One thing you can do to punch these out quickly is to preheat your discs.. Just lay them on your wood stove so that they are already hot when you first put fire to them-- or you could even have them slow heating in your forge, so that once you throw them on the lathe and put the fire to it, it should already be ready to start working it.. Then you could punch them out at a much high pace. You'll just have to handle them with tongs since they are hot; which is nothing new for you. Cheers.

Love the product and love to see you iterative process. I also love your statement about price "I'm a blacksmith everything I do can be done cheaper, they are buying the process" I do leather work and do everything by hand and run into that same issue with pricing. Thank you for making that clear simple idea that it isn't just about the product that you are selling but the process and work that you put in to it.

As for the wax cracking issue, try to let it solidify with a cold bottom while keeping the top warmer. So after you've melted the bees wax, take the cup out and put it on a thick metal base plate while you also put some insulating cover on top. This works for large ingot casting, so it might just work for wax casting too. (Though that's just insulating the top, not putting it on a metal base)
@r3nmgod2 жыл бұрын
He should have also kept that very small amount of wax unmelted on the edges for insulation so its not hot to hold

That's the first Square Space add I've ever sat through. Well done Sir. And yes, great idea. I'd sign up right now if I had the extra cash. As a poor college student in the early 90's I used to heat my room by candle until I almost burned the house down. It was a huge 100mm sucker that I would leave lit while I was at class and it would be livable when I got home. But I guess there was an air bubble and it melted out the side. Luckily it burned itself out. I came home too; a melted candle, thick char marks on the furniture, a puddle of green wax on the carpet and smoke damage. But horror story aside, that thing is sweet! It must throw out a ton of heat! (While carefully supervised of course.) But what if it gained a bit of stability to help against spillage? Three little legs or a small flat plate under to store other aromatics? Cone incense or sage or roaches or what not?

I’ve never used bees wax but I used to leave about 10mm from the level I wanted and let the wax harden and pour in more wax to the level I wanted and then put aluminium foil on the top and that stopped the shrinkage for me 👍
@FeuerToifel Жыл бұрын
someone probably pointed it out already. but if not, the cracks form cause the wax shrinks when it cools off. it probably could be avoided if you pour wax in layers instead of filling it all at once. ofc that would make it even slower.

@joshclark442 жыл бұрын
These are awesome! Such a great idea! I like that you did some science and experimented with the size of the Wick and the bowl. Did you try using the cross shaped wick? I think that might make a bigger flame and get it hot enough to have a wider radius too. I think the bowls came out really nice although I'm not a fan of the irregular top. What you could try though, after you turn the bowls, is forging little details around the edge to make it wavy or put a bunch of corners on it so it's curvy star. Maybe try seeing if you can make some horizontal grooves in without deforming the bowl shape. It would be cool to see you forge the molds that you bend the bowls around too. The tooling that you use to make it. I'm not surprised a mere 20 sold out already tbh and I think many people would be interested in more lol maybe open up some pre-orders so people could at least order them as Christmas presents and have something to say "it'll be coming soon". I don't know how long it'll take you though so that'll be up to you. Maybe show off your website where you sell the bowls with that fancy squarespace tool I've been hearing about 😉

You should look into building and induction coil heater that can be used to heat the disc's as you turn them into candle holders. You could set it up on the same side as the torch, and ilt would be much cheaper, and safer. It would limit your raw material selection though. Also the cross wood wicks work better imo.

Hey Tim! Really neat concept, especially since I've got some experience with metal spinning. Would making a mandrel to turn aginst be helpful? It would likely take away some of the individual uniqueness each candle has, but in my experience it could be faster, better tolerances and maybe bring cost down. Plus I think making a spinning mandrel for the candles would be a neat video.
@TimothyDyck2 жыл бұрын
Very cool, have you ever spun hot against a mandrel? Does it work well?
@trevorchouinard74742 жыл бұрын
I have only done cold spinning. I started with thin laser cut disks and slowly worked them into cones. A roller on the end of the tool with some anti cease did the job. Definitely need to build up a feel for the process. I imagine heat is essential for thicker material.
