The fact that she totally immersed herself into this character for a year and a half and spoke in an accent for nine of those months deserves an Oscar in itself. Very tough I imagine. Not many actors do this and it shows major commitment. I think she did a fantastic job.

Why would she need to speak with the accent - this is something I don’t understand. All the protagonists spoke with one another in Italian. Does she think they spoke in Italian with an accent? It is only logical that if this movie is about Italians, it should rather be in Italian or, if not possible, in usual English to substitute for Italian. Fake accent doesn’t make any sense. It would make sense, only if the movie was about American Italians… and even in that case I am sure they would use Italian to communicate between relatives at home and would speak in English with an accent only with people outside of their family circle. This accent feels like an attempt to compensate for a lack of acting experience. The character could have been built, enacted and made relatable without the engagement of awkward audio effects.

I watched and loved both performances. But "A Star Is Born" is a remake of a remake of a remake, hence widely despised for that alone. Plus of cause all the comparisons to previous versions, where lots of people may have been fans of one of the older ones with different actors and genres.

People need to stop thinking an Oscar is the ultimate award. If it ever was, it sure isn't now. Year after year, they "award" stupid populist dreck, while classics that will live forever just get ignored. Look at the long list of garbage that has won over the years, and you'll see just how MEANINGLESS an Academy Award has become. I stopped watching their boring excuse for a women's fashion show many years ago, when I realized I could predict with near-perfect accuracy what they would choose, based on who was currently popular in "Hollowood", which political statement they wanted to make, and which old trooper had probably just made his last movie. And if you look at the "acting" awards, the winner is nearly always someone doing an impersonation of a real person. That's not ACTING, it's mimicry.
