❁❁Today I'm looking for a home to buy (yes, BUY!!) in Queretaro, Mexico. Join me as I see 5 houses starting at $171,000 USD.
New here? Let me get you up to speed with my story....
I'm Maddie and I've been living in Mexico for almost 5 years. About a year ago, I went through a pretty messy (and unfortunately public) breakup after a 5.5-year relationship. Eventually, I decided it was best for me to sell my half of Tangerine Travels, the business I co-created with my ex, and move from Queretaro to a new city: Guadalajara.
I lived in Guadalajara for the past 5 months but quickly realized it's not the safest city for a solo female traveler like me. So in essence, for the past year I've been looking for my next long-term home base in Mexico.
Recently it occurred to me....maybe I should start looking for a house to BUY in Mexico instead of renting!
Of all the places I've been in Mexico, I felt the most comfortable in Queretaro so today, I've traveled back to the city I called home for 1 year to start looking at real estate to buy.
The houses I'm viewing today range from $171,000 - $223,000. I tried to see a variety of properties in Queretaro in various neighborhoods to get a better idea of how appealing or feasible it would be to buy a house. What do you think? Are they worth it?
Big thank you to Monica for helping me with my house hunting in Queretaro!

A heartfelt *THANK YOU* to everyone who sent me encouraging comments/DMs during my absence. I really appreciate you! It also means a lot to me that many people were concerned enough to check in periodically. 💛 Be sure to watch through the video to see my full explanation of why I took a break. Also....can I just say how EXCITED I am to be looking for a house to buy in Mexico?!? Ahhhh!!! 🤩🥰 *SOME ADDITIONAL EXPLANATIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO* 👇👇👇 1. After looking at these houses I realized that even though I want a big yard for a garden and future dog, they're almost all too big for me as a single person 2. For my next round of house hunting, I'd like to see options that are more budget-friendly and smaller 3. Nobody owns Queretaro and I have just as much a right to live here as anyone else 😉 4. Just because I mentioned spirit guides doesn't mean I'm a satan worshiper for heavens sake...I don't need saving or converting. 5. This isn't clickbait...I *am* looking to buy a house and I am exploring ALL my options, which means I haven't ruled out Mexico City or anywhere else in Mexico

Oh Maddie! I think that the artist house is REALLY your vibe, plus with the studio space there is REAL potential to expand the channel - a filming studio, workshops, interviews, extra party space! Plus the construction is beautifully done and finishes are beautifully thought out.

Maddie is great to hear you switch plans from CDMX back to Querétaro. Welcome back. I would recommend to check out Zibata and Zakia area. You'll need a car as well but these areas offers new developments with gated communities with even double security check points and lots of amenities. Also this areas are building like this community sense which are not that common in the rest of the city, so I would say is also a feature. Not even talk about that are new buildings, beautiful parks, shopping little malls with local vendors and also close to big commercial areas like Paseo Querétaro, and groceries shops as HEB, Walmart, La Comer, etc. Hope you can consider it. Will be wonderful to be your neighborhood lol!

On another note regarding your Spanish; my husband is a fluent Spanish speaker and he was listening to one of your videos and commented about how good your Spanish is, especially your pronunciations of the words. Thank you for all the content you share with us. I appreciate you and what you do. God Bless.

There is something about you that is so natural, believable and, in addition, speaks to a woman of substance! Start looking for old tubs or troughs to place out in that garden now. I seem to remember how much you like a good soaking tub. Outdoor tubs are AWESOME 😎 There won’t be any nasty chemicals such as the ones used in hot tubs so you can use the water in your garden. It’s also a great place to wash your new puppy. 💭 😃 I’m thinking ahead for you. I can actually SEE you entertaining and loving life in that artist house. I can’t wait to see which house you choose. Blessing you with good vibes sweet lady☺️

I love the brick designs you see in some ceilings of houses and buildings in Mexico. I’m not sure if it is common in other countries around the world, but I’ve only seen it in Mexico. It’s a gorgeous architectural style bringing the outside to the inside and adding texture and depth to interior spaces. I love it and want it in my future home.

That architecture element you saw, comes form the Spaniard past of Mexico and it has functional purposes related to the dissipation of hot air in order to keep the house as fresh as possible. Whatever the name is "bóveda" and is common in some region's of Mexico especially is the south center.

I adore the artist’s house! It has the most quality finishes and unique characteristics where the ones shown before were so bland and sterile, with too much unusable, unnecessary space - not a cozy vibe. The last house is nice as well, great for a family and definitely for doggies! 3 bedrooms seems like too much to take on as a single person but I like the studio space and maid quarters because those have potential to be money-making opportunities for you. Thank you for telling us about the aura app - I signed up using your discount offer! Muchas gracias!

