The fact that the hotline miami community still has people who exclusively speak like the commenter above, is depressing. I'd have thought that the chronically sarcastic edgelords would've grown the fuck up by now, guess not.

Never before have i loved a series more than Hotline Miami. I don't actually want any continuation of the story, it would ruin the whole "letting it go" feel to the ending. To me, the ending just feels as if you're waving goodbye to someone you know very well before passing on. It may be sad with the fact that, well, they are going to die and some even deserved a better ending, but life isn't all happiness. All good things, must come to an end. And the fact that, once you're done watching the ending of HM2, the menu makes more sense. It makes you feel, remember, aknowledge what happened. And i love that, yet feel sad about it. It's bittersweet in some sense. Cause everyone finally can rest, they won't need to fight it anymore... Leaving this world isn't as scary as it sounds.

Way too many game series are so afraid of letting things end. Always gotta have another sequel, another spinoff, anything to keep people coming back and buy the next game, and it makes me want to explode. In that way, I am glad that Hotline Miami as a franchise ended the way it did.

As someone who’s hyperfixated on Hotline Miami again and has been prowling KZbin for about every video discussing it I can find, this was a fine little treat. Btw I highly recommend the upcoming game 1-900-CULT. It’s a full standalone mod of Hotline Miami that’s approved by Dennaton themselves with an original story and gameplay features that set it apart from just being a copy. Super hyped for it.

Richard is probably the best character, his line talking to Martin Brown kinda helps your summary alot "There is a pretty big twist at the end of this story, one you're not gonna like. In fact, nobody is gonna like it" acceptence is key for the enevitable "twist" of life.

It's interesting that it's Richter and Richard, the latter seemingly acting as a sort personification of death, most of the scenes he appears in being before people meet their demise. At first, it seems Richard's there to simply taunt Richter, noting how comfortable he's gotten, thinking he's gotten away from all of his sins. But Richter always knew there was a possibility of the past catching up with him. He was possibly one of the only ones who seemed to understand that the bad things he was doing, even if it was in care for his mother, could have come back to bite him, and by pure coincidence it did. With that he acknowledges that since there's nothing to be done about the inevitable, why bother fretting over it? Richard seems almost proud of him after he says that. Unlike all the other characters who had a vision of him before their demise, who felt scared or unnerved by him, Richard almost tries to comfort Richter just before it ends. And that's also why those last lines hit so hard for me: "There's nothing I can do about it, right?" "No. By now there's nothing anyone can do about it." "Okay. No need to fight it then." "I'm glad you understand. . . . Leaving this world is not as scary as it sounds."

Really good video! Also interesting to mention is the new game+ cutscene in the second game in which Richard sits in a room with the 13 playable characters and berates them for, once again, starting down a path that only ends in their death and destruction - no matter how much people try to avoid it, the game lets you know directly that there's no escaping the end.
@the2007gamer
@the2007gamer 5 ай бұрын
this is what i was talking about !! i wanted to mention that cutscene but had to cut it for pacing. but its a great scene because it shows how these characters were basically destined to die at the end. no matter how many times richard tried to warn them of their demise, their path never changed, either due to unfortunate circumstances or their own pride and ego. futhermore, its another meta commentary on life itself, the path you chose is the path you walk, and you must deal with the consequences of that path!

10:42 It's been speculated quite recently that the henchman might have tried calling the son instead, due to the hidden call within the game files which ends in the same way. The video titled "Pardo's Plea" explains this quite well.

The call was indeed to Son, not his girlfriend, later on Son calls his number after he died and his phone was in the hands of the Fans who then mistook that for "getting a mission" to wipe out a place full of russians, just like Jacket.

This was an amazing video! To add onto something you said about how Hotline Miami 2 has more focus on death than the first title, this is an interesting detail I never noticed. Hotline Miami 1 is (mostly) from Jacket's perspective and is one of my favorite parts of the game, the static, the hallucinations, the unreliable narrative I truly love every bit of it. Your point in the video adds something to Jacket's view, he does not care about dying, and I believe that's supported by the gameplay (the score system/fast paced) and in-game tips. Just something I never gave much thought to until now. Love the video!

