VINCE GOES FISHING

5 ай бұрын

Yesterday I had the pleasure of fishing with a new buddy named Charlie Cote. Charlie guided as we walked from his house in San Luis Obispo to his local sandy beach. Charlie casted bucktails, curly tail grubs, and a Battlestar 115 Jerkbait with single hooks for Striped Bass while I honed in on my Barred Surf Perch game.
About half way through the session I had a breakthrough idea, which I am eager to share with you. I decided, to track where my bait was in the course of its retrieve in terms of “beginning retrieve, mid-retrieve, and end-retrieve” and then every time I get a bite, we’ll look up at the water to see what the waves were doing at the moment my bait got bit.
This novel observational strategy provided me with new insight! I noticed, regardless of bite location, there was an ample amount of current passing over my bait at the exact moment the fish bit. The current was provided by two sources. Either waves passing over my bait, or water backwashing off the beach. Every time I got bit, my bait was experiencing a substantial amount of current from either of these two sources. My conclusion by the end of the day is that I can maximize the number of fish I catch, by tracking the location of my bait in relation to the location of the waves and backwash current.
Additionally, these steeper, deeper beaches further earned my favor. The powerful shore break forms a deep lip (drop off) just off shore, and the back wash into this drop off creates a perfect opportunity for surf perch to feed on sand crabs that are being stripped off the beach and washed into this structure.
Today I also realized a principle that I had been mulling over for a while. That is, if I fish a beach hard and the fish are not biting, then it’s time to make the drive and try a different beach the next day to see if maybe the next beach is hot. Today, the next beach was!
I successfully loaded up on a bunch of slab sided Barred Surf Perch and fulfilled my plans for a fish smoke, which you will see at the end of this video. Smoked perch is delicious! 👌 after cleaning, scaling, and brining, the fish are smoked whole. The skin helps to trap in moisture for the most succulent smoked fish I’ve ever experienced. If you haven’t tried it, go for it!
Finally, one question I want to ask at the end of every episode of VGF is this: “Whatever you are going through in your life right now, what values of yours are not being fulfilled, and what you would like to do differently in an attempt to fulfill those values?” You can find a list of human values to help you identify which ones are up for you now, right here: values.VINCEGOESFISHING.com

👍🏾Nice video! I fish a lot of the beaches out where I live 🎣 I always check the wave action 🌊….before I cast. But most of the time, the water is pretty darn good. We are lucky where we live

I have an 8’6” MH SST and can cast up to 2oz on it, maybe more (it’s only rated to 1.5oz). What’s the max weight sinker you can throw on your 9’ M? I’m looking for something longer that can cast up to 2oz lures. Right now I’m looking at an SST, Celilo or rockaway SP.

Get the okuma Hawaiian for 2oz it casts further than any other rod The SST medium 9’ rated to 1oz The SST medium 10’6” rated to 3/4oz I still throw 1.5oz with either. But now I’m preferring 1.25oz weight, it’s heavy enough and I can feel The perch bite and fight better with less weight

Yoooooo Vince! Great video man! Is there any way you could make a quick video on how your smiling those things? They look sooo good! Also… I fished that same spot today and… Nada!?! Guess I need lessons from a master 🤷 Sooo… lemme know if I can tag along one day. I have lots to learn. Thanks for the epic Videos and gear! Stoked on my 115’s and grubs and those hooks are the BOMB! Super sharp and no signs of rust after 3days of use. Great products! Tight lines amigo!

Hi Shawn, here you go man this is how to smoke em kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ-XlpSHqddkkMUfeature=shared Yeah come fish with me. Today the waves were probably way to obig. I think 300-500 might be optimal wave energy. Charlie shares a tip about this, in a video I just published. Check out my latest vid “Big Waves. Big Challenge.” Thanks for discovering Battlestar Tackle! Ya man, I only want to fish with the best and that all I want to offer others too, so I’m glad you picked up the Battlestar 115 Jerkbaits. Some cool new stuff in development now too. Hey to plan a day together please PM me on Facebook. You’ll find me in Facebook.com/groups/CaliforniaSurfFishing

Hello, I learn a lot by watching your video. So, thank you But would you please do not insert your finger into the gill. There is a chance to break their gill specially if you are going to release them. There are many other way that you can hold them. Also it is kind of disrespect to these beautiful fish that are giving us fun. Thank you

That is a great tip. If you intend to release the fish, do not touch the gills. Actually, if I know I will release a fish I won't touch it at all, won't even take it out of the water. I kept these fish for eating. Thanks for sharing that info so people can learn how to properly handle fish for catch and release.
