I am so glad to see more indie decks being released mass market. I've always hated how the term "mass market" seems to relate to poor quality to some buyers. Some of my most favorite decks are mass market (light seers immediately comes to mind 🥰).

. I personally just buy what I like but I try now only to buy two Kickstarter decks at once as they can take up to a year to receive and it helps me buy less decks. I’m slowly learning that I don’t use the decks I have enough & I should bond more. It is so hard though with people showing off so many truly beautiful and wonderful decks

My thoughts on A.I. art is that it feels cold. I buy a deck from a creator and/or artist because I want to support their vision. I add decks to my (while small) collection because it speaks to something inside of me. Art stirs emotions and beauty, and A.I. art feels lifeless and cheap. That's just my opinion, no hate to the robots, computers, 1's & 0's, or the artists that utilize them.

THIS. Yes. I think this really captures what I was trying to say. It lacks heart, to me. I think that's it. Which is not to say there's not probably a way to inject heart into a project that utlizes it but I haven't really seen/felt that yet.

Honestly it bugs me that creatives, who really should know how much work an artist puts into their art, are okay just bypassing artists while effectively using a machine to smush artists' work together. It feels very personal, and AI art fundamentally isn't unless it's been reworked considerably. And like... AI art is very fun? I love seeing what they come up with, I think it's amazingly clever. But it would feel very off, as an artist and writer myself, to then take that and go hey look at this thing I made. I think it's probably art (I'm yet to be convinced it's really good art), but the artist is the AI, not the person who fed the words into it. Even in context of human artists also learning by copying, it's the computer who's copied and learned, not the human. (Also, prior to AI art, the person wanting to make that art would be commissioning an artist. It seems obvious to me that making a deck that way means they're using a machine to do something cheaply or for free for a less good result, and unless the theme of the art project is something specific to AI art, it really feels like the fundamental reason they'd do that is to save money, which... really hits me wrong.) Idk, I think there's a lot of potential complexity and nuance *but* AI art being sold is very off putting for me, so if I see a project is AI I just close the tab without a hesitation. I don't know how much sense this made I just have Feelings™ about this and it makes me kind of mad 🤣 clearly!

If I was the artist, I would already be hard at work to give you scenic pips. 🤣 The Runway tarot looks to me to be far too influenced by The Heroine Tarot (which Is a favorite of mine). Some of the cards are a bit different, but quite a few look startlingly similar to me.

I counted 5 or 6 in KS that are currently open. I think it's the start of a new trend in tarot art. The issue I have is that when you look at those decks, they look similar, like they're all siblings... And when it gets to the minors, I don't think I've seen one of those decks with the right amount of pips on it yet 🤔

I think AI Art misses out a vital part for me is that human being put something of themselves into it. There is a meaning making process a tarot creator goes through in terms of what art goes in and why. AI isn't doing that. It's simply replicating patterns based on what gets fed into it.

Ai art when used to create something to sell rubs me the wrong way as most ai programs rely heavily on pre-existing art. So in that way, artists hard work are being taken and used without their consent and knowledge, and for profit for someone else. :( On a brighter note, monsoon tarot looks so pretty! We need more pastels in tarot :D

Pastoral, Sign of the times, animal apothecary and Sufi Tarot seem right up my alley. I'm even thinking of picking up the One World Tarot as it would be such a GREAT beginner deck. Just waiting for a few reviews on the card size and stock of the one world Tarot.

Of course I jumped on the Lisa Hunt tarot since I have all the decks with her artwork😍….The Earthly Souls and Spirits oracle has like the art work switched around…ie..The faith card artwork in Mass Market is my “Fairytale “ card in Indie and some of the keywords do have different art but I feel like they’ve just been switched around 🤷🏼‍♀️ no matter I did order because the backs are black instead of white 🤣 that’s my reason anyway!!! I’m currently waiting for the Weiser Tarot to arrive…I actually love the watercolory vibe of the artwork compared to the Pixie Pop but that’s totally just a personal preference thing. But I can definitely see myself replacing my Pam’s Vintage with that one for client readings because it will be so nice to have more representation of different skin tones in an RWS. And the Pastoral Tarot is the first time I’ve pre-ordered a mass market deck in legit years!! I have no idea if the giant landscape cards will be usable for me but it’s just too beautiful and too much my whole cottagecore jam for me to resist. 😂 The fact that the creator of the Buffy tarot has apparently said it is NOT a pip deck gives me so much hope and yet we’ve all been so burned by Insight Editions that I almost can’t believe it’s true 🤣. But I like the art style and the cards we’ve seen so far so? Pleeeeeeze let it be good 🤞🤞🤞

I'm in total agreement with you about the Four of Pentacles. You can see the range of interpretations just between Pixie's depiction of a hoarder and Frieda Harris depicting a fortress. That particular card has become a litmus test for me of whether a deck has something new to say.