Great vid bro, I'm 23 and had the exact same experience w/ this game at age 16 I was jacket for halloween, at age 23 whenever I start to feel existential I always think of the line "Leaving this world is not as scary as it seems." Edit: My re-run through the game where everything clicked was when I was 19 after what I would consider the most difficult chapter of my life for various reasons and I learned a lot then Replaying the game I really appreciated all it had to say Also just an afterthought but not being afraid lets you live more, and in turn that makes the time you do have much more fulfilling and valuable Edit 2: I also wanna just bring up here thinking about everyone getting nuked in game, and current conflicts in the world, and shit that is out of my control, even if we gotta live doing what we can it still makes me sick that so many people suffer such dire consequences from decisions that they had no part in. There is actually a poem about it in the hard mode credits in HM2

I am a year younger than when you initially played Hotline Miami 2 and I will admit both times I've played through the game I've struggled to piece everything together. This video helped a ton and I truly appreciate it, one of the things that crushed me the most in both playthroughs was the fact that Richter was lying to his mom about meeting old friends when he in fact was out killing tons of people, the thing is he didn't really have a choice if he didn't do as he was told him and his mom would probably be found and killed Also the soundtrack for both games are amazing, I would have never thought I could listen to a 10 minute relaxing psychedelic type song hundreds of times but ''Horse steppin'' by Sun araw proved me wrong its the track that plays in the main menu of the first Hotline Miami

really amazing video, hotline miami affected me too. the lesson I got was that you should not be afraid of death but also not neglect it, and that the actions you commit in your life as trying to make your father proud or be seen by the media or follow the steps of your idols, are only the human nature of wanting to be seen and acknowledged but what truly matters is what you care about because the result will be the same. In my opinion beard, the henchman and richter were the "good" guys in this story, they let go of the violence and at least tried to move on and live fullfilling lives. I think I had some more things to say but I genuently lost my train of thought here, great video.
@the2007gamer

i totallty agree! things such as idolism and living up to legacy are things we as humans naturally are attracted to, but you need to forge your own path based on ideals that are beneficary to the greater good. the mindless violence breeds bad men, and those who are truly bad dive further into it because it feeds their own pride and ego. richter, henchman and beard are the good guys, absolutely, they want out of that violence, but unfortunately, due to the other characters who cannot let go, suffer the consequences.

My conclusion is that because he found out the plan of 50 blessings he tracked down a bomb shelter to survive the blast. If there ever was a hotline 3, it would be biker slowly starving as he kills every other remaining survivor group for their food.

This is off topic, but, I love the character of Tony and how he subverted my expectations on my first playthrough, on my first glance, I thought he was a violent "I love mayhem and murder is fun" kind of character, but I figured out he is one of the least violent members of the fans. He doesn't participate in the murder of the Henchman and he immediately gives up to Pardo saying "I'm done fighting." I love that aspect of Hotline Miami.

I also like the whole sequence at the start of HM2 new game+ mode. Richard basically telling everyone "this is gonna end badly and you all already know that, why are you wanting to do this again?" and none of the other characters in the sequence do not get it (except for MAYBE Beard). EDIT - Beard didn't know either, but Richard seemed to feel a bit bad he was there, as it was just unfortunate circumstance.

