If you have a pension and social security, they do a formula where they take 50% of 55% of your pension or your social security i Louisiana, they do a formula, whatever comes out the most, that's what you get most of the time. You only receive $100200 of social security. If you have 40 quarters, if you don't have 40 quarters, you, you don't get social security. If all of your work has been in the state and you never worked anywhere else, then you all to receive retirement. Hopefully, it's the minimum salary to live on. Other than that, you can apply for ssi. It's a such supplemental security income to come up to the minimum standard living

This reduction is called the “Windfall Elimination Provision” (WEP). It most commonly affects government work or work in other countries. I paid into social security for 13 years prior to taking a civil service job in the late 70's. Then in 1984, I believe, Reagan came up with the Windfall elimination provision. This penalized those people who would be receiving a civil service pension by cutting their social security . So I not only took a hefty cut in social security benefits, 85% of my social security that I receive are taxable. I hope this passes as this is way overdue.

This is about people that paid into social security and a pension. Social security payments are based on what you paid in, your top 35 years. If you paid into a pension for say 20 years and social security payments for 24 years, then when your payments are tabulated you would have 11 years where your contribution was 0. That is going to reduce your monthly stipend. That is reasonable. But they are double penalizing people, by now taking another portion , as much as 60%, of the already reduced amount.

If they didn't pay into social security why should they get a check? If they did work part time and pay a little into s.s. and they didn't make enough to qualify for a s.s. check that's too bad. I thought that's what their pensions were for! I started working late in life because of a divorce. My ex always wanted me home with the kids, so I didn't make a lot from the time I stated working til I retired so my benefits when I retired were less than $1,000 a month. I barely make over that now! Many seniors who live on S.S. alone will get a big cut when the money starts running out but these people will continue to get their pensions from the government. This is b.s.!

That's a neat story. What about those that worked two FULL TIME jobs for decades and contributed to both a pension and bi-weekly social security taxes? You're saying that even though they paid into both, they shouldn't get both. Look at it another way. Someone paid into social security but also contributed a portion of their paychecks to a 401k over the years. Because they have a 401k, should they have their 401k stolen from them? THAT'S what you're suggesting for those who contributed to both social security and a pension.

This act is not 'fair' for YOU. These people never paid into Social Security, but instead into a different pension plan. Now they get their pension AND Social Security? It was just reported that this will bankrupt Social Security one year sooner.

I paid into Social Security for 12 + years before I went to work in a school district. I worked 29 years for the school district before I retired. The district I worked for would only allow us to pay toward our pension. When I retired I was only able to draw about 1/3 of the amount of Social Security that I could draw if I was not drawing my pension. I do believe that anyone would be upset if they lost 2/3 of what they should be entitled to when they retire.

I think the reason that their SS payments are reduced is that during their employment, they are NOT paying FICA or Medicare because they pay into the alternate pension system INSTEAD of paying into Social Security. I experienced this during my State employment.

We will be writing a bill to address the fairness act. So they paid less than social security tax and now they're getting the same amount as us and didn't pay as much into social security. I'm sorry for these people but they kept more of their checks for 20 25, 30 years. It's not our fault they paid less. Now we want our fair share.

This needs to be explored more and the details made transparent for everyone. It may be true that some civil servants receiving both a Public pension and Social Security are receiving less than they would receive from Social Security alone. However, many teachers, firefighters, and police are making six figure Public pensions, and adding additional Social Security benefits on top of that isn’t fair. Private sector pensions have been phased out for all but a few labor organizations that fall under union contracts, but those negotiated contracts often have reduced wages and/or benefits as a trade-off for the pension. Regardless, Public sector employees have choices just like we all do, and one of the very favorable benefits to this type of work is lucrative pension benefits.
@kimm1572
@kimm1572 3 күн бұрын
What’s not fair about it? I paid $1600 per month into our pension fund for 20:years and prior to that I worked in the private sector paying into social security. Do you think our pensions are free? You also have a choice to work for the public sector if you want a pension. A lot of people would rather work in the private sector because they don’t want to work for the government for 20 to 30 years of their life in a stressful job in order to get a good pension. Also, your pension is based on your age, time in service, and how much you make when you retire. That is why the pension amount can be high, because we worked for the government for a long period of time compared with someone who works in the private sector who can hop to different jobs throughout their working years. I see it as very fair especially because we pay for our pensions.

I know for a fact that those “public employees pay into a pension plan” instead of paying SS tax or at least mostly into a pension plan and maybe some into SS tax. They make that choice fully knowing they will get no social security benefits or very little if they make the decision to pay into the pension plan instead of Social Security. I do not feel bad for them at all. This bill will give them double benefits. My mother is a retired postal worker. She paid into her pension plan instead of SS. When she retired at 20 years she was living on her pension until she started working full time again to help her survive. She worked another 25 years paying into SS. She now draws a pension and SS. Every one of those public employees could have done the same thing and would be able to draw both. This bill must be shut down and not get passed. I am a disabled vet that draws both VA compensation and SSDI. I payed into social security as a government employee without the option to pay into a pension plan instead of SS. If I were not given a VA rating I would not be able to survive on SSDI alone. I also know Vets that retired at 20 years that have to take other full time jobs after retirement because the can’t make ends meet on their military retirement.

It is not a givaway. This is about workers who paid into SS at another job and who earned a government pension seperately. Also, my government pension wasn’t free for me, I had 9% of my gross pay taken out to fund my government pension. I paid into SS for 16 years before starting at my government job. WEP reduces what I should be getting from SS by approximately 60%. I earned that SS, and my government pension, it is not a windfall to me or anyone else in this situation.

IF they paid into the system then they should get their payments as determined by the same criteria anyone else is subjected to. IF they were exempt from paying in, then no, they should not get any SS.

i have personally seen that myself people who are perfectly healthy working under the table getting disability. shameful but what do you expect the people in government are corrupt and don t obey their own laws why shoudl the citizen? that is the reasoning many have. i personally find it disgusting that governments are the very essence of what they accuse us of being greedy for wanting to get what we are owed or making alot of money to be rich and then taxing the heck out of it to prevent any wealth and passing it on to children without being taxed to death on it. when my dad died the gov took half of it for taxes. taxed on the taxes and taxed to death.