Perfect timing Maddie! I'm a fellow Phoenician & Sun Devil, that retired early (Viva Gran Resignación!), exactly one year ago today! I'm in the "Should I stay or should I go phase" and have been following your travels for a couple of years now. Never been to Queretaro, nor Ajijic , but both are on the short list. While I've been to Mexico many times, it's always been coastal, and I've ruled that out for permanent residence. Anyhow, glad to get a real estate tour of Quertaro that's in my price range. About mid-way through, I was thinking, I wish she would do a similar tour in Ajijic, and Bob's your Uncle, you are!

Hi Maddie! I just returned from San Miguel de Allende last night where I bought an 1100 sq. Foot condo for 265,000 usd. I love it for single me! SMA is more expensive, and it’s a flat 15 minute walk to centro, brand new with high quality finishes. 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and 2 charming little patios off each bedroom, plus it’s on a quiet street and one of only 4 units set way back off the street. You enter by a beautiful gate that leads you down a path surrounded by bougainvillea, olive trees and other flowering plants until you reach a central courtyard. Honestly, I was enchanted as soon as I saw it! And no HOAs, yay! I have lived in many big houses before and trust me, as a single person, small and charming is the way to go. Good luck on your hunt and can’t wait to see what you end up with!

House 1 was just perfect, it’s modern, updated & spacious. #4 the artist home is so cute and quirky and had so much character, I really love it, it felt like a modern goth cabin & the outdoor workspace is perfect, I love it, I need it… the only flaw with the house is it’s kind of dark in some places like you mentioned. I have heard that too though the cartels are still around and wild so I wouldn't feel safe anywhere down there. Americans craving drugs have ruined that beautiful country. The demand will never end. They should legalize all drugs period. Did you see all that barbwire and the extra-security locks on the doors?

Hi Maddie ! You are strong, amazing, honest, adventuresome and lovely - all in one adorable bundle ! You are doing great even when you are in a funk 🙂 as happens when our batteries need a recharge. If I may I would like to "vote" on the Artist's Home because it is authentic to the area you are living in and has so many neat features and accents around every corner, nook and cranny. You will NEVER get tired of it either whereas all the other homes are a little too cookie-cutter and could be in Any Where's Ville. Therefore I am rooting for you to reconsider the Artist's Home and retour it as it is so very YOU in that it has personality plus !!! Stay well, happy and healthy and cheers to finding the home-of-your-heart. M.

Maddie, first of all, you are looking FABULOUS here. This makeup and hair is just perfectly right for the lovely you 🙏🌷 Live in the area you feel is your HOME, and if that area of Mexico is where you were wanting before your breakup; then go for it. Yes, no one owns that town👍 Maddie, may I suggest a Condo on the ground floor with a mini backyard for a future dog and in a gated community. I think you would prefer it. However, being on an upper level makes it harder for burglars to break-in!!! Go small with not a lot to keep up so you can travel & this will make you feel that your home doesn't "own you", which can happen with a big place to keep clean and constant yard-work.

House #3 seems to be the best. As a Californian, I'd want to know what the earthquake situation is there and if the stone is reinforced. But as long as the neighborhood is safe and it won't come crashing down on you in a quake, it's super videogenic in an authentic Mexican way. It will make a great home for your channel, with many different set possibilities. House #2 would probably be easier to live in, but #3 will lend itself to better videos. I'm sure you'll find other places -- and you should definitely look in the bet areas -- but after the four houses you saw in this video, I doubt you will find anything with the same kind of charm without paying a lot more. Happy hunting!

Hi Maddie, we met when you first came to Ajijic at the farmers market. After 5 years of being a renter here, I'm looking at mountain towns in Panama next year. Again as a renter. Because I like the freedom it gives me to move when ever I want. Rented 5 different places here. But I am looking for a fellow travel buddy/roomate because sharing the rent will make it easier to travel and save money. I didn't think I would be wanting leave Ajijic. Much less Mexico. But Panama offers some permanent visa benefits that I can't get here, plus having 2 other countries as a permanent resident can have its advantages. Plus direct flights to and from Guadalajara and Panama. If I came back to Mexico, I'd like to check out Queretaro. Thank you Maddie for sharing your house hunting experiences with us. Will always follow you no matter how often you post your videos. Wishing you Peace and love.

Good to see you back. 💓 I checked on your channel a couple times. Imo, I didn't really care for any of the houses. Too much house and not enough yard for me, though I'm an avid gardener and love growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. The layouts were weird and too close to other people's houses. Jmo. I'm sure you know Exactly what your looking for and I find it very Enjoyable watching you show the houses to us. Before retiring I used to be a real estate investor. 😀 Thank you for sharing Maddy.

It’s good to have you back!! If you’re interested you can find some great deals in the suburbs like Zakia or El Refugio. Yes, you’ll need a car to get to Centro but it’s a well developed area and since it’s not that close to Centro prices are reasonable, they are quiet and safe, houses are big and the residential areas have things like supermarket’s, restaurants and many businesses close by. With the money you save you can maybe get a small basic car just to get from point A to point B. That’s just an advice which I hope is useful for you :3
