HOTHEADS Hardtop Headliner Install and Evaluation Review For 2020 JEEP JT Gladiator

Hello from Gator Overland, and thanks or tuning in! This video includes a HOTHEADS hardtop headliner install on a 2020 JEEP JT Gladiator with BEFORE and AFTER Thermal and Decibel level evaluation. Though Mopar does offer a ($555) headliner as build option from the factory, this aftermarket headliner kit will save you a few bucks and could yield similar, if not better results thank the factory option. I'm very impressed with the Thermal and Decibel level outcome of this kit. As a bonus, Velcro patches cling directly to the headliner. This kit decreased interior temps by 22deg. F and interior wind noise by 20 dB.

It's videos like this one that inspire me to set aside a couple hours a day watching KZbin instead of wasting my time on other social media platforms...I especially liked that you shared the actual before and after differences in noise levels and temperatures---Nice job John.

CJ wow man! That’s an incredible comment. My idea is, if I have questions and can’t directly find them covered on a KZbin video or in text on a forum or social media group, then it’s worth spending the money and time to do it for yourself in the hopes that someone else that is like minded will benefit from it and better make their own decision. I’ve been very happy with the headliner, I highly recommend it. More uploads coming soon!

Absolutely… I’ll have you know it’s one of the best investments I’ve done and all the upgrades… Literally use it every day.. milder temperatures inside when hot and cold, better sound for music, quieter while driving, and they are also Velcro patch ready 🤘🏼🤘🏼

@@GatorOverland This is actually my first JEEP. I just purchased my gladiator last Monday. Absolutely loving it so far but the interior noise on the highway is a bit much. Especially for longer trips. After watching this video I’m sure this headliner will solve that problem. Looking forward to the cooler temps as well since I live in Central Texas.

Thanks for the comment Marc! You wont regret your decision going with a headliner, regardless of brand or cost. The sounds damping and thermal decrease are night and day difference. Being that yours was ordered with it, thats one less thing for you to worry about as an upgrade. Its makes my legs weak thinking about needing to upgrade a $40+ vehicle in any aspect, but then i remind myself, its a jeep...i signed up for this. Also to mention, im very impressed with the ride and road tracking. i was expecting it to be jeep like, but its definitely a truck. Thanks for watching, more to come soon.

Hi Marc and John, have you been able to find out how different the OEM headliner is compared to the one installed in this video? I'm planning on ordering a Gladiator in a couple weeks, and also live in Florida, and am wanting the headliner. I'd assume the OEM one is just for covering the ceiling panels. So might not make as big of a difference from the sound perspective as the Hotheads. Also, how thick do these end up being? If just about an inch, then shouldn't make much of a difference in my opinion for headroom. Just interested though if you guys know.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Frye that’s a really great question and only one way to find out and would be really interested to know and justify the cost of $555 vs $350. Mark, I downloaded a free decibel app. If you have a moment when you get cruising at 70mph get us a number. Jeffery, I’m confident that either way you go, having somthing is way Better than nothing at all. Cheers, enjoy your JT, it’s worth the wait
@JeffreyFrye
@JeffreyFrye 4 жыл бұрын
That'd be great to get this measurement. After doing little bit more research, looks like the OEM one should be the same on Mopar's website and includes slightly more than just ceiling panels like I expected. I'm sure they're very similar, just would be paying extra for the installation in factory. I'll probably end up going with the OEM from the factory so they're installed from day 1. Now to decide between the Gator or Gobi clear coat... I was leaning towards Gobi but I love your Gator color. I'd also just be doing black fenders and freedom top. Thanks for the great video!
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Frye I parked next to a Gobi JT the other day. I really like that color too.. the only true advantage of the hotheads is the color selection verses only black with the MOPAR. I really like the MOPAR looks but ideally went with the hotheads for color, cost, and to make this video of course! You can’t go wrong either way bud.

I think this just sold me on it. a 20 decibel noise reduction is nothing to scoff at, since volume double every 10 decibel increase. That means it is 4 times louder without the liners. Also, 70db is the normal level you'd get in most non-Jeep passenger vehicles. Also, I'm in FL, and have the black cloth interior, so anything to help with heat is a must too.

