@fMuIcNkD Hotline Miami was inspired by Drive
@illyrian445 жыл бұрын
@fMuIcNkD Drive is much more relatable and much more thematic and generally a masterpiece of modern art. Hotline Miami wouldnt work well in a movie format without becoming either an over the top action movie with zero heart or a slasher movie with exactly as much heart. Keep in mind that the story you are revealing to yourself is by playing dozens of hours in two games that probably together have thousands of hours or more worth of work by the developers and it would not work in a movie format. The movie would probably be a standard 90 minutes but lets say it can be even 2 hours. It would still be convoluted and nothing would be understood. Many plot points would be dropped, much backstory dropped and it ruin the whole aesthetic of the game which is 1980s pixelated gory 2D top game and Jacket is faceless, in the eyes of the player. Besides, Jacket is the Driver and Ryan Gosling excels at that role. Strong silent type with a a shady backstory but a warm side that cares for the people he loves. Seriously idk why people still want shit like that, making other media specifically not made to be movies into movies

I think Richard's intention or "purpose" is to keep the characters grounded in their reality. He appears to characters who don't understand the events going on around them, or who place their own desires/impulses, no matter how detached from reality, above all else. He appears to Jacket in a coma as he tries to make sense of the events leading up to his shooting. He appears to Evan Wright as he's on his way to interview someone for his book, warning him that he should be focusing on his family. He appears to The Son in the Columbian gangster's bank vault, warning him where following his father's life of crime will lead him. He appears to Martin Brown as he dreams about indulging his violent fantasies. He appears to the henchman as he dreams about spending his newfound wealth on a sports car and leaving his girlfriend (the whole reason he wanted to leave his job with the mob in the first place) behind in Miami. In each case, he tells the people that their actions will have consequences, and that they need to change their ways immediately. In Jacket's case, he gives him questions to try and help him piece together the information he has. In the case of Richter, Richard is the only character he shows any sympathy to (unless you want to count Beard at the start of the game on a subsequent playthrough). Richter was a person who was only really concerned with his mother's welfare, and who didn't ask for a lot, either from life or from the people around him. He asked Evan Wright for a plane ticket to Hawaii so he could continue looking after his mother. He didn't kill for vengeance or pleasure, he only did anything to protect the people he cared about, and he showed remorse for his actions. Finally, he showed himself repeatedly to be grounded in reality, accepting his fate at the end of the game, and understanding that his violent acts, despite being left with no other choice, had consequences. The way Richard treats Beard at the start of the game on each new playthrough is also telling; out of all the characters seated at the table, Beard is the only one Richard shows any sympathy for, telling him that he knows Beard didn't ask for or bring on anything that happened to him. Beard and Richter had a lot in common. The killings they committed weren't motivated by violence, they were motivated by concern for the people they cared about; in Richter's case it was his mother, in Beard's case it was for his squad and fellow soldiers. They also didn't ask for a lot from life; Richter only wanted to care for his ailing mother, Beard only wanted to open a bodega. Richard realizes this about them both, and he becomes a much more sympathetic, even comforting presence when he's talking to them compared to anyone else in the game. Basically, whenever the characters are becoming too detached from the world around them, he appears to them to try and bring them back to reality. He's represented by a rooster because a rooster's crowing signals the arrival of dawn and the end of the night, when people are asleep and dreaming. Just like a rooster, Richard "wakes up" the characters from their dreams and fantasies, and informs them that they need to face reality, whether they want to or not.

It's quite tragic how Jacket's story has ended. In fact, how the whole game ended, where most of the people you've met in HM1 and 2 simply felt alone, incomplete and/or unhappy before dying, just like The Son, Richter, Evan (Alone if you choose to abandon the family or Incomplete if you choose to abandon the book up), Manny, The Fans, but of course, mainly Jacket. If things just could've been different... Great work as always, Squatch. Kinda missed those videos, hahah
@SquatchGamingChannel7 жыл бұрын
What a great way to put it, Soaraak. It's really a tragedy for every character. Thank you! Good to see you again!
@pabloc88087 жыл бұрын
I hardly call it a tragedy; in the end, everybody dies. And I'm not talking about the game, I'm talking about life. We never really know when we die, the only thing we can know is that we are close to dying, be it because of an illness or old age, and that usually makes us miserable. The ending of Hotline Miami has everyone dying. Some died in gruesome, painful ways because they brought it upon themselves, namely the Fans and Jake. But Evan and Jacket, for example, died without knowing what hit them, painlessly, with no fear. Jacket had his closure so he was happy, and Evan was with his family (should you choose to pick up the phone) so he was happy. Manny Pardo was scared, paranoid. The Son was numb and aimless. They died as they lived, only it was in a flash and a blast instead of by some announced tragedy.

