@@dsesuk I'm an electronics nerd, NOT an electrician. When I see anything coloured brown on a household wiring system (not that I'd ever fuck around with such things), I assume it really is mains live. @@digitalradiohacker i dont think it should be marked, i have never marked it, like he said its not mains voltage, and really it should only be an electrician working on it, and they would know anyway. if i had my way i wouldn't identify switch wires behind a switch either, as any electrician would know they are all live, its only the idiot diyer that wouldn't know, and that person shouldn't be messing around in there if they dont know what they are doing.

5:35 Its a fact - plasterers HATE electricians. I swear they do this shit on purpose just to fuck us up. The best I ever had was a new kitchen built as an extension. It was a very long house so I decided it would be better to run a "daughter" consumer unit in the kitchen fed by a 16mm t+e cable (off a 63a MCB in the main db if your interested). From there I had a lighting circuit, 2 20a radials and a 32a cooker circuit. All in there were 5 cables running down the wall in the kitchen which I fixed firmly and neatly with glavanised banding. The idea of course is that the kitchen would be rendered and plastered and I'd come back on my 2nd and install the c.u along with everything else. The first thing I noticed is that the cables were gone. Just disappeared. I called the customer who didnt have a clue so I asked him to call the plasterer and find out what was going on. The plaster apparently said "there were no cables on that wall" and that was that. SOOO, I cut a hole in the ceiling and found my cables all just rammed up there, still bearing witness marks from the banding i'd secured them with. I got my fucking grinder out and cut a new channel in the finished and painted wall. I brought my cables down and installed my consumer unit. I only told the customer what I had done once it was finished. He had to get the plasterer back out to sort it but as far as I was concerened - it wasnt my problem. I even charged an extra £40 for having to do the extra work. I wanst taking any prisoners on that one. Sparkys 1 : Plasterers 0

"Yeah, he's on KZbin, let;s hear him swear at us so we can laugh at the language he uses ha ha ha ha ha...........................!!" Electricians always think they have to be wrapped up in cotton wool and looked after and no one else has work to do. But I have been pissed off at tilers before making things to tight and spent half a bloody day filing their stupidly hard tiles, ain't it strange, it is always when those super hard while ripple tiles are fitted with the super hard glaze, where the holes are to small or they leave things to tight. As for the plasterer with the wire on the roof, that would be very funny if it happened to someone else ha ha ha! :-D

Hi David, Love your video's and never change please! I've been there before with the heat alarm cable being ''lost'' in the ceiling. I've found a solution to it that worked quite well with the AICO alarms I always fit when the cable has been pushed up and you know where it should be. Mark and cut a 1-gang dry lining box hole in the ceiling, this should be big enough to stick your hand through to grab the cable, then fit the dry lining box. The AICO alarms have many holes in them, and you can easily use these to get a fixing to the back box. Also, because there is a layer of polystyrene on the base of the alarm, when you screw it up to the box this squeezes the polystyrene so there is no visible gap. Another option if the tacking hasn't been done yet is to fix a 25mm metal box direct to the joist, making sure that it's proud a good 10mm. This will piss off the tackers enough to make sure they cut it out! All the best, Levi

We alway centre to the lugs too, so many times you see people doing it to the edge of the boxes and as soon as they start fixing them the box deforms slightly they try to compensate for it then the lugs are out 😂 we also connect every back box with a 20mm galv coupler, it keeps a standard gap everywhere also as a means to wire through if needed 🤘
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I want to see that line passing through where the screws go. That's a good tip with the coupler; I use it when like-accessories are going together, but I should probably employ it all the time to ensure consistent spacing.
@whatthedeuse4 жыл бұрын
David Savery Electrical Services, it’s definitely worth doing the only thing to note is I’ve found that a lot of back box manufacturers use dies to punch the knock outs that differ slightly in alignment from one another so you have to turn the boxes to suit the alignment before knocking them out and committing to the position of the coupler 😂 there’s always one set that works.

John Lewis light fitting. Can tell by the font on the sticker and the fact it starts with 'JL'. Very tempting to remove that class 2 fiddly-tiny-cack-joint-effort-thing and put in a couple of lever connectors, put a crimp eye on the CPC and then put the mounting screw through it before the ceiling plate. The only fittings that now don't include those horrible terminations are the ones the client wants fitting in a 1960's house where the otherwise sound lighting circuit has no CPC. It'll be significant pain in 10 years when you spend half of an EICR dismantling apparently metal chandeliers where you can't get an earth reading from the mounting screw, to discern whether they are improperly installed or in fact just class II

