A few pointers…. A) Mount it so it’s up off the floor about 3” B) When you first turn it on turn on High to Burn the Soot off and the adjust Heat setting. Do the same before shutting unit off. Rule of thumb about five minutes on High C) Use Kerosene instead of Diesel, It burns Cleaner. D) Carry a Spare igniter for it. They have a somewhat Short life span. Hope this helps, Stay Warm

From what I understand is kerosene lacks the lubrication that diesel does and it could be hard on the pump. I run diesel in mine with a touch of Lucas fuel treatment and it’s been running great all winter. I reprogrammed the unit to use less fuel but move more air, it was 1.8 Hz to 5 Hz range, now it’s 1.4 Hz to 4.5 Hz. I run it on its highest setting for a little while just about everyday to burn the soot out. It seems like the shut down speeds the fan up and dials back the fuel to burn off the remaining fuel. I’m not sure if it’s necessary to run it at max just before shutdown.

😂😂 Mav I’ve had my experiences with Chinese Diesel heaters, from my mistakes I would say. Your exhaust will get super hot so will melt those cables you mentioned and as it’s already done, it’s melted your green floor and could catch on fire. I would put some heat shielding around the exhaust and lift the heater off the ground so it’s not touching your floor. This isn’t coming from an expert who knows if all but from someone who has fucked up and learnt some things long the way 🤟🏼

Not just Chinese diesel heaters; there’s been some imported ones from Philippines or Vietnam (can’t recall; was on a fb group) and it became a fire hazard this way too. Tbh, all heaters will have this issue- just basic science 😅

We use that same heater. It is awesome once you get it setup right. Find a place to mount it outside, if possible, and run the air into the truck. Much more enjoible and peace of mind. Also you have to leave a door or window up when you first turn it out. Onces it warms up your good to go

Always test a heater outside before mounting it inside. At least an hour of test burning to make sure everything is burned off the hot surfaces. Always make sure the exhaust is at least 4-5 inches from anything that can be damaged by heat - especially if it's flammable.

I bought a copper elbow for my heater. I cut a pop can up and wrapped it around the exhaust and clamped it. Works great. Makes a close hard 90 degrees.

If you do plan on leaving the unit inside, I would build a base for it to get it off the ground. That exhaust will get hot enough to burn your truck down as you already experienced. Also some exhaust wrap can go a long way.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing when I saw how little empty space there was under the unit. And if it’s off the ground there won’t have to be such a sharp bend in the exhaust which will make it less likely to come off I would think.

Your tail gate sticking problem is fixable without replacing anything the latch linkage is adjustable and so are the strikers on the box ... I work at a body shop so I adjust tailgate fitment and smooth latch operation all the time. Lubrication also helps on the latches and handle. You need a T30 bit to remove the cover and a pick tool to make the linkage shorter. a T50 bit for the strikers I believe. If they are to far in it will case sticking and allot of tension. Do not try to release the plastic linkage conectors without the truck being in a heated garage or when it's warm out because the plastic gets brittle in the cold and will snap.

But I also am comfortable enjoying my own company at times and need that break from constant social interaction as well. As for the evolution or why introverts exist, I imagine there are a lot of reasons. For example safety, like really needing to know people and establish a trust to be comfortable around them and actually trust them to be social amongst them. Definitely a spectrum of introverts as well. Being an introvert doesn’t mean you don’t like people or crave social interaction at all, that is part of being human for sure, just means you don’t crave it at the level extroverts do. I think everyone has both sides in them to a certain point and those sides show more in certain situations

Ok. Coming from someone in the energy field, you should NOT be burning 2 fuels next to each other (diesel and propane) theres gas exhaust in the air and the spark from your diesel combustion can cause a fire or even explosion.

I've used the other style in my bus for the last 5 years, with the external fuel tank and fuel pump... not sure if I'd like the internal tank and that loud assed ticking pump! But, I do know I had to run it on low when it was -9F outside. Another thing... if you run it on low very often... run it on high for a little while to burn out excess soot from the burn chamber and glow plug. You're heater will thank you for it! I'd by mine again👍

I have a couple of these heaters. The best way to run the exhaust is straight through the floor. They are designed that way to reduce the amount of soot buildup inside the unit.

We use those heaters to heat mobile labs in the field. They work great. Install one in the hi ace and run the exhaust straight down through the floor if you can.