If people want to get into more of the intricacies, or "Whys", of the characters, they have the Character Bios to turn to which I hope can help answer some more of their questions. Now, this has probably been mentioned before and may be mentioned in the video, but a couple years ago I started playing this game while in college. One of the classes I took, was theater appreciation. We learned about theater production, style types and history. One thing in particular we learned that reminded me of this amazing game was the greek chorus. Particularly the three masked people who meet with jacket. They give subtle hints and comment on the events that have happened or will happen, much like a greek chorus would in a tragedy. This game is a modern greek tragedy in some ways. And the fact that this game reflects so much logic and a brilliant story arc, shows us how genius the creators are for the time they spent developing it.

Jacket's story was way more brutal and deep than i thought
@heilagr_04133 жыл бұрын
Trivia: *It is possible that Jacket's real first name is "Richard", since it is the name of the first mask received in the game (mailed to him personally by 50 Blessings), and it grants no special abilities. It is worth noting that most masks, such as Jake and Richter, are shown to be named after their original owners. *Jacket's family and his relationship with them is completely unknown. His parents are never mentioned or alluded to, we don't know if he was an only child or not, and he doesn't have any visible photos of them in his apartment. Given the lack of family photos in his home, it is possible Jacket is either estranged from his family, or moved away and isn't in regular contact with them. *On the Dennaton Games website, there is a picture of Jacket with the name "Fritz" embroidered onto his jacket. If not his surname, it could be the name on the jacket or a clothing brand, as there is no indication at all that the jacket originally belonged to him, nor do we know if he bought it new or not. *Jacket is the only playable character who doesn't have a single line of official dialogue in the games. He does talk over the phone to Beard in the outro to Casualties, but the game only expresses this by Beard regularly pausing and responding to whatever Jacket said. *Ironically, he is one of the only character who makes any vocal noise, he does it when vomiting. *Consequently, Jacket is also the only playable character without an unmasked dialogue sprite. *Canonically (e.g. in-game, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, official artwork) Jacket owns the Tony MaskRichard MaskAubrey Mask, and has used the Fireaxe, Baseball Bat, Pistol, Throwing Knives, Shotgun and/or Machine Gun, Double Barrel and Trophy. *Like Biker, Jacket is easily interpretable as a meta self insert of the player: taking the game's events fairly passively and silently going through the motions, putting much more effort into exploring a variety of violence implementation and mission completion rather than exploring the reasons behind what he's doing. Jacket is a gamer himself and regularly escapes into recreational activities to wind down from what he's just done, and these are associated with the player's high score screen. *Jacket has either two or three ex-girlfriends. He's being consoled on a break up by Beard in 1986, he has a stripped twin sized bed in his apartment in early 1989, and his relationship with his girlfriend is explicitly followed. The pairing of him next to Rachael Ward in Apocalypse and her role in Midnight Animal as his 1989 girlfriend could place Ward as his early 1989 ex. The Ambush intro in 1985 seems to imply a fling between Jacket and Alex, both being the only ones standing away from the bar smoking and ready to leave, the bar itself having a unisex bathroom. This is the only time Alex is shown smoking a cigarette, an animation otherwise restricted to Jacket. Alex also has an explicit interest in recreational marijuana, which fits with Jacket's psychedelic apartment theme "Deep Cover." *Jacket is referenced several times in the heist game Payday 2. He is shown at the end of the trailer, beating an unnamed Russian mobster to death with a baseball bat after rampaging through the building, several animal masks can be purchased for the Payday 2 heisters, and a DMC DeLorean is the getaway vehicle in the Hotline Miami heist on day 1. As of the Hotline Miami 2 Update, Jacket is now a playable character and is unlocked by purchasing the Digital Special Edition Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. He never directly speaks, instead playing pre-recorded messages from a tape player to communicate with teammates, though he can be heard panting heavily if he sprints for too long. Jacket comes equipped with a customized Cobray M-11/9 machine pistol named "Jacket's Piece" and a claw hammer named "Carpenter's Delight". His associated Perk Deck is called "The Sociopath", for obvious reasons; the perks "No Talk", "Tension", "Clean Hit", "Overdose", and "Showdown" in his deck are all named after Hotline Miami levels. Because the Payday and Hotline Miami universes seem to be mutually incompatible, Jacket's appearance is most likely non-canon, though given the existence of The Fans, it is also possible that the Jacket seen in Payday is a copycat pretending to be the real Jacket. However, it would be highly coincidental if a copycat shared all of Jacket's known physical attributes, including his blond hair. It is equally as possible that Payday 2 takes place in an alternative universe where the events of Hotline Miami 2 played out differently, and nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union never occurred at the end of 1991, and that Jacket either escaped from prison or was released at some point. It is hard to tell with his current model if Jacket displays any signs of having aged since 1989, though it is possible he's in his mid to late 40's or early 50's by then. However, all of this is speculation. *Jacket's signature varsity jacket is based on Axel Foley's outfit. *Jacket resembles Jasper Byrne, one of the music artists for the game. *In Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, his suit sprite reuses Jasper's sprite from the first game. *While in the game Jacket collects several masks, only Richard, Tony, and Aubrey are shown as evidence in his trial in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. However, this could be because these were the only three of his masks which were actually found by the police. *It is presumed that he canonically owns the Don Juan and Rasmus masks, as they are both seen in his dream, leaving no other conclusion as to how they are present in his mind. *Jacket easily has the highest body count out of any playable character in the series, in front of The Son and Richter. *Jacket's standing execution, where he rips out the throat of an enemy might be a reference to a scene from the movie Road House, where the protagonist, Dalton, kills one of the antagonists, Jimmy, by ripping out his trachea with his hand. *Jacket is the very last character shown to die in the entire series, being killed by a nuclear blast in his prison cell during the credits of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. *There are several similarities between Corey and Jacket, most notably both being messy, being very quiet, and wearing a signature varsity jacket of a distinct style, she was also is referred to as the "female version of Jacket" in the Artbook. *He's assumed to be ambidextrous, as evident by how he holds certain weapons and often switches between being left handed and right handed.

