I can actually remember standing in my parent's basement at age 17, an intrepid young banjo player in my first Bluegrass band, slitting the plastic and sliding the record out of the album and sleeve, not really knowing what to expect, except that this new group calling themselves the secret ingredient in martha white's flour or "something like that", was supposed to be a "pretty good." I think the last song that I had just listened to one minute earlier was Flatt and Scruggs, "No Mother or Dad." I placed that beautiful, perfectly clean, pitch black, brand new record down onto the already spinning turn table, gently laid the needle down and waited for it to grab the lead-in grooves for some song called "Blue Night" and stood back. Ten seconds later...my life changed.

Yes indeed Slickrock Stranger! Great video post. I would have to say that, in my opinion, Hot Rize is not only "one of the Greatest Groups in Bluegrass," I would call them the Greatest Bluegrass Band of All Time! Yes.....better than Flatt and Scruggs, and better than Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys. Why? Because the band has been together now for 40 years - which is exactly half the time that bluegrass has been around. Think about that.......most folks point to the year 1938 as the true beginning of bluegrass - when Monroe put together the first of his seminal bands. That means that bluegrass, as we know it, is 80 years old. To have one band, with virtually the same members, exist for this long is one reason they're the greatest. The second reason is because of all of the incredible original material that all of the members have contributed to the bluegrass genre. "Nellie Kane", for example, is one of the finest bluegrass songs ever recorded. Thirdly, look at the talent in this band. Dr. Banjo is one of the all-time greats on the banjo, as is Tim O'Brien on his instruments. Charles Sawtelle and Bryan Sutton both were/are groundbreaking soloists on guitar. Nick Forster brings skills and emcee talents that are unique for a bass player in a bluegrass band. Yes......the Greatest Bluegrass Band of All Time goes to Hot Rize! I'm glad they're still going stong.
