My cuz called in need of an assist. I said, " have saws,,, will travel!!!" We ventured to the central (Willamette) valley for a little inland Fir fun.
As with all things in this world, had a slight mechanical "dys-phun-ction" with the mighty 088. I had the 2100 barred up with the Cannon 42"er already. So wasting no time, we put the hurt on the big fir.
This is the 1st tree of the day and in this location. As mentioned, getting the carb dialed in here as we live at ~ 2800' and this is at most 350' above sea level. Eventually, I did get her close to properly "carb-a -tooted" and we can see she is pulling the 42" quite well. A little bit of a stump patch out there around 100' mark so, and as always in a place like this, takin' my "saw-weet" time. The trees are just to valuable to torch them off haphazardly.
We heard cousin Gary expressing his concerns about hitting the house. Resultantly, I had this nice stick gunned a little right. Didn't wanna be yellin' FOUR!!! as she went down...
In the end we utilized the "meat" of this tree, didn't wreck anything, and lived to tell.
I'm currently available for custom saw modifications. Please shoot me an email if you are interested.

Hello. At the start of the day, the 088 glitched with a bad recoil assembly rope pulley interface. I had the "Iconic Relic" (2100 CD) ready to go. She stepped up to the plate and performed nicely - hitting a tight shot full of stumps. As always, the description furthers and qualifies. Thanks for watching.

I purchased the 3rd one that came to the central Oregon coast, from Glen Harmon, "Harmon Motors" in Toledo back in, I think it was '73. They didn't have falling dogs on them yet, (we put Stihl dogs on them). We loved them, because we had been running Macs and Stihls, cutting timber, and they really turned up and never broke down. I still have one hanging on the wall out in the garage. Husqvarna revolutionized the logging industry, they changed everything. I haven't started that old saw since '92, but it wouldn't surprise me, if I gassed it up, that it just might fire right up...

King Slew hi. Nice nostalgia. I wonder if the saw you are referring to is an 1100? My first 2100 came a bit later. It had a bad oiler. 3 days from the bottom of a yarder block it went to the shop one week. I was not overwhelmedly pleased. Never missed a beat after that though. The "CD" ignition system was an improvement "fir" sure. Seems like the 2 series Huskys were pretty bullet proof with a slight crack at high idle. Yuh never know. I've had to replace a lot of the rubber components on the few I have. Parts are getting SCARCE.... Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 Absolutely! It was an 1100! Like I said, they didn't have decent dogs on them and we used Stihl dogs, had been running Stihl for a while, but you had to wait for them to turn up (not like the Huskies, lots of torque) also, the handle bar on the first one I owned wasn't wrap around, Glen would weld an ear up on the off side. Plus, they were off and you couldn't use them to gun the tree. We improvised our own sights on them. By the time I bought my second one they had remedied most of those issues except for the sights...

Here in the UK we do not have indigenous conifers which reach such heights and very few of us ever have the opportunity to fell clear stemmed tall trees so I wonder if you would be so kind as to expand in word or video format a little about the causes of stem snap and the measures you take to mitigate it. Thank you for a wonderful video and kindest regards from Scotland.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 жыл бұрын
Longlowdog hi. Around 3/4 of the height from the stump most trees are bent back the worst due to wind drag on the limbs. They will hit with a lot greater force from that 3/4 distance up to the top depending upon the lay of the ground. Anyone that has spent time felling big tall fir knows that that worst place to land them is in the landing. Severe train wreck-age is what it looks like most of the time. Mitagation will be tree specific. Sometimes I've had to sacrifice a tree or two to save a weeks worth of timber when out in the bush, alone, all by myself, lol. Here I asked for a log to be placed perpendicular in a low spot. In the "It's Christmas!!! Hanging With Cuz Gary & Wrecking Things" video I broke that big fir in a similar type of lay to what we see here. I've had logs placed in the lay with my buddy Chris a number of times over the years also Some of those videos are on this channel as well. Thanks for watching.

