I’m a first-time home buyer with no experience of renovations and I have no idea what I’m doing…how hard can it be? Watch my vlog of the House demolition stage…
To Do List: Remove doors | Strip wallpaper | Remove fitted furniture | Remove carpet | Remove damaged plaster | Remove damaged walls | Remove trim | Remove door frames

I started by stripping the “artistic” feature wall in the Living Room using the Zinsser Paper Tiger Scoring Tool. It pierces tiny holes into the wallpaper without marring the plaster beneath allowing the steam to penetrate more easily. The Zinsser Paper Tiger Scoring Tool is a little pricey but it would take much longer for the steam to work its way through the slightly glossy paper without it. It’s a boring any messy job but I couldn’t think of another way to do it. After a while the rooms get full of steam so the paper peels off with ease.
Next, I ripped out the hideous fitted furniture in the 2 double bedrooms which must have been from the 80s at least, possibly even the 70s. It was a hotchpotch of homemade melamine carcassing intertwined with preformed laminate and integrated plug sockets. I’m sure somebody was proud of it at some point… Whilst dismantling the wardrobe in the rear bedroom I found some of the electrical sockets were still live despite isolating the electrical system, turned out to be a faulty main switch. Shows how important it is to double check the power supply is off before touching any electrical!
With the rooms now empty I began to rip out all the old carpet. Dust mask or respirator was a must here, decades of debris littered the thick pile. I cut the carpet into 1 meter strips and rolled them up securing with duct tape to make it more manageable and to limit the amount of wasted space in the rubbish skip. I did the same with the underlay, some of which had been reduced to a fine powder.
Whilst stripping the wallpaper in the 2 double bedrooms I noticed the walls underneath the bay windows were soft. I accidentally damaged them when removing the skirting board. I decided to remove the drywall to fully inspect the structure and status of the insulation. Turns outs the was barely any structure and absolutely no insulation. It must have made for a cold night’s sleep in those rooms! I also removed the plaster around the windows ensure the damp hadn’t spread and so I could inspect a large crack above the window in the rear bedroom.
Finally, I removed all the doors, door frames and trim from the rooms. They had years of paint build up that would take hours to strip back. In the box bedroom I found a nail in the skirting board pierced through an electrical cable. Turned out most of the door frames were merely cut down floor boards, some were structurally supporting the surrounding walls and ceilings!

Great job renovating for the first time, you sure you have no idea what you're doing! You deserve more views, I'm an amateur trying to do little DIY things myself in a rental property, in an ideal world it would be awesome if you were nearby and I could pay you to help out and to learn from you.

Do you have a recommended list of tools for demo purposes? You seem to have the right stash of stuff to get it done smoothly.

Recip saw (long and short blades) and an SDS drill with rotostop. Pry bars are really useful and a claw hammer.

Where did you buy the tool belt?, looks really useful and helps you stay organised
@ShortWorx
@ShortWorx 3 жыл бұрын
It really does. It's a bunch of different holders mostly from Amazon, looped through a tool vest (to spread the weight). Drill holster, hammer loop, tape holder and a universal tool holder. Only problem is they're fixed to the belt whether you're using them or not. I've just upgraded to a ToughBuilt ClipTech tool belt system that enables mix and match holders, depending on the task you're doing.

Are you not worried about gas lines when cutting out the radiators?
@ShortWorx
@ShortWorx 2 жыл бұрын
There are no gas lines near the radiator. Only water pipes which I'd previously drained and released the pressure. The only thing to worry about was old rusty water.

Great vid. But please get rid of the 80’s music. It’s far too loud.

Thanks! I made these videos a while ago now. Cheesy music seemed to be the norm at the time. If I make any more videos I probably wouldn't bother adding music. It's a lot of hassle.
