Gatekeeping isn't 100% bad. Gatekeeping maintains standards, and this is important. Standards prevent the scene from being diluted. Being an elitist prick, however, and purposely excluding new people from the scene who are curious, but clueless, is bad.
@Remedy462
@Remedy462 7 ай бұрын
Not to mention those standards that people have, they themselves don't consistently maintain because I garuntee there are songs and bands they like but won't admit to themselves and others and human beings are naturally inconsistent creatures because of our stream of consciousness. Let people like and make music they like, diversity is incredibly healthy and the natural state of the world. Expand your horizons.

I used to be super anal about subgenre classifications, now I don't really care as long as I like the music and I've come across so many bands where they are subgenre fluid and have multiple influences even in one single song so it is hard to classify. I'm basically like, "Yeah, I think this is mostly post-metal, but they got other stuff so fuck it, the music rips."
@evilii

Yeah I have the exact same feeling about this. When I was younger I had more "purist" thoughts about what the music should sound and be for me to like it. Now that I'm over twice the age than back then, 20 years ago, I take everything in as it is. For me it's more of the "feel" what the song and/or band brings in.

Well i must say that a burzum Tshirt is actualy shocking from the most bands that are out there at least.. i had this new coworker at work that had a 2 months contract. and he was always silent, never spoke to anyone. and then he showed up at work wearing a burzum shirt. none of my colleagues think anything about it or even know what "burzum" is. but to me it felt like the pieces of the puzzle fall together why he is the way he is. as if i got more answers. so i called him out on his tshirt and he said that he really is into black metal. he liked bands like silencer, mayhem, darkthrone and more classics. and we had a long pleasant conversation about that. since i also like black metal. later on my boss came to me and he said that he heard from people that this new guy barely talks to anyone and seems to be very introvert and silent. and that people can't get more than 2 sentences out of him, and that they feel a bit uneasy around him. my boss said that he has been observing him from a distance and that he was surprised to see him having a quite long conversation with me. So my boss asked me what we where talking about XD

@peternicolini4751
@peternicolini4751 7 ай бұрын
@@ThreadBomb No, I am talking EXACTLY about music. Learn the history of metal before speaking if you didn’t live it first hand. And there is no difference between the two, there cannot be one without the other, and don’t call them clothes, it is image, distinctive from the Masses. But nobody ever thought about it in reality, it was just completely natural. Metal is not only music as is not only image or philosophy. If you separate the pack, any of the pieces, it is simply NOT metal anymore. Weather the music, the image or the spirit. They are one. Only outsiders who DON’T want to sacrifice to Metal cannot understand this. It’s like the difference between bikers and civilians, just without Any club or written rule… and THIS is the Magic of Metal, what makes it special. It must be spontaneous to be real. Fake can be spotted immediately or neophytes (which are very welcome at any age if authentic). There are no written rules, but if you go too much astray it becomes simply something else. Black Metal comes from the Heavy Metal scene. Black Metal IS HEAVY METAL. Go look where Black Metal comes from. I want to share something with the younger ones here, because maybe you were not even born, in the 80’s, Before came up all these fancy names to define metal (if you are metal fans you know how many there are) there were many bands that were like Black Metal in the music and atmosphere. Just nobody called it Black Metal because the term didn’t exist yet. The more commercial the more fake, but in the underground where 1000 of bands you NEVER EVEN HEARD OF existed, there already were bands that today could have been considered Black Metal. Real Metal strives in the underground, in the local bands unknown, not in the commercial product made to sell. That is where the real metal scene is or was (not sure anymore). In the dark crapy recordings and demo cassettes and concerts of local bands in unknown abandoned places. That is Real Metal. And that is where Black Metal (only a name) came from

My hot take (idk if thats a hot ta, but it fits the topic): Black Metal is actually a lot closer to lots of electronic music (especially older ones) than many BM-heads might want to admit. (Almost) Every other metal subgenre is mostly about writing songs, while BM often times creates a musical, evolving soundscape more akin to electronic music... It's less about the message and more about the experience.

