Back in the 80’s I went to a wedding and stayed in a fancy hotel my first time sharing a room with my older brother who paid for the room on his credit card. After the dance there were parties all night all over the hotel in people’s rooms so I and a friend emptied our room fridge bar of its entire booze content, put it in a gym bag and hauled it around partying all night. I was actually that dumb back then to think it was complimentary. I didn’t tell my brother and the hotel didn’t charge him right away but he got one very large surprise on his Visa bill the next month but at least they didn’t charge him for the bobcat I stoled..

Only 2 years ago I checked into a hotel room that had a minibar. And I knew the drinks in there would be quite expensive, but I also saw a small bottle of red wine sitting outside on the desk and thought, how nice of them to offer a welcome gift. So after all the bars had closed early because of Covid, I went back to my room and sat there enjoying my red wine and a documentary on feral hamsters... and was quite surprised when they charged me for it the next day. Red wine isn't supposed to be cold, duh.

Literally: Room: $150 Room tax: $19.50 Parking: $30 Parking tax: $3.50 Lodging tax: $9 State Hotel tax: $3.00 Airport vicinity tax: $0.76 State room fee: $0.02 Tourism tax: $2.00 That was without meals. If I ate at the hotel, I had to file separate charges to a different budget. If the hotel was kind, I’d get my charges listed under ‘taxes and fees’ where they would just calculate the total. If I wasn’t, my reports had to match my receipts. 😣