You know most video essays that I come across are just flat out terrible and don't even try to be profound. But this one is different. Your commentary doesn't sound like you're having PTSD war flashbacks. You don't sound like you're reading off a script, in fact you sound very articulate and the way you talk makes it seem like I'm watching a 2012 live commentary with how fluid your speaking is and combine this with an interesting and unique view of the subject. The fact you have barely over a thousand subs is a crime against humanity. Incredible video, thank you. Your outfit is amazing as well, I really like the bracelets and sleeve/shirt combo you have. Not sure what the style is, but I love it nonetheless. Rest in Peace to your aunt as well. Your video is, very relatable, in a broad sense. I remember playing HLM when I was younger, and it was the same experience you'd described in the video. I only kept playing because it was so challenging though, I wanted to push to the end because I thought it would set me apart from other people, and infront of my friend, who had gifted me the game. I didn't even realize what the end represented when I got to it. All I was thinking about was the game's hard mode, in some sort of sick way. But it wasn't until, like you, I played it when I was older. I loved this game because of the storytelling, the open endedness, and the complex themes and suggestions and new mindviews it gave me. It was a sort of partial nihilism, and at the point in my life I adopted some sort of apathy to everything. All I was wrapped around was the concept of death, how it affected our psyche as humans and how it can change the course of our lives. I remember thinking that the nuke at the end made everything pointless, but that's because me, as a player, transcended death. It wasn't until I put myself in the mindsets of the characters that I realized that they had won. Richter, he walked away from violence, and spent his last moments in peace with his mother. But the fans had died in terror and without any chance to react. And then it stopped being an event, and more of a state to me. Death wasn't a pre determined thing in my life. I didn't care about it anymore. I just knew that I would be dead, merely affected by death. And I think that was the part that stuck with me so much. I stopped paying attention to time in my life so much. My age hadn't mattered, since I hadn't changed. All I really paid attention to was the people I loved, and the experiences I shared. Even if they were bad, because they were memories. It wasn't really about the futility of my life, knowing I'd die. It was an epiphany I had, staring at the palm trees blowing in the wind with Untitled 2 playing on the menu that life would always go on. If I died now, people may mourn, but they would still go on. It was because of that I want to go on for them and I. If I was so unfortunate to experience their death, I would remember them until mine. I just want to thank you again for your video, your thoughts, being so open with your experiences and everything. Even if it was only for 20 or so minutes, you've given me endless material for thought. Thank you.

I may be a tiny bit late but I wanted to say I couldn't relate to your experiences more here, I was also around 15 when I first played both of the games too, and I was also ignorant to the first game's themes and story, at least initially, I'll give 15 year old me some credit though I did get really into the lore, story and themes immediately after playing the first one, and was aware and reading into the sequel's story theme and characters while playing, making my experience more enjoyable to say the least. Hotline Miami also really made me more aware of all the mindless-self-indulgence me and others might partake in with violence in media. but I also relate to your feelings on death and finality as well, especially having existential thoughts about death at a young age, but not just on death's theme in Hotline Miami as well, but also in life in general as well that you went into detail in the video, as many others I believe do too, with similar thoughts, similar feelings, and similar experiences, and for that last one it was my dad, when I was 8, and its been a focal point about those existential thoughts about death, pretty much everything you listed in the video, knowing everyone around you will die, knowing those you love will die and its likely you'll outlive them, having immense trouble even acknowledging death, let alone accepting it, even down to the birthday parties, only getting even more existential about time, aging, and death, for yourself and everyone around you. But Hotline Miami 1 & 2 really did send a powerful message to those who needed it, like you and me, and I'm glad we got to experience it at the right time, or even at all. Despite it still somehow being existential and impending, the message is still comforting in some bizarre way. Those words of "Death really isn't as scary as it sounds." will always puncture my heart and soothe my mind somehow, amazing game, and amazing video.

i played hotline miami when i was 14, and god this game is amazing, i also didnt really understand much of it back then but still understood it was trying to make me uneasy. trying to get under my skin and i learned very quickly that thats how you should be writing if you want to convey such a deep meaningful message to an audience. so many pieces of literature do this, like how to kill a mockingbird, it makes you feel so uncomfortable with all the things it says and does, but it does it in such a way to make you think "why am i feeling uncomfortable? why dont i like this?" hell even some shows to this day do stuff like that, like that whole controversy with that hazbin hotel episode protraying SA. i love the masterful writing the developers did of this. its honestly amazing and something you can only really fully experience if you come back to it later with a fresh mind, highly recommend for teens to play just to come back and think "goddamn this is.. dark." also hotline miami 3 when? /s

