Wow!! Amazing work! Very dynamic! I’m so impressed:) can I ask of you learned Houdini all by yourself or do you have any CG degree?

@victorinara thanks so much!!! 🥹 I have a design degree but no CG degree. So I learned Houdini completely online. There are some tutorial recommendations in my other replies here in the comment section. Good luck with learning it!!!

@@20percent.vision yes, noted! thanks so much for your reply:) also, wanted to ask if knowing of VEX was a necessity for you while creating these armpieces? Perhaps you know where a beginner artist could ask for a feedback?:)

Hey this is really cool! Any advice for a beginner who wants to learn Houdini for motion design (and similar stuff to what you created)?

Thanks so so much!!! Sure. In terms of Houdini I'd stick to the basics at first. Learning SOPs is the most important and you may stay with SOPs for at least 2 months only, I think. For the first months you can export alembics and import them in the DCC you're most comfortable with. That way you can skip learning rendering in Houdini for the first few months. When you feel save begin to render in Houdini. You could begin with the tutorial “Houdini Basics Tutorial 5+ Hours of Free Lessons” on KZbin by Rebelway. Then I'd jump into the tutorial series “Applied Houdini” by Steven Knipping. Steven explains everything so easily that you could even start with more complicated topics as FLIP or Pyro but I'd suggest to start with his Particles Series. That's the easiest way. Watch at least the first 2 tutorials of every series and you're quite good to go. As you asked for motion design I would follow along these tutorials (even though its vfx), take notes and then apply what you learned to personal projects. If you don't have any idea where to start simply try to get inspired of work you like. Design skills are essential in motion design so I'd highly recommend beginning with photography beside learning Houdini. The reason is that learning composition and lighting makes your image better than having the most technical setups... Hope it helps. :)

Get your head around attributes first to understand the power of houdini. Applied Houdini is very helpful but dated. great for the basics, but in my opinion, find a youtuber who has a patreon, Paul Esteves, Nick Medukha, timj. and learn just from that one person. The reason is because in houdini there is more than 1 way to do the same thing, and an endless amount of workflows. I found it easier getting taught by one person. then branching out from there when you understand the basics. If youre coming from C4D or Blender doing motion design, get MOPS and ODTools for houdini. they will save you a lot of time.

Great work! Can you please tell me what is the best source out there to learn houdini?

Hey Goswami, thanks so much!! I'm glad you like it! The best source is by far “Applied Houdini” by Steven Knipping. But I would suggest to do only one Houdini beginner tutorial before if you start out, for example “Houdini Basics Tutorial 5+ Hours of Free Lessons” on Rebelway's KZbin channel. Additionally I can highly recommend the free “20 days of vex” series (also called “Joy of Vex”) on tokeru.com.
