Great tips! One idea I just thought of after watching your video is my kids old formula warmer from Philips advent. It’s the perfect size for the container and the temps are suitable for drinking since it’s made for babies formula.

do you think that'll work for a porcelain carafe? I know the bottle warmer takes a little longer to heat our baby's glass bottles vs the thinner plastic

I lived in Japan for nearly three years and miss the variety of Sakes I could get. George Plimpton wrote a book about sake that was quite good.

I have that book, co-authored by Hiroshi Kondo. For a while it was the only book out there, but there are some better more recent ones, I think. My favorite is the one written by Philip Harper. 'The Book of Sake,' is the title believe.

Thank you sir! Very informative and well put together video. I was googling how to warm sake at home and your video popped up in results. My method was basically the hot water bath but I don't have a tokkuri. I will need to purchase one. Instead what I did last night, was I used a large glass and submerged it into the bath. Then I poured that into my drinking vessel. It worked okay but not great. Also not even sure it was a good idea putting a normal drinking glass into warm water.

Thanks for sharing your experience. As for putting a glass in the warm water, i guess it depends on the glass. It your not sure, probably best not to try it.

Dang. Never thought of using my sous vide machine for this! A few years ago my wife and I and some friends were at an Aikido seminar in Chicago and at the after dinner party they served warmed sake. We never had it warmed before and they were using boiling pot of water for it. They used Ozeki gold label sake. It was so smooth and delicious. Never had sake like that before. Now I must experiment. Thank you!

Warm sake is great but the warning is generally used to mask the flavor of bad sake in Japan. If you get the really good stuff it’s served chilled or room temp. Highly recommend!! Gives you an entirely different buzz

@@mookiestewart3776 Oh, I'm in total agreement about getting good sake. I just like drinking it warm sometimes. And chilled. And room temp. Depends on the sake, the mood and the company. :)

Personally I only use the microwave in a pinch,or when I’m not too concerned about precise temperatures. The caveat is that you gotta watch it. You don’t wanna boil your sake.

What do you think about the sake sets that use a candle to heat the sake??
@sloppydom
@sloppydom Ай бұрын
That's a great question! Thank you! Actually, I've never used anything like that for sake, but they seem inexpensive, so why not give one a try. I imagine you just would need to be careful as the tokkuri gets more empty that the sake doesn't over heat. Try one out and let us know!

Yikes. I'd be careful warming sake in a ceramic tokkuri in the microwave. Earthenware tends to like to explode from time to time in those things.
@sloppydom
@sloppydom Ай бұрын
Perhaps I've been lucky🤞. I haven't had any problems as of yet. You raise a good point though. It's probably not great to leave one in there for too long. Interestingly enough, I recently discovered that you can actually fire ceramics in a microwave, with the right tools and technique.

I liked this, quite informative. But don't heat glass, and then pour cold sake in. Good way to bust the glass. Additionally, I think a good video would be opinions about Local "Japanese" restaurant's Sake. Taste, heat, presentation, and service. I've had plenty of sake and usually they are "okay". Most are heated too much, and some are just awful to the taste. Which is unusual, because there is just "sake" on the menu. What type?! and how can you distinguish between different types.
@sakegeek2707
@sakegeek2707 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment and suggestion. My sake was not cold, so there wasn't an issue but that is a good caveat. Thank you. As to your question, I think we've all been there. We order sake from a menu not knowing what to expect and we wind up being underwhelmed. The short answer is to look for "ginjo" on the menu. This is a classification for sake made with highly polished rice. It takes extra care to make it, so you are getting an premium product. However there is loads of good sake that isn't "ginjo" (吟醸 ), but that is the short answer. I'll consider an episode on the topic. Thank you for the feedback

You NEVER heat sake in the microwave...
@sakegeek2707
@sakegeek2707 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. This is not the first time I've been admonished for doing that. Some people feel this is sacrilege. Most people who use this method do so for the sake of convenience. That said, there is a right way to do do and a wrong way to do it. I tried to show the best practice for microwave technique, should you be so inclined.