Of course having the backup a few feet away in the pickup makes life a lot easier. I'm guessing that isn't always the case, especially in redwood stands.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 3 жыл бұрын
Jim hi. I know fallers, heard of fallers, and have used a couple of saws in the same strip myself. As Late as in the '00s. We cut some old growth units where I had a 42" on my 394 for the reach and a 32" on my 372XPW or 046 for chasing after or picking up a corner. The timber size of today doesn't really dictate the need for two saws. You can get away with a couple of bar lengths. One reason I went after power in saws 20 years ago. I know a faller that had to spoon a 42" on a 262xp to pick off a lone wolf in the bottom of a yarder block on time - no one knew it was there.... I've had a 42" on some of my 70/80cc saws but that is just crazy. Anti-vibe mounts beware... Redwood country is littered with old growth stumps. That, coupled with choppy ground sometimes make for an interesting day once and a while. Add in the fact the the "older" timers used the ridges in their attempt to save the trees and you have your lay polluted with old logs and chunks sometimes too. Especially in the Salmon Creek drainage. A faller is constantly having to be in weird positions, both falling & bucking, in Redwood country. There are a few videos on this channel that show this. So yah, nice to have saw "B" in the truck,,,, 2' away... Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 your welcome, the problem with selling a saw like that is average person does not know what it is, saw came from dealer with a 24" bar and it stayed on it, people would say I've got a bigger saw because it has a 28" bar I would try to explain that it was a 100cc saw, one of the best ever made, I've only been through mabe 12 chains, and saw is probably worth $800.00 or better ended up selling to guy I knew who was starting a stump grinding business and wanted a good stump saw he put a 36" bar on it when I saw him a few months later and said it was a beast.

Howdy, ever have trouble with different saw's sights/handles have different points of aim, or slop in the bar mount changing it? Thanks
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 ай бұрын
I have noticed it is hard to transition from saw to saw to saw. But it's mostly when stumping. The bias cut specifically. Generally speaking, the sights are 90° to the c/l of the bar on all saws. What differs is the handle bends, position, and distance from the pistol grip to front handle bar. A guy gets use to hand positioning on a particular saw. When changing to another, the "minds eye" aspect is off a little bit. So yes, I've noticed the handle bar orientation differential between saws. Mid sized Stihl saws & the upper Husqvarna saws have pretty consistent sized bar studs. 12mm & 9mm respectively. I have seem where the bar groove will be inconsistent though. Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 I like Jonsered “straight across” handles, as well as the full wraps for the older huskies that were the same. 7900 pronounced handle angle is nice when standing or walking but throws me off in the wood. I may try adapting an old husky wrap.

Lance hi. Yes in essence what truthseeker was saying. Expounding a bit more - It is a plumb line. I will check for side lean, either left or right from the shot if possible. If not, then I check at 180° to the shot. I will also check from as close to perpendicular to the shot as possible. I will do thst o. The uphill side of the tree. I'm looking for head or back lean - whether or not I'm wedging lol. As a suggestion, a guy should only plumb a tree from two sides. Blessings to all in your camp as well. Thanks for watching.

Beautiful timber... Perfect Humboldt... Right on the mark... And what a great sounding saw! That had to be the first saw ever produced that was capable of barking into the wood like that... Love a good barking saw! I'm not an experienced cutter, so I'm curious... How much farther do you think you could've went on your face cut before you'd start pinching your bar? Is that depth something you judge based solely on the 1/3 diameter rule of thumb, or do you factor in the lean, quality of the holding wood and wind?
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 Жыл бұрын
Agreed! I would suggest taking a look at this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4ube313a8d1prM It spells out how the undercut used here is an offshoot of a true Humboldt undercut. It seemed that this tree was hanging back a bit. Around the 9:15 time stamp I started putting pressure on the backcut. With this consideration it might have been a bit of a problem taking much more on the depth of the undercut. This is just wisking the surface here: I'll make an undercut as wide or narrow as the tree/shot/what I need to happen is required. I'll have the undercut open more on one side sometimes. I'll have them slanted sometimes. I'll use a snipe sometimes. Etc., etc. The wider the hinge, aka holding wood, the more control (generally) the faller has on the tree. In other words, the better the chance I will get the tree into the desired shot (generally). Keep in mind that there is no absolutes in falling timber imho. There are a boatload of generalities, also imho. What you ask on undercut depth wood take a book to clarify. Thanks for watching.

David hi. The "timber companies" are on a relatively short rotation. Plantation trees are becoming smaller as the mills gear up for high production on the mini trees of today. A lot of mills are not wanting bigger than 3' on the butt end sticks. Trees like this are around as some of the private land owners have not harvested, for whatever reason. Seems almost like a "size paradigm shift" to yesteryear. Kind of an interesting concept. Thanks for watching.
