The chequer plate on the bonnet is purely cosmetic. The old defender had flat, chequered areas either side of the bonnet that genuinely were designed for standing on. This is, as I understand it, merely a nod to the past in the styling, rather than anything functional.

It's a great place to set something down like a cup, phone etc for a few minutes without worrying about the paint scratching. :)

The Bonnet black plastic are the same size as your tires, so you can kind of gauge where your front tire is in relation to the bonnet. That’s what I figured out….check it out!

My D90 300 Tdi has aluminium chequer plates. Custom made. Very rugged. Can step/ stand on. Highly reccomended. I suppose the modern version can be stood on too. Well if it cracks, any competent local craftsman can quickly fabricate a replacement. My 10 cents worth of freedback 😂. Michael Moi, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Yes, snow. Headlight washers are really useful in the high country. Also the bonnet “step” pads are not real. Just a homage to the original. Otherwise, really informative thanks.