Those hose clamps were for tightening the exhaust hose onto the header/outlet on the heater and the little rectangle with 2 round outlets is a muffler for the exit of the exhaust. It should also definitely not be just set on the floor. You need either a stone/concrete or metal plate under it. Or at least a decent sized air gap to keep it away from anything flammable.

Put the heater on the roof rack and then pipe the actual heated air down from the top into the side window with 2x 90° 3" PVC pipes, or 3" metal flex duct , easy set up and take down and you can just keep the heater on the roof rack ... and then just let the exhaust go right out the top of the unit...

Finally! You got one for there :) although you want the fresh air intake OUTSIDE or you will just be recycling the air in the truck which is not good for these things they can suck all the oxygen out!! also it is not good should Monoxide ever get into the system. You also needed to put it on something higher ( some people use blocks of wood either side of the pipes but you knew this before you read this comment. You also need to get one with an external tank because that's dangerous. I don't like these because that exhaust gets to 392F when it's at top heat and that diesel will go up. . Hope to see improvements in future videos. These heaters when they are installed right are much much better than gas (as you also know from your other camper) But waking up to 0 condensation is the best bit after being warm all night!

It's ok where it sets, but I never heard you say where all that diesel came from? But you need to put something at the end of your exhaust pipe instead of letting it flop around under the truck. Also some people will say you need to put a piece of metal under the heater. I say you should put a piece of fire stone under it and in front of your wiring harness you have running thur the bed by it. Because metal will still transfer all that heat to your carpet and wires. Dude, I’m happy you made it through the night! These units need a good burn in for the first run and will smoke during that time! Your best bet is to put the whole assembly outside and run heat duct into your cabin, I just finished building a box and doing this for my trailer and made a quick video. Those hose clamps that come with the unit for the exhaust are garbage as you have found out. Go to the hardware store and buy some decent stainless ones as they do not seal well and carbon monoxide can leak! Keep all that crap outside and a lot of your issues will go away, including the chance of spilling diesel fuel. So many more tips but yeah, spend some time researching this and it will be your best heat option for any of your camping situations!

Hey Mav you can mount that heater outside and run a duct from the output into the truck. They put out lots of heat so you wouldn't loose much with it being outside. You could make a basket that you can put up and take down to put in the roof of the cap.

Yes the heater needs to be outside and heat pumped in with the heat output hose. The heater the exhaust and fresh air intake all need to be outside. And keep the fresh air intake far away from the exhaust hose. You may have to buy a longer fresh air hose. To keep it a good distance from the exhaust. Only thing going into the truck should be the heat output hose. The bigger hose.

Hey mav, best place to mount that type of heater in your vehicle would be in the front cab behind a seat and route the exhaust straight down through the floor board ina. Safe location. Cuts the noise down greatly and you can route the warm air through your window between front and back. I live right at the beginning of the road you bought that new house on if you ever want help setting it up. I use these things in my perm and portable ice shack. Throw 2 cycle oil in it 100:1 ratio and the pump will be quieter and last longer.

Diesel does NOT ignite by spark like the vapors of gasoline. Diesel is far safer and not nearly as dangerous. Dump some diesel on the ground and "light it on fire." it actually takes some seconds of constant flame to heat diesel to a high enough temp to ignite. Gasoline is not similar, in that,gasoline can ignite from a single spark to its vapors. This is why it is illegal to run your car while gassing up, but it is not illegal to run a diesel vehicle while fueling up. Just some food for thought.

I would think you shouldn't put the exhaust pipe vent under the side of your truck where your canopy is. It should be venting out above where you stay. So that the exhaust is venting out above you. Not traveling from bottom to top, and then going in and around you.

on installs I've seen similar heaters used for in van conversions and such they usually vent out the bottom, maybe a bit to the side, pretty sure as long as he's not trying to use it inside an enclosed space it should be good as natural air movement will keep the exhaust from building up

Hey Mav, I have installed three of these diesel heaters in my Volkswagen buses over the past couple years. I’ve had nothing but good luck with them but yeah, the preparation is everything. I would get some hvac code heat tape and seal the hole you made for the exhaust and make an elevated base for the heater in the truck. Also the intake for the heater’s combustion engine should ideally ran outside the truck. I run my exhaust and intake straight through the floor of my vw bus. I can send pictures if you’d like!