I have the Deep, Dark and Dangerous oracle pre-ordered. Another one is the Dark Light oracle, similarly hadowy, with very pretty art. I found Dark Mirror too intense, also, preferring the Oracle of Shadow and Light, or Myths and Mermaids. The Lantern Oracle is gorgeous, and also intense for shadow work. I finally bought Wisdom of the House of Night, which many like, without having read the book series that it's based on. It blends well with the Dark Fairytales Tarot.

can you cover the "legendary witch tarot"? they created a campaign for the major arcana, but plan to do a second kickstarter for the full deck. people who back the majors will get an option to back just 56 minors instead of the full 78 to combine them. i was a little iffy about it, but they said you don't have to pay shipping twice either. i really really love the art.

i fell in love with the monsoon tarot and i am so excited for it. ❤️ the oracles from hay house interest me, but i also kinda don't want their cardstock 🙈 also on AI-art: some art is done beautifully, and the creator has put real work and thought into it. but most of them are just generated at random without any idea beforehand picking the prettiest out of the bunch and that feels just soulless.

Like all other art, if the AI art is thoughtfully done it will be amazing. Frankly I think there are a lot of human generated decks - especially collage decks - out there on the market that don’t have much thought or tarot symbolism behind them and are mainly a cash grab.

Oh…mah…gah. First peek at the Buffy deck!! 😍🖤🤩 Wasn’t this originally slated to come out this October? For some reason I thought so, which is why the March date is making me hopeful…like maybe it means they’re giving it more time so the artist can create scenic minors…?? A fool for Buffy love can dream, can’t she? 🙏🤞🙏 And I share your EXACT sentiments about the disconnect between images and messages in the Earthly Souls & Spirits oracle. I’ve kept my copy for the artwork but don’t really use it as a working deck anymore and am very curious about the mass-market improvements!

Re Hay House card stock. I just got the Prairie Oracle and the Urban Crow Oracle direct from them at the same time, and the cardstock was very different. Both matte, but the Prairie Oracle was suuuuper thin and I almost don’t like touching it. The Crow Oracle (which was just released) was much closer to a thickness we’d expect from an oracle deck. So maybe they’re moving back towards a better cardstock??

Whether it'll get lots of use is another question. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The Buffy Tarot looks promising. it's inevitable I'll complain that certain characters weren't used. and if it's 5 stakes on a blank background I might scream. It's mass market US Games so I'm guesssing you'll be able to snag it from Book Depository!! :) That said, for some reason, getting US Games from Amazon (Canada) has been tough so I understand you might have a hard time. If you haven't yet - try checking with your local book or metaphysical to see if they can order for you from US Games' catalog! This is often a little-known option!

I have backed The Age of Aquarius deck because I am 69 yo so, yeah. Nuff said I really, like the Pastoral Tarot! I It has such a relaxing vibe to it. I told myself I wasn’t going to buy anymore decks…BUT…I now have 3 or 4 (maybe more 😬) potentially on their way to me. Like the Yokai Yochi 😶. Just barely made it in on that. Emails back and forth to Yokai explaining my situation who assured me that if I didn’t make the deadline, they would work with me on getting a deck. Just a matter of my SS check posting to my bank. Whew!

I got the Animal Apothecary Oracle early in my Hay House Deck Club subscription box. It's definitely unique and has a really good guidebook, though the card stock is pretty stiff. Not normally a deck style I go for with animal oracles, but I'm looking forward to working with it. It also pairs really well with the Muse Tarot. My Weiser RWS is due to arrive 9/21 from Amazon. 😊 I actually don't care for the coloring of the upcoming Pixie Pop Tarot. I'm hoping the colors outside of the lines of the Weiser won't irritate me. In the Chibi Tarot, the Octopus only has 6 arms... I'm so tired of seeing Octopi with less than EIGHT arms!! Octo means eight! I've been saying from the get-go that all the Insight Editions fandom Tarot decks would be MUCH better as Oracle decks instead. Then they wouldn't be forcing fandoms to pigeon hole into th structure of the Tarot and copping out with pips for Minors. Lorenzi Tarot is a hard no for me. Weird imagery, no diversity, repetitive imagery. Hard pass. The Creatures Oracle looks really cute. Not sure I'll back it though.

