Thank you so much for the helpful tips! It's worth noting that Houdini isn't limited to VEX or VOPs one can create impressive projects without any coding involved. Indeed, the requirement of coding often deters many from learning Houdini.

Yes! This is a great point! You don't need to code to use Houdini.

Agreed! While back in 2014~ it was pretty much necessary to be a developer to achieve great things in houdini It's not anymore. HOWEVER, it's still MORE than recommended to learn vex and vops. You will save time, resources and your mental health the better you get in vex, vex&cops can do soooooo many things you couldn't even imagine. It literally will save you in so many situations .. You should not be afraid of them. Every houdini FX TD knows how to code, and if doing simulations is something you want to do as your job as an fxtd you definately need to get your coding skills up

Agreed, the most important step in learning houdini is to never give up 😅 You'll never look back once you learned it. I made my transition from cinema 4D to houdini 16 back in 2016 on the vfx studio I was working at that time and I'm so grateful for that. I had good people around me showing me things but you'll need that inner fire & passion to push through on learning it properly..

4:47 tip: set your default group name to $OS. Then when you name the actual node, it changes the group name too.

I did a quick introduction to Houdini to one of my friends, and we spent the first 45 minutes just discovering the ways we could transform an object from one position to the other, we found like 10 methods for that :) Then showed him how to keep tracking the attributes, and how to use them to manipulate color, position, particle velocity, life, etc. I think once the ui is somewhat clear, getting to know the attribute system is the cleverest way to start, because that's the base of everything

I also wish I knew this earlier lmao, definitely should've focused more on attributes a lot of unnecessary confusion, use type properties and start making hdas asap to get used to setting up menus/paramaters for yourself to really get the benefit out of houdini.

For beginners I definitely recommend picking up vex or vops as soon as you're comfortable with general Houdini tasks. Learning vex isnt as hard as learning a full programming language and knowing even a little opens so many doors. Also, it will force you to learn how the software works at a lower level. Im an idiot with no prior programming experience and I still managed to get the hang of it.

I agree, basic VEX is extremely helpful to know and the earlier you get into it the better

So is there any recommendation for tuts or courses? I tried youtube but it seems very scattered for me easily get overwhelmed.

@@SidharthGanguly if youre ready to pay then applied houdini is one of the bests, but not sure how beginner friendly they are, it's been too many years when I watched them the last time

When importing. For scale. Do not manually adjust. Different programs use different scales but its always mm cm or meter. That one looks to be millimetre so probably blender. Just type in enough zeros and a one. So 0.001 scale is the answer here.

I kindly request that you consider creating a tutorial on pyro fire soon, as it would be immensely beneficial for my show reel.