Thanks for taking the time to comment… My videos may be a little bit long-winded at times and they are usually less than exciting. I’m just paying it forward, putting in the research, money, and time to document my installs as I go in hopes that it will help even just one person get a better understanding of how something works so they can better make a decision for themselves. Today they are still hands-down one of the best purchases I’ve done… It made a hell a difference and damping the interior noise, which resulted in quality sound coming from the radio… It also makes a big difference making a barrier between my head and the Texas summer heat.No doubt you will find the same benefits from your install

Thank for the reply JP! i have no doubt you will love your JT starting with just the first mile. Don't let the big sticker discourage you, its worth it in my opinion. You have probably seen comments about loose steering, do pay attention to that during your test drives. I never noticed it upon arrival of my JTR order, but it did arrive from the factor @ 47psi in a 50psi rated tire (way too high) i lowered to 36psi which was an outstanding change in an already comfortable ride. I did a chalk test on the tires to find that 31-33psi had full contact with the road and definitely gained some more tracking and road comfort, leaving only heavy wind to push you around every now and then. Other than that, as you have replied to the headliner video, i highly recommend one, any which way you go, factory or aftermarket. Check out my channel as i have done a few more gladiator specific uploads, and will have more coming soon. Welcome to the JT family. Thanks again.

Guido Kartner thanks for the international reply! Yes, I had considered going with a urethane bedliner type material and have it color matched or go black. It would have definitely increased the sound damping, but wouldn’t have been budget friendly. I’m glad I went with a lighter color because it keeps the interior brighter when looking for things without requiring a flashlight in low light conditions.

Thank you for the very informative and entertaining video. I definitely agree with your thoughts about removing the top. From the Hotheads Website, "Easy Installation! Installs in about 40 minutes without removing your hard top," but I don't buy that. Were there any challenges reinstalling the top by yourself and how long should the entire process take if someone is not making a presentation about the installation? More than 40 minutes I would assume.

Thanks for the reply Ron. It will be hands down one of the best investments you make for your vehicle. I didn’t have any issues putting it back on by myself. I’ve since removed / replaced it a handful times just the same. It is definitely easier if you have a extra hand. Top removal is about 15mins and you could for sure have it prepped and installed in under an hour. It’s better to do it on a warm day for good application.

The temperature results are consistent with a better insulator, but it's a bit misleading to use an IR thermometer to compare different surfaces with differing emissivity. If you leave your truck outside, with the doors open to reduce the greenhouse effect, eventually, the entire truck will settle to the outdoor temperature. Everything's going to be the same temperature inside and out. Some surfaces will FEEL hotter, not because they are hotter, but because the heat transfer rate is higher. Metal will readily feel very hot, but fabric seats won't even though they're the same temperature. The headliners don't transfer heat as readily as the bare tops. They're not really cooler (in terms of absolute temperature), they just FEEL cooler. because they don't transmit heat as well as the bare tops. You don't feel temperature per se, you feel heat transfer.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great explanation. To keep it simple, you are correct, the radiating heat of the top is now delayed by the headliner.. ultimately my head doesn’t sweat anymore when I get in the truck at 90 deg. Heat. And I can now hear when driving at 70 mph.

Having had various Wranglers in the mix over the years, I opted to get a JTR this time. I did not order it with the headliner option though as I don't like that Mopar only offers it in black. I've always got Samoyed/Husky rescue dogs in the mix and, as they often have their heads up to it, their white fur hangs and clings and shows up all over the Mopar black headliner. And, it's a pain to de fur. In thinking about making my own light colored headliner so the fur wouldn't show as much, I came across hotheads, saw they offer it in Oak. Though, they only have one pic of the oak headliner on their site against saddle interior. I was trying to find a better pic of Oak installed, especially against the saddle interior I'm getting. Well, heck, then here you pop up with a video like I make. You explain things calmly and easily. Then, you are even putting in the oak headliner agains the saddle interior. Well done. I'll be sure to let Hotheads know they got the sale thanks to your video. Thank you for putting this out there.

I tend to do a lot of research before making any purchases especially, costly ones, so I figured if I’m going to do a review and evaluation, I might as well take the time to explain things properly so the certain people out there that are on the fence about purchasing will have valuable insight and better understanding on whether to pull the trigger or not, especially coming from an unbiased, non-sponsored source. So, you're always adjusting here and there and improving. This time I ordered the Gladiator Rubicon. I picked Snazzberry for the color. Yikes, ordering that color on a leap of faith as it looks so different in every angle and pic online. And, any dealer nearby that has received a Snazzberry has it sold before I can get there the next day to see in person. Gobi, Gator and Hydro Blue are the other favs. Funny enough, I didn't realize until today that I'd come across your Gator in the grass video awhile back when looking for clips of that color online before placing my JTR order. @@2treekiller2 I understand where you going with this. The truck was outside all day and my documentation is as technical as possible for doing by myself in one day. The top was in ambient 70-80 deg the whole day and in the garage for a little over an hour, and then outside in the sun for 2 hours before testing..its possible the exterior and interior temp could have gotten warmer, but probably not enough to make a big difference...it was 20 degrees cooler inside than the top at the time of instant temp testing, which is better than the 5deg differential it was on the first test. and if that's not enough...20decibles less inside is the real winner, the temp part is a bonus.
