@panthekirb75614 жыл бұрын
Hotline Miami might actually be one of the greatest and most realistic pieces of video game story telling.. Its depressing as fuck but it feels real in a sense. Video games are usually a form of escape, even HM is like that to some degree as we play as characters that are extremely powerful in terms of strength but.. in this case the characters are actually completely powerless and there is always some greater evil lurking in the shadows, far, far beyond their reach. Its like these days more than ever you turn on the TV or look at the internet and evil feels more powerful than ever *and its winning* while you keep on existing, worrying about your own life while knowing you aren't really in control of the future.
@hammockfather69924 жыл бұрын
@@panthekirb7561 In that respect, the gameplay is perfect for putting us in the shoes of the characters. Constantly in denial about our paths, relishing in the short term power rush that finishing a level or killing enemies gives us while, in most cases, never spending the time to figure out how or why things are happening like this. The gameplay sections are an escape for both that player and the character, which really made me get the message in a way that I couldn't get from an uninteractive medium. It even locks some of the story behind player agency in the case of biker's revelation, if the player doesn't care about the truth then the character won't either. The more time I spend thinking about this series the more I'm convinced it's a masterpiece.
@jarlboof3 жыл бұрын
Hey i have a few questions? What happens to biker? And is killing the two janitors not cannon? Who are they anyway? Just sent to watch us or are they something big.
@xmsjd3 жыл бұрын
@@jarlboof The Janitor’s are just agents of 50 Blessings in my understanding. They’re just the people actually phoning all the masked characters giving them their missions. I don’t think that killing them is canon, I don’t think any of Biker’s gameplay is canon because that would mean Jacket died in their fight, which he canonically didn’t because he has to be there to “kill” the remains of the Russian Mafia. This would mean that Biker is probably just dead and all the appearances seen of him when he’s got his helmet off in Hotline Miami 2 are probably not real events or at the very least not events that have taken place after the original Hotline Miami.

Holy shit, I got nothing to say about this other than the fact that you might have solved the most confusing story no one bothered to solve completely. The dates and everything seem about right. When beard died, I thought he died along with everyone else in the end but by the looks of it, looks like there was a nuke that hit way before the nuclear holocaust on the whole country. I love this so much.
@RoyRogerer5 жыл бұрын
Same here. In my opinion Hotline Miami 2 is definitely the weaker one, since it felt like story was getting in the way. And this is mostly because coming from Hotline Miami 1, I didn't expect any concrete story. So it was only half way through, being utterly annoyed by all the dialogue, that there is a solid story behind it, but by then I had no idea what has happened prior to that. A shame, because at that point I couldn't really be bothered to learn the lore. But this video finally is solving the mystery, and I now realize how much depth there was.

I swear the battle between son and the fans is such a tragedy. The relationship between son and henchman is legit brohood as son actually cares a lot about him and even lets him go on his accord. Henchman is a guy you feel super bad for after getting abandoned by his girlfriend and even gets murdered by the fans. You can even see how much Son cares about him when he actually bothers calling him on his phone to see if he wants to be part of the gang again. Something a mafia leader normally would not put in the time for or effort for a single person. He also feels genuine anger when he does not respond to his call. But then you also see the bond and friendship that the fans have for each other. They genuinely care and it is saddening to see Tony stand over the bodies of people whom he considered friends. It’s actually a really sweet moment when they find the one thing they’d been dreaming about: an opportunity to be like Jacket. Unfortunately they bit off more than they could chew and were murdered by son. Then son’s efforts to restore the mafia are put in vain once he falls off the roof. Kind of funny how the efforts of both sides who aspired to be like the people who came before them could have their stories intertwined. Yet, they both met the same fate for it. Who’s story do you like more? The son and henchman or the fans?

I also think that the fans probably could've won the battle with son, the only problem is that he shot them in the back in an ambush. I think that individually they could kill him. Nothing can kill Jacket. The nuke just sent him into a different continuity where he ended up with the Payday 2 gang. What a legend... However... it separated him into one additional continuity as of recent - Jacket is now an 183cm blob who participates in total wipeout styled game events. Perhaps this is what Richard foreshadowed all this time about death not being so bad. At least, for Jacket.

The story of Hotline Miami is, fundamentally, a tragedy, about people giving into their baser desires - Power, fame, revenge, tribalim, and above all, bloodlust - and, as a result, remaining blind to the bigger picture, and the conspiracy that eventually brings about the destruction of everything they've ever known. It's truly phenomenal, and that's without even getting into the deeper metacommentary.

The actress who accidentally shot Martin is heavily implied to be Jacket’s ex-girlfriend. In addition to the “I’m not your girlfriend!” line and her resemblance to the girl he rescued from the “movie producer” (perhaps he thought she was her?), she’s present at the protests outside his trial standing on the supporters side (which also includes unmasked Alex and Ash) and gets a spotlight during the nuke sequence despite barely being in the game. The biggest question I have is about Richard or Jacket's mask. Who or what do you think he really is? Is it just a manifestation of Jacket and the effect that he's had on the characters, or do you believe it is something more? It seems too simple to just say that it's Jacket himself. The way he appears to others and all.. like Biker saying he met *him* in the desert. Plus the opening sequence to the Hard mode campaign, when Richard is sat around the table with all of the characters and questions them, asking why they've come back. And despite seeming omniscient, tells Pardo that he doesn't understand why it is he does the things that he does. I feel like Richard is a separate force from Jacket. Intertwined, perhaps, but somehow a different being. But when Beard realizes that he knows him, maybe it is just Jacket after all? I just can't make heads or tails of it. I'd really like to know your thoughts about this and/or if there may be a video in the works about it. And again, great work covering one of my favorite games and stories of all time!