The full set of cards for the Golden Journey tarot is shown on the campaign. I just checked it. Maybe the creator added pictures later. I think it's definitely one of the better AI decks I've seen so far. However, agreed that most AI decks that's out there so far doesn't do it for me. The main problem I think is the decks either lack cohesion or well thought out symbolism. I think it is possible to have good AI decks, but they will take effort and time to make. It's not just a matter of generating some pictures and putting a title on it. To be fair, there's also a lot of "cash grabs" as you have said with collage decks or historical art decks, but it's still possible to find ones that are well made. I would imagine it's the same with AI decks.

Seeing more than half a dozen AI tarot decks pop up on kickstarter this past month, I feel aggressively discouraged by this trend. There could be a creative way to utilize AI for tarot, but so far most of the art looks very similar, disconnected and blurry in a way that looks detailed at a distance but nonsensical in detail. Even the Golden Journey, an AI deck made by a well-regarded publisher and quite cute at first glance, falls through when you take a closer look at the art and see the similarities with every other AI deck. It doesn't help that several of these AI kickstarters are completely unfinished and unprepared for publishing, but the goal $$ is low enough, they'll be sure to get paid. I apologize for sounding harsh and I really do think there's potential for a special quality of AI-generated deck, but I have the gut feeling that folks unaware of AI art programs are going to feel disappointed in the long-run by many of these ideas so far.

I'm not going to suggest taking a deep dive into the 8+ recent AI tarot kickstarters for what might look shady or not, but I think it would be wonderful to see a video about your general criteria for backing an indie deck's funding campaign. When you set aside the question "Am I interested in this?", what do you appreciate seeing in a campaign that would make you thrown in your money and what would you see as a red or yellow flag that would make you skip or hesitate? You have incredible experience and good discernment about these kind of things, so I feel like that would help others to consider before an impulsive buy.

Feel the same about AI decks. If they have deep thought put into them and are by someone experienced with divination they can absolutely be a great alternative for a creator who might not be very artistically inclined! The cards are beautiful but they feel like images found on Pinterest after searching up those specific aesthetics. Maybe if there was a guidebook it wouldn't seem so...concerning lol? But without one, it makes me think anyone could make pretty images and sell them as long as they call it an oracle deck.

The thing that bothers me about the Weiser coloring is that it feels to me like they recolored the figures, rather than making shifts to facial features and such to reflect different ethnicities. So in that way it kind of has a "brown-washing" feel, if that's a word-like, not so egregious as literal blackface, but still feels "off." Also LOL I actually can totally use recipes as a keyword to think of lots of things (social scripts, how pieces of a spell come together, formula vs. improvisation...) but I also am someone who spent LARGE chunks of hir life reading recipes for fun as a kid and had a database of over 9K of them at its height 😂 clearly I am not normal.

Different sound of video wouldn't be such problem, but it's also not synchronized with the image and it's a little bit off (at least on my side, no idea if everyone sees it that way), which is a bit annoying, fortunately, in this type of video it's not such problem as it would be in like Show&Tell when there are more and bigger shots of you (probably bad expression, hope you know what I mean - like in this video, most likely everyone would look rather on pictures not as much on you :) ) The Signs of Time oracle looks really very interesting. "chibi" means generally small or little in japanese, but it's mostly (i.e. worldwide, online) known for use for this style of drawings when characters are drawn somewhat in kids-like (big eyes, big head) style. (simply said) Zodiac tarot looks very nice to me as well, as someone who's interested in astrology too (though it was kinda put aside last few years), I wanted to have a deck aligned with astrology a this one looks nice, I actually rather like the art (from the little that's to be seen there). Ooooh, but the Earthly souls & Spirits Moon Oracle! *__* And it's mass market, wooow, I need this. :D And the Pastoral Tarot!! (oh no, and I've thought I'm done with buying cards for some time now... :DD)

Yeah. i spent HOURS AND HOURS synching audio/visuals and somehow when I uploaded it there are huge chunks out of alignment :( I could cry. It's so upsetting spending that much time working on something (this video took me about 10 hours in total) to have it end up that way. :(

Speaking as an artist, I will never buy an AI deck, since these tools were created off the backs of other artists. They're trained through taking art from other artists without their permission or with any compensation. It feels dirty and disrespectful. And the response from the communities that use these AI tools solidifies my distaste for them, since they seem entitled to our work and berate us for pointing out issues with the morality of these tools. I think AI art could be amazing and have its place, but because they're made from stolen work, I can't support them.