I am simply amazed at the amount of lore and timeline events that happened in the game that gave them the ability to make a sequel that lined up previous events that led to the events of Hotline Miami. You can come up with a premise for a prequel somewhat easily by attaching things to the original, but there's all these details in HM1 that are so interwoven that it absolutely had to be planned for HM2, because they setup this history of what happened prior to HM1 that doesn't exist anywhere in the game. I find it amazing because even if they had a lore setup with a rich history that had interconnecting events, it didn't seem like HM2 was even going to happen when HM1 came out. In the interviews with the developers, they talk about how they didn't think Hotline Miami 1 was going to even go anywhere. They could have had some sort of "bible" of all of the lore of the events that happened before and after the events of HM1, totally could be true. However, again, if they didn't even originally plan on doing a sequel, that's a hell of a lot of information to leave out of the original that would explain sooo much. Perhaps they were planning on making a comic or something similar to tie in, but then the popularity and critical reception to Hotline Miami blew up and gave them the chance to make a game around the rest of the lore? Or I'm probably talking out of my ass. Either way, amazing games, I love these videos that explain so much of the series. Much as a Hotline Miami 3 would be awesome, I think it shouldn't happen unless they separate it from everything in the first two games (minus the occasional nod), all of the story here has been explored enough. Anything further would just feel tacked on and too convoluted.

I personally like first more as it has better story (style of interwoven events with loose chronology doesn't work in Hotline Miami's style) and second one is just so much full of bullshit difficulty.