Damn Tilers, its not rocket science to cut the tiles to the edge of the metal or dry lining box( I hate dry lining boxes under tiles when they have to be changed! ). I went to fit some socket a couple of weeks ago on new tiles with the boxes completely tiled over with just a small hole for the cables sticking out. Nice to see you back David
@Ragnar85044 жыл бұрын
In round box country they usually cut the hole the right size (hard not to if you're using a hole saw) but up to 2 cm off. Or they tile over the entire box. Last kitchen job I did was had the tile work done by the homeowner, that looked pretty much the same as yours here. At that point I also discovered that the Italian back boxes the HO specified (officially sold here but quite uncommon) use #6-32 UNC screws rather than M3.5 as I'd thought. Ended up using 3.5 mm sheet metal screws where I needed longer ones. Who would've thought Italian back boxes are actually American, including the screw threads?
@sstorholm3 жыл бұрын
@@Ragnar8504 yup, Finnish electrics use round back boxes as well, they are really useful since you can fit additional rings on them, and make them proud of the tiles, making sure no one tiles over them. Same goes for ceiling boxes, they are even larger diameter, making for easy termination of all sorts of wiring with just flying leads down to the fixture, or even a socket in the plate if you want to get fancy, the new DCL plugs are marvelous since the plug sinks into the plates completely.
@Ragnar85043 жыл бұрын
@@sstorholm Tile installers hate that though. Good ones cut the holes in the tiles just right so they reach the edge of the box but don't cover the screw holes. I wonder if we'll ever get DCL connectors in central Europe! So far I've only heard of them being used in France, Sweden and Finland. We don't even use ceiling boxes here, except in concrete ceilings. You can buy ceiling boxes for plasterboard ceilings but they're only rated for 2 kgs, which isn't an awful lot. They're only fixed to the plasterboard itself, not the joists or metal framework, like the orange boxes for accessories, the ones with those little metal tabs that swing out and grab the plasterboard from behind.

I've seen those "terminal boxes" on the cheapest 36 W fluorescent strip lights available in the whole country (€ 9.95 I think). They really seem to be designed for nothing more than a 2-core flex, preferably 0.75 mm2. I wonder if we'll be seeing ceiling boxes here in the near future. The new regs (not yet in effect) will require back boxes for any lighting position that doesn't have a light connected by the original installer, i.e. pretty much any lighting point in a new/renovated flat. Apparently someone's been sufficiently annoyed by countless cables dangling out of walls with - at best - some choc blocks on them, at worst some paper painter's tape :-D The problem is that only one manufacturer makes flush boxes for lights in plasterboard/plaster ceilings and they're rated for a gigantic 2 kgs. Not sure what we're supposed to do with heavier lights or what's going to happen if the first unsuspecting homeowners hang crystal chandliers to those flimsy dry-lining boxes.

Good video David, in particular your views on “so called” class 2 lighting, with no provision for earth connection in the lighting fitting. I have often pondered the fact that IEE can change regulations at the drop of a hat, but can’t regulate for these type of light fittings. Keep up the good work, and it’s great to see young Daleep getting some good front line of experience. Any news on Nigel, is he keeping well?.

It's a result of lack of communication. I guess it's a lockdown. That tile is easy to cut. I always like to hear from both sides before misjudgment.
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
I'd have to disagree about it being a miscommunication: the tiler can see the box in the wall and knows an electrical accessory is to be mounted onto it. I shouldn't have to leave him a memo asking for the tile to be cut to the size of the box! As for the tile being easy to cut, well that may be the case, but why should I have to finish another man's work?

Do you ever fit a dry lining back box where your smokes are going? Or a round plastic conduit box? This might signal to the plasterer a bit more obviously not to plaster over the thing.

Not usually Steve as I prefer the hole to be as small as possible to help maintain the fire rating of the plasterboard ceiling.

What is it with other trades. Covering boxes, cables ect. First fixed a bathroom before the joiner went in just before lock down, cored hole in wall for 4" fan,ducted it and wired it. Went back and the joiner respotexed over the fan hole and cable, I was fucking raging. Had to get the ladders out and measure it from outside and cut out with a dremmel. 😂

Brilliant, again. Thankyew. Question, if allowed? Tell the work experience chap that his college will be “adapting” any outstanding assessments he may have. City and Guilds are monumentally passing the buck onto colleges and only this week have they taken this decision. It’s an absolute disgrace, every college can choose how they wish to adapt, from setting online exams to simply predicting grades . No standardisation at all, just a total mess. Learners like this lad who clearly is committed and conscientious will be feeling pretty pissed off when the lazy can’t arsed ones are awarded the same qualification .
@amunderdog4 жыл бұрын
Also he should be paying attention to Mike Rowe
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Daleep got word this past week of what was happening. It sounds like a shit-show, and the lazy kids who never bothered to dial in to the online lessons will probably be simply rubber-stamped as good to go which short-changes the keen kids who put the effort in and tars the whole 2020 graduation year with the same bad brush.
@titmando11994 жыл бұрын
My college has done the same, how-ever it's for adult learners only and they've just introduced live lessons and online exams the caveat is that even though we may pass the online exam it isn't the required City and Guilds exam more of a mock and we are still required to attend an invigilated exam on site when this pandemic final eases off.
@MizunoIronMan4 жыл бұрын
Titmando Perfect example of the way this years course will be postcode dependent for quality . Distance learning has also been undertaken since lockdown in my area. As with Daleep some learners have engaged and others haven’t. Learners retuning to college to take an exam is not under consideration. City and Guilds should not be giving colleges licence to choose their own option, it should be the same across the board .
@MizunoIronMan4 жыл бұрын
David Savery Electrical Services Best of luck to Daleep in securing a start somewhere, sounds like he has got the right potential anyway . A few days with David and Nigel can’t be bad for the CV 👍

Stick a terminal block on the end of the cable or write needed on Celine they wont push it back up - the plasterers assumes it an old pendant- seen it so many times
@AndyK.14 жыл бұрын
Do one That was my thought. 4 new spot lights. No need for pendent cable. Dave did write smoke on it though. The boss probably just told the apprentice to get rid of the cable from the other side of the room
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
Maybe something more obvious should have been on the end of it, although the builder was there when we installed the cabling at first-fix, and other trades shouldn't be doing anything with the wiring regardless of whether they think it's old or new; it's not their problem and they shouldn't be second guessing it! I imagine you're right though and it was mistaken for a defunct pendant.
