Hey Chris great channel! Asked this question in your live streaming earlier this week that was cut due to your internet and hoping you can answer it here. I have a glacier spa 13’ on order and live in Waterloo Ontario. My contractor dug a 2’ deep base and back filled it with 6” of HPB and said it’s acceptable as it’s self compacting and won’t shift. Another contractor was hired to finish the deck after my original one went MIA and I’m expecting the swimspa any weekend now. He insists we put a 4-6” rebar reinforced concrete pad and take out the HPB as it’ll shift after a season due to frost heaving. Thoughts? Is this necessary? Since I’m having a deck integrated around the swimspa I don’t want to deal with the potentially costly mistake of using the wrong base material.

Your second contractor is right. It will move after a season of freezing and thawing. For a standard 7 foot hot tub it would work but I wouldn't put a swim spa on it. Do the concrete pad and 4-6" with rebar is exactly right

Hi Chris, I love you videos and all your content! Excellent unbiased advice and information. Can you comment on Hydropool as a brand? Their shells appear to be well made acrylic + hand-applied fiberglass, the plumbing is secured w clamps, but the insulation is only with that cheap heat wrap, and there's a barrage of cheesy marketing packages that are overwhelming... thoughts?? Thanks!!

Agree, its mutton dressed as lamb. The shell rates middle of the road, the parts are a mix of good and middle, the insulation is low cost low R-value and the performance jetting is lower end. And the marketing and gimmicks are GREAT!!!