"Disturb the comfortable, and comfort the disturbed." This is what I can say the summary of this game, I don't feel comfortable with the violence, but in a sense, I felt relieve because the game doesn't condemn me in feeling extreme emotions I wanna let out. The violence doesn't feel like it's from a cinema, or something theatrical, it's like...reality, so quick, yet so messy. You only notice it when the carnage is over. Hotline Miami gave me a perspective on how shallow violence is treated as an aspect of entertainment, invalidating many emotions and feelings that contribute to such actions. "Do you like hurting other people?" a question that could be answered two ways, yes, because it's cathartic, because words are not enough, you need to make them feel as you feel, at the same time, no, because some people don't deserve it.

The best part of the second game IMO is Richard and his existence symbolizing accepting death and accepting the ending in the meta-narrative sense. At first I thought Richard got retconned from Jacket's consciousness into some eldritch being but after you consider the person under the mask is the one speaking and Richard is just an idea/realization the cutscenes make a lot more sense. The table cutscene at the start of new game+ confused me as I understood Richard as some otherworldly being. Richard asking Beard "We've met before haven't we?" is Jacket after he "accepted the end" and turned himself in at the end of the first game. What he's referring to is the ending of the Hawaiian conflict when he passes the polaroid to Beard as he was bleeding out - A.K.A. accepting his death before Beard reassured him the paramedics will arrive on time. This game is a masterpiece

Thank you for taking the time to make the joke about initially not realizing the narrative and just enjoying the violent gameplay BEFORE the narrative really started to set in. I think that perfectly shows what the game and its goal was - to highlight violence in video games and bring us to question our attraction to it despite our real world perversion from it. The fact that the game was designed in a way to bring you naturally to that conclusion is in my opinion a perfect example of something unique the video game medium can do. And yet, ironically, it was the highlight of "violent videogames cause violence" crowd of the time.

Hotline Miami 1&2 single handedly changed how i look at video games specifically and life as a whole. Made me accept life as it is, and not be sad that something is over and just simply let go. I loved it soundtrack so much i started listening to other game osts because i discovered that i like that type of music! Made me see through stuff as it is and not be judgemental, for example i really like the second game (i prefer it more than the first tbh) but i wouldn't have known that if i didn't give the game a try and perfect my skills for it! And many many more honestly it's one of my favourite games of all time and i rarely give that title to any game. Thank you for the video, I'm really happy people still talk about the game! Nice drip brother frfr ong

Bro it hit me at 9yo too, my dad passed away then, seems like 9 is the ripe age for it to really affect you in the worst ways. Well that might also be because it was one the ppl closest to me, all I know is I still trip over it to this day from then on I've have more than 30 people around me pass away & that's just the people that I was close to like relatives and good friends, not acquaintances or distant family members, I couldn't even begin to getta good estimate of that number.. Life is just f**ked like that, some ppl get the butt of it other's have it fairly decently, and some are very well off no one's got any control over it

When i found out about hotline miami in 2014 i played it and i fell in love with it and i was hyped for the second and i liked it even more. But the ending of the second felt like an emotional punch to the gut cause i loved every single character in that game but seeing Evan, Manny, Richter, and Jacket get obliterated just made me feel sad and also made me realize everyone i knew was also gonna die some way or another. I accepted the fact there will never be a hotline miami 3 and that everything comes to an end. Like Richter said «Good times never last».

I made a trailer on my channel for the first game because I thought it would be cool and I like making little trailers, but it was also to remind people that this game even has a story to begin with. I also used "Deep Cover," by Sun Araw, the song that plays every time you wake in Jacket's apartment, because it fit really well with the vibe I was going for.

I remember excitedly waiting for Hotline Miami 2 after the first game, but seeing the Execution scene sure as hell didn't sit right with me at the time, and still doesn't feel good now. It was then where the infamous question "Do you like hurting other people?" made me utter a single phrase in response after months, if not longer, of reading it: "I don't know." This was after slaughtering who the hell knows how many virtual people, and yet that one scene made me think and realize that maybe, just maybe, I didn't like hurting other people.