AI art bugs me because it’s taking its source from OTHER artist. It’s like stealing. I’ve seen artist love it and artist hate it. To me it’s too slippy of a slope. Art is already very hard to control the copyright (ie China and stealing). However I do like the images from it but until I know the full scope of them, I pass. Add this now on top of tarot which is being over ran with China stealing indie decks and selling crappy knockoff. So AI tarot will be a hard pass, no matter how pretty it is.

EDITED FOR CLARIFICATION I want to give a different opinion on AI art. I am a creative person, but I have not been successful creating artwork. AI programs are giving people like myself a chance to manifest our visions that could otherwise not be made into reality. I really hope that those of you who believe the art is "easy" or a "cash grab" will look at those projects through a different lens. AI art is similar to collage in the sense you are taking pieces of other images to create something new, in this case with the aid of a computer. It actually takes quite a bit of work to create the art that you are trying to convey, through revisions of word choice, sentence structure, etc. We should absolutely be viewing projects with a scrutinizing eye, but there will be fantastic projects alongside the "cold, cash grabby" projects, just like any other form of art. Collage artists didn't make that art either. They put in time and effort to create the product. Some are beautiful and well thought out. Others are obviously not. My hope is that others are able to see that while some creations may be done poorly and hastily, there are creators who do care about the work they are creating and will put in the time and effort to convey the meaning they intend for their work. Just like any other form of art, if it's not for you, it's not for you.

I can agree with a lot of points that you've made but having tried out programs like midjourney I feel that how AI art is being used so far is very different from collage art. Collage art means a person is selecting, isolating and combining specific images and elements to convey the message they want. AI is a different process - the person inputs words and then selects generated images until they hit upon an image that is what they feel is best. If someone mixed collage and AI that would be pretty dang cool to see, but I do not see the art mediums as essentially the same.

At the core, yes. AI art is feeding an idea into a computer and the computer generates the image. If I'm going to make a collage, I'm going to Shutterstock and typing in a word like "butterfly" and choosing a butterfly that I want to use. What I do with it from there is up to me, as an artist. I could be super creative and lower the opacity and blend it into other images, or I can slap a keyword on it and print it. When generating an AI image, you can start with a basic word like "butterfly" and just like the example I shared, you can hit the refresh button a couple of times, pick one you like, and call it a day. An artist who wants to use AI as a tool will NOT be doing that. You may need to enter 6-10 key words to get the idea you're looking for, then consider/change/experiment with word order, phrasing, even specific word choice. On top of that, you'll choose an image that you like (which might have been out of a couple hundred) and then you can work with the AI to refine that image further, bringing in more detail or clarity. There are also a bunch of art styles to work with, so the same process can be used for surrealism, synthwave, realism, etc... It's not as simple as pressing a button and selling a tarot deck. I think it's really important that as we advance as a society we learn to adapt and grow and recognize that art does not always have to fit into a traditional understanding of the word. There was a time when people didn't view digital artists as artists. AI art is a step in the evolution of art, and as someone who absolutely adores art and technology but doesn't have the artist abilities to create 'traditional' art, this is really exciting.

@@hwest360 I understand the use of AI art as a tool and the excitement and value it can bring as a medium. I do not believe it is similar to collage. I believe that those are two different mediums and comparing the two risks devaluing both. I work in graphic design and I was introduced to midjourney by friends in the industry who use AI art to craft initial ideas from client requests - however, they use it as a tool, not an end result: the tool generates images that they use as a starting off point for the art they begin to craft. Just as a collage artist would use the image of a butterfly as a starting point to develop further and not simply print out a premade image of a butterfly to sell. That's why I think an AI image collage could have potential, but an image crafted only by prompts fed into AI does not have the same appeal for me. Also, when I say "potential" I mean a potential to craft into a deck to monetize and sell. If someone made an AI deck for their personal needs, then that makes sense - utilize it to one's hearts content. If it's made as an indie deck to sell to others, will that be as effective? Is more work needed? Especially when it is made by the same algorithmic program. I can spot an AI deck on kickstarter now by image alone, so I think there are limitations. Maybe the future will be different. At this point in time, I am cautious. Embracing the future does not mean embracing every new thing despite my personal taste. That's all I'm saying.

AI art is new and there are people who do not understand what it is or how it works and collage is, in fact, a very reasonable way to describe it to someone who does not know what it is. Midjourney is one of numerous programs, all of which are using compilations of pre-existing photos and art to mend, mold, and mesh together to create something new, which is what collage is. In some AI programs it is easier to see where the source images are or what they are from, others not. Offering a comparison to help others understand a new concept does not "devalue" either form. They are both valid and beautiful, and both can be used poorly or to create beautiful art. They are, as you said yourself, mediums. The end result is the product of the artist, not the medium.