Just for people watching, that type of diesel heater in the metal case is not meant for use in campers!! You need the kind that can sit directly on the floor of the vehicle with exhaust and air intake going out the bottom of vehicle and not touching anything. Be safe! ❤

Mav, I have been heating my Cherokee with a Camco Wave 3 L/P heater. Small 5 lb propane bottle back against the lift gate, Wave 3 heater behind the drivers seat next to the rear passenger door. I puts out a very comfortable dry heat with very little moisture. Being where you are you might want the larger Wave 6 for higher output.

Your experience is similar to Foresty Forest's. He ended up with a custom built fuel pump to make that ticking noise quieter in the night. And had to rebuild the burner unit after a couple months. And drill hole(s) in the van. And diesel stinks if you spill it. He eventually installed a micro fireplace to burn wood and that seems to be working a lot better.

Wrapping the heater exhaust in header wrap and maybe wrapping the wires too will help reduce the exhaust pipe temps and save your wires. You can grab some from the auto parts store in 15 or 50 foot rolls for a decent price. Also I know its already too late for this but sending the heater exhaust out of the top of the shell probably would have been a more efficient route. Cutting a small square out of the shell and drilling in a couple of pieces of sheet metal with a hole drilled in the center for the exhaust would be plenty. Then I would probably focus on keeping the heater up off of the floor/carpet using a metal or stone/countertop surface. This would be to keep the bottom of the heater element from burning through anything underneath. Hindsight is always 20/20. Glad you're safe man, that diesel spill could have been the end of that truck in a hurry.

Hey mav. I use the same heater. Mount the heater on blocks to raise it up and add some tin for heat shielding. I also recommend having the cold air intake hose running out side like the exhaust. The air intake does but out some smoke upon start up and shut off. I’ve had the heater for two years with zero issues.

Definitely keep the heater they work great. Just set it up better. Maybe bolt it down to some 4x4 blocks. And wrap your wiring next to the exhaust. And definitely check out where that diesel came from that was on the carpet.

Hey Mav great vid. Yeah I have an older gen diesel heater and I had to be careful of the exhaust pipe. She gets as hot as the air that comes out. Raise it off the carpet then just wrap it with silver heat wrap thats close to those other wires... good luck

using one for truck camping and ice fishing it's easier to have the unit outside and pipe the hot air in, unless you need to keep a low profile truck camping. Doing that also helps keep the noise of the pump/injector down for you and doesn't take up interior space.

Have you heard of the new heating / cooking device by Instafire? It’s called the Vesta and it uses chafing fuel canisters (not butane). Can use it to heat AND cook. They also sell it at My Patriot Supply. I have a few of them for emergency outages as I live in the middle of nowhere. I tested it with one can of the fuel - the heat generated from the burning fuel kicks on the fan - so no electricity / no external power needed.

As someone who uses a diesel heater 12+ hours a day to heat my converted camper van, I would advise against raising it up on the floor. The gaskets underneath these all-in-one units are not the best, and can leak Carbon monoxide with all of the vibrations from driving. The best kind of diesel heater is the standard one that you'd have to assemble -- mount it directly to the floor, piping both the exhaust and intake outside the vehicle, secure it directly to the floor, and seal with high temp. silicone.

Mav, the first thing I was taught when studying Civil Construction is that diesel is highly cancerous and should you spill it on you to wash it off immediately. I don't think people realise this before they go playing around with diesel. I hope it all works out.

Easy was to solve the problem is run the exhaust hose through the floor directly under the heater. Make the hole 3/4 bigger then the hose. Run the hose straight down to the rear of the box. Get some self tappers, P clamps and mount it up. Problem solved. Bob's your uncle 👍 you might want to mount the heater to the floor aswell..

Ok, new diesel heater, very nice. But maybe you should put it in Steve. Sorry but I'm a big "Steve" fan. So much more room. Cooking, changing close. Being able to bend and stretch before going out into the cold. Get Steve one of those small but effective Porta potty's. Yup,WAY better then sleeping in the back of a pickup truck. Heck I love my pickup, but I'm not going to sleep under a canopy if I had Steve. Mav, have a great day 🌤.

I have the same heater and set it up to run outside and vented the heat inside. I put 3.5” spacers on the bottom to give more room to bend the exhaust. They do make a metal ring to run the intake and exhaust through the floor, which would avoid the issue you had.

Oh man lucky you didn’t burn your truck down. I’ve used that heater for 3 years and the exhaust gets super hot. If say those wires are too close. The best way is to drill a hole down and drop exhaust down through truck bed, and get either a square peace of steel to mount the heater on so it dissipates the heat a bit.