You can even make a case and look beyond the norwegian scene and BM in general - I don't want to pose another hot take here, but generally: Oftentimes musicians are way less gatekeepers or elitist than their fans. Nowadays Metal musicians often listen to all kinds of music to draw inspiration from, and even in the 80s and 90s various forms of electronic music influenced BM hence dungeon synth etc. Some BM musicians stated they don't listen to BM or even Metal but New Wave, Synth Pop or Folk music when they want to compose BM songs - if they even listen to anything at all.

I would say that the 2nd wave died around 1995-96, when the infamous Norwegian bands (and others) were no longer underground. Or nearly died, at least. What came after that was a ton of bands that were inspired by the 2nd wave, but incorporated or mixed with other styles to create their own sound. I call this the third wave because there was a clear shift in the mid-nineties. But there are still bands today that make black metal of the same style and creed as the second wave. So I think it is fair to say that the underground "pure" stuff hasn't died out completely.

Tolles Video! Erinnert mich an das Q&A Format!

I like your music and youtube channel even if I don't agree with everything what you are saying. I think that in times, when good quality of sound is not anymore hard to access, staying to raw quality is more of musical decoration than essential thing in whole genre. And by that I don't mean that it is a bad thing, quite the opposite, it's now harder to get proper low quality sound, and it can sound just crappy when stick to the "rules", what happened to me and I know now, that when I will be releasing full album it will in regular quality. It's not nesesery to record music on grinder to make it "true", because not only black metal, but music in general is just very intimate thing, so if black metal is msuic that spoke to someone's soul, then to make their own "true" black metal, it has to came from that corrupted by black metal soul. It's fine to copy style of different band or smth, but to inspire others and make them really enjoy your music, it has to have something new. Even if that novelty isn't obvious. And adding music to tiktok is unfortunatelly very helpful, I get why people are getting upset with black metal on that platform, but the fact that it's appearing in new media is good, it means that it's not dead yet and there are still people enjoying it.

I agree with your take on ghost, however they do have a few metal sounding songs, like Majesty, cirice and absolution. But yes they're definitely a rock band and i think it's silly when people try to argue that they're not metal, because i mean... Ghost has never claimed to be metal xD
@Gregbaltzer
@Gregbaltzer 7 ай бұрын
They actually have claimed to be metal in early interviews around the time of their second album. They actually said "If you went by 80s rules, then we would be Black Metal". I watched the interview, trying to sift through 11 years of interviews since then to find it is damn near impossible. But Ghost's first album was 100% metal. Tobias complained that they were on tour when the second album was mixed and they took all the "bite" out of the guitars, he said they were going to fix that on the third album. If you ever watch them play those songs live at Rock In Rio 2013 they sound a lot heavier. Ghost were 100% a metal band then...now though, it's harder to defend their new material.

Just listen to what you like, what you love and if you want show it to your friends or the world. As long as the music sounds good for you, everything is fine. I listen to bands like Antrisch, Thulcandra, Saor, Harkla, Agrypnie, Orbit Culture, Vredehammer, Allegaeon, Shadow of Intent, Blind Guardian, Sabaton, Kanonenfieber, Batushka, Gojira bla bla bla bla. I don't care about their marketing or over-marketing. If they have good songs why should I complain about their marketing or wanting to get bigger with each release? If I don't like their new style, I just stick to the old ones and enjoy them. Why complain about a band that tries out something new? It is their project, so they should decide what they should play. I understand people that complain about bands not sticking to their old sound and stuff, but there is no need to literally tell everyone over and over again that the new sound sucks. Just stick to older ones and let others enjoy the new modern sound

Don't know about their albums, but Obituary is one of the best live bands I have seen. Take a 70 bands festival, out of the 35 bands you'll actually going to see, Obituary will be number 1 (or close to it). Possibly tied with Immolation.
