I was in a house that was struck by lightning!!! The radio, lights and windows all simultaneously went off along with the outside flashes and BOOM! The thunder was instant and got quieter as it rolled away. Downpour that followed left a 2 foot deep torrent of water in the street. Most thrilling 1.5 hrs of my life, one tornado a few miles away. Fresno CA summer storms can be cool

The sound of this lightning is distinctive and beautiful , caused by horizontal strikes in the clouds, while vertical lightning has a different and more sharpness sound.

Many of these sound like they were *positive* strike, which are much more powerful than the average bolt hence why they produce a more intense shock wave.

Negative bolts can also produce a nice deep sound if they contain many return strokes. The bigger thumps that shake the ground tend to occur in the middle of the thunderclap rather than right at the beginning though. The loudest bomb-like positive bolts are hard to capture on video because they don't ever occur during the peak of a storm. I've also heard some very heavy startling concussive thunderclaps during very cold thunderstorms in the winter while I was living in Seattle. I believe it was snowing at the time!

I have an example of a negative strike with multiple returns producing a pretty good shock in my video called "Mountain Hail Storm with Extremely Loud Thunder". It was way louder in person than it sounds in the video though. The microphone volume was automatically adjusted down because the hail hitting the roof was already very loud, plus the windows were shut. It happens at 6 minutes in.

What's really freaky is to be in the presence of that kind of thunder and lightning only it's snowing so hard you can't see 10 ft past your window.. definitely is a strange thing and one I've only experienced twice in my 55 years..

Thunder snow is what they call that and it is something very dangerous for sure, something that is likely to happen with the Nor’Easters in the winter time.

They're so hard to get on camera because they never happen during the peak of an active storm. The best bet is probably to focus on a nearby radio tower while there are expansive anvil-crawlers moving overhead. Sometimes one will unexpectedly connect on a tower after dancing horizontally across the sky. Problem is the sound quality often isn't the best if you're in a car. You have to be very lucky to find public shelter with a view of a radio tower.

Believe me, the thunder is instant when you are near to the place it strikes....Was at hockey-training (the grass-hockey type, not ice-hockey :D) when a thunderstorm approached and lightning probably decided to strike a lamppost for lighting the field during the evening, and it was like a bomb went off at the moment we saw the flash, everyone had ringing ears afterwards.
