier if by itself and not like chocolate added to it. I have so many feelings on this. When I say “cook”, I’m talking about a chemical reaction that actually changes the food. When I cook a pizza, it chemically changes, the dough rises. Now say I have leftover pizza that’s cold. When I microwave it I’m not “cooking” it, it’s not undergoing a chemical change. I’m changing its temperature. So the question isn’t “why don’t we cook fruit”, because we clearly do. It’s “why don’t I prefer fruit to be at a different temperature”. Just like I prefer to warm my leftover pizza versus eating it cold. I put a strawberry in the microwave, I don’t want to “cook” it, chemically change it, I want to eat it hot! Why is cold fruit the societal norm??????????
@samseymour7004

Because they stay fresher longer in the fridge and most people just pull it out the fridge to eat. Also, fruits are juicy and we drink juice cold so we probably prefer it that way.

The chemical reaction you're referring to is the maillard reaction, pizza dough Rising because of heat isn't a chemical reaction that happens because of cooking, more a physical reaction, water heats and expands, the baking powder or Yeast just makes it so the water expands properly, but pretty much all of that happens before The maillard reaction which is is when amino acids react with sugars and it makes the delicious Brown part of food. I think Justin was asking about things like soup and oatmeal where the maillard reaction never takes place to begin with compared to things like a steak or cobbler. Were you have the maillard reaction happen and then reheat it later and now it's both considered cooking despite the fact if you cooked a pizza in boiling water like soup you wouldn't be able to cook it because the maillard reaction needs to happen for , say, a pizza to cook.

Raw fruit tastes fresh. We don't heat fresh stuff cuz then it doesn't taste fresh anymore. When fruit's in something, it's usually just in there to taste sweet, so it's okay to heat it. Or maybe I'm a complete moron that lives in weird-fruit-rule-land.

Here’s where I draw my line: cooking requires a chemical change in the ingredients. When you make cobbler, you’re breaking down starches into sugars and shit, the intent of microwaving fruit here is not to induce any chemical reaction, but instead to merely change the temperature of the fruit

@@Jukajobs I love the McElroys to death, but this and other bits have made me entirely certain that they are completely culinarily illiterate. Their whole take on food, and the examples they used, suggest that they barely do anything beyond heating packaged foods. Justin refers to oatmeal as something that inherently comes in a packet and cooks in the microwave, and none of them know the difference between heating something and cooking something, or realize why a _heavily_ prepared, multi ingredient foodstuff like pizza is in no way comparable to a singular grape.

I feel like griffin is forgetting that pizza and spaghetti have “fancy” preparations that you do before you can microwave them. All of the non-fruit foods they mentioned require preparation. A better comparison would be microwaving raw veggies or microwaving pasta without water and then eating that pasta without any sauce or cheese or anything else. Like most foods are more than single raw ingredient+heat source. Anyways you’re welcome for over analyzing a problem that came up on a comedy podcast as if they were trying to answer it super seriously.

-"Heating it up": When you do nothing transformative to the food besides make it hot (the transition and attendant chemical processes that occur when raw meat becomes cooked meat and the like count as transformative), including if the food was previously cooked (i.e. leftovers). -"Preparing it": When you mix or add ingredients, but the vast majority of the actual work to make it what it is was done previously (ex. instant oatmeal or leftovers of something fancy that needs to be integrated due to sauces or dressings). -"Cooking it": When you actually take the base ingredients (possibly a few things that have been previously processed to some degree), and actively do a whole bunch of stuff to them to create a dish. Requires heat to be introduced at some point. -"Making it": Cooking, but heat is never a part of the process (ex. sushi and most sandwiches). Can also be used for heated variations of typically non-heated dishes (ex. hot sandwiches). -"Baking it": Chemistry you can eat without dying (assuming you do it right).
