The Armourer's Bench

Күн бұрын

In 1946 the French military began the search for a new submachine gun. They were looking for a compact 9x19mm weapon and examined submissions from the French state-owned arsenals and private companies. Today, we're looking at Hotchkiss' entry - the 'Type Universel', a unique weapon with a folding stock and telescoping barrel.

The Armourer's Bench any chance we could get a tear down? I’ve got a parts kit that I’m converting to semi auto. Unfortunately I’m missing the rear end cap. Charging handle and main recoil spring.

I'm afraid I didn't have time to disassemble it when I was filming Alan, sorry about that. After the lockdown is over I will see if I can find another example closer to home to do a disassembly video on. Its definitely needed.

Another amazing TAB video I was never aware of this gun, they really went extremely complex to make something small instead of going for the simplest route, sometimes the answer is complexity, but when it comes to military use beyond specialized troops, the answer is always simpler is better They could have added a snap forward sound dampening supressor and shortened the barrel to make it more attractive to specialized mechanized troops on bikes maybe Awesome video!

That pistol grip looks incredibly uncomfortable!

The ergonomics of the gun leave a lot to be desired. The grip just felt weird. Sacrificed a lot to get it to be as compact as they could!

Holding onto the grip it feels like I could crush it. I’d hate to be in a fire fight with it and Adrenalin kicks in. Oops. Now it’s a real compact grip.

A thing that I never get is: ID stickers (or marks) of any kind on historical weapons. Or any 'thing' for that matter in a museum. I don't mean anything that is in the history of the gun. But at some point in recent history someone thought it would be a good idea to glue a f***ing sticker to a historical object!!! I know, with knowledge most of them could be removed without or with only minor damage to the objects surface But damn! The object should be conserved in its original state, nothing removed, nothing added (with exceptions of course but a sticker sure isn't one of them!) Just tie a badge or something to it!

In some cases (like the big "Pahrump, NV" engraving that was shown briefly) it's because that was required by law. For example, US laws about importing firearms mandate that the importer engrave (among other things) the caliber as well as the company's name, city, and state. Sometimes also a serial number. I wish it weren't so, but that's the reality of various laws in various countries. On the plus side, those markings mean this example is fully functional and not a deactivated dummy.
