Love you and this video man - it’s also crazy to me how much money ppl/companies make from tutoring/courses/etc for this test and like you can’t really get mad at em for it bc at the end of the day most of them are providing real value, but it’s like why does this exam require that level of resources? Also it’s crazy to me that undergraduate institutions provide little to no support in studying for this test when the point of college is to help you succeed in the future. But hey man - thanks for your comments and as ppl like you keep being outspoken about it maybe one day it’ll all change.

Hey - I just discovered your channel. This is an awesome video. I'm a college senior and took the MCAT about 7 months ago. It was a long, terrible experience that resulted in a score way lower than what I was hoping for. It's all a funny story now (although it didn't feel like it at the time) because I was accepted to med school a few weeks ago! I am getting really nervous about how I'll do on STEP 1 b/c of how I performed on the MCAT - but your vid makes me feel much more relaxed. Just subscribed - thank you.

I got home, my brain felt really hot, I told my partner to grab a cold towel and that they may need to call an ambulance, then collapsed on the ground. It paid off cause my score increased but since then I've been worried I may not be able to cut it, so this video is very comforting. Thank you

My scores were so bad. I ended up applying to podiatry and will most likely start this summer, not unless some DO school comes through (which I doubt). I feel so embarrassed because I took the easy way out. But I lowkey love the field bc I’ve had foot and ankle issues my whole life and I would have a sense of fulfillment helping ppl out with the same problems (so it wasn’t a complete cop out). I literally skipped out on combined med programs in my own state that I got acceptance to just because they required the mcat. I’m not risking my med school seat over a stupid test that has nothing to do with my field. Only thing I fear is that I may not do as well on steps cus I don’t have mcat experience. I am registered to take the MCAT June 3rd of this year and just started studying today, a little over 3 months before the test date which is just the right amount of time for me to touch on every concept. It’s an exam that shatters your spirit but I can’t let it deter me from my lifelong dream of pursuing a career in medicine. (Aspiring psychiatrist here). This video made the process a little easier and I’ll definitely be rewatching when I need motivation these next few months. Even though you struggled on the MCAT, do you think you were still prepared for the rigors of medical school, especially when it came to taking your step exams?
@SeanDarmal Жыл бұрын
Hey best of luck my friend. The MCAT was of no help when starting med school. The only thing that I found that really helped me was just being dedicated to studying and being willing to devote my whole day to studying. It was a lot of trial and error in my first term of med school. Seeing which study method really helped me versus counterproductive ones, but I honestly feel that if you could get past your first term of med school, you could get past the whole thing. I’m sorry to say this, but nothing really prepares you for medical school. That’s OK though because you pick things up a lot quicker than you think you can and for step, don’t worry about step for now. that’s a whole other beast.

So do you think MCAT doesn't really predict med school performance? I got into Ross but scared of that attrition rate. I'm over here studying for MCAT but it's honestly the majority reading random research articles, got 503 in practice (without having finished ochem & physics content review). I wanna improve it and I don't know if I'm wasting my time.
@SeanDarmal3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was the message I was trying to get across. I hope it came through. But yeah. My performance in med school vs on the MCAT were two completely different worlds. I absolutely think it should not rule anyone out of med school, if you did poorly on that test

Yea I am!
@hannahcook94773 жыл бұрын
I am not sure that this is true. I know a lot of my classmates who did really well on the MCAT (90th percentile +) who have failed medical school classes. I think it really depends on the school and individual.
@SeanDarmal3 жыл бұрын
yeah exactly! wait what part is not true? i was saying that they are two completely different things. performance on one doesnt translate over to performance on the other... but definitely I feel it depends on the individual and school too!

Why you gonna go there? Don't you know this is straight trauma for like 90% of all medical students? 🤣

I like your vids, but I gotta say that this is a bad take. There are multiple studies that show a correlation between the MCAT and STEP 1. And that makes sense, better test takers stay better test takers. Also, the basic scientific knowledge covered on the MCAT (even physics) underpins medicine. The MCAT also isnt a rote memorization test, it tests critical thinking which is extremely important for physicians. That could be why you thought it was trying to trick you. There are physics-heavy specialties, there are psych/soc-heavy specialties and there are alot of bio/chem-heavy medical specialties. An applicants ability to prove that they can understand as well as can think critically about these subjects is paramount.
