This is the second video youve done on the House of Payne ammo, and Ive personally not been impressed with either of the offerings theyve sent you. The velocity of their ammo wouldnt be so bad if it werent so varying, and as you well know Devil Dog, consistently means accuracy. I was however VERY impressed with the velocity of the 149 gr WWB ammo!! May look into picking up some of that as stop gap supplies. As always, thanks for your videos, content, and candor. You save a lot of good people time and hard earned money on what NOT to buy!! Well done!!

Not super relevant to this video but I just wanted to say as a point of praise that you're the only channel I've seen use a large variety of different ammo brands and types when reviewing firearms and also the only channel I've ever seen that always provides this information on the ammunition used. Most channels just say "I've got my xyz loaded with .308", which knowing how much of an impact changing ammo can have on performance really annoys me, especially since a lot of those channels do a lot of penetration testing videos (eg "can xyz random object stop abc") which would likely have far different and more interesting results if done properly with different ammo types
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 жыл бұрын
Heavier projectiles have more momentum, so it can definitely be helpful for penetration through something thick in length. Energy is more dependent on velocity due to the equation having velocity be squared, while momentum evenly considers both mass and velocity. It’s also why I prefer using heavy for caliber 5.56 rounds for my home defense AR-15. 75gr. BTHP or 77gr. SMK can do a lot of tissue damage due to expansion, tumbling and fragmentation, but will also retain enough momentum to reach minimum FBI gel test penetration standards, which often lighter weight hollow point rounds will not.
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 жыл бұрын
@Fraser Fir True, it's not just momentum. Penetration will also be affected by how large the surface area the force is being generated at, hence why a .270 Winchester will penetrate more than a .30-06 with similar momentum. It's also why a sharper knife cuts better and why those Xtreme Hunter/Defender rounds from Lehigh penetrate so well. But momentum definitely does play a role. That's why a heavier for grain 5.56 hollow point will penetrate to FBI standards while 55gr ones do not.
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 жыл бұрын
@Fraser Fir That's a monolithic, non-expanding projectile.

I'm assuming the rifle is a 1:12 twist standard weight (light) barrel? Looks like a 22.5" basic m1a (like mine), and the velocities seem to confirm at least the length. Only reason I mention it is because the slower twist rate barrels don't generally do as well accuracy-wise with the heavier ammo. My rifle did pretty poorly with the 168 FGMM, but shot sub moa with 155 amax. Match grade rifles in this caliber are typically 1:11 or 1:10 twist rate and usually have medium to heavy weight barrel profiles to better match the 168 and 175 gr rounds respectively.

Listening to the echos off the hillsides reminds me of my childhood hunting days in Coos County. My step dad gave me a bolt action .308 with a decent scope at 9 or 10 years old. Each year we sighted in our rifles which consisted of me shooting maybe 10 shots or slightly more a year and cleaning the rifle after each time it was shot including if it shot a deer or elk or bear. It was part of the ritual and not dreaded or loathed. And I eventually came to the conclusion that a rifle like that would easily outlast its owner or even several of them. Years later smelling the same gun oil and cleaner (Hoppes 9) still brings me right back. I have to admit and it may repulse some people but now that I am almost 50 and am just starting to get back into rifles again listening to people talk about shooting their guns and not cleaning after each shooting is like someone taking a movement and not wiping their behind (for lack of better words). So I will admit I still have alot to learn.

I can't even tell you how many times I have seen someone sighting in then 3 rounds in... Nothing on the paper. 20 shots later.... Still not on paper. I step in and look at the gun.... Filthy... Break out the bore brushes.... Quick clean... Run some patches till they don't look like aluminum foil. And poof magically back on paper and grouping. I'm convinced that there are ALOT of deer that get hit by cars instead of bullets because people don't clean their firearms.

Good to see the Mil-Surp ammo included. In my Brownell's BRN-10 the Mil-Surp is superb. I was also surprised at how consistent velocities were within brands. They seemed to be a lot tighter than in other ammo comparisons. 7.62x51 and .308 have always been my favorite round. Nice work, sir.

As someone with very budget limited range time and only 1 caliber of firearm to train on (9mm pistol and rifle) videos like these are great educational material to learn about other projectiles and how they function. Always feels like I'm auditing a master class watching this channel.

I just brought an airsoft pistol to practice at home. Already had a pellet rifle. It's not a perfect option but it will help with ammo being what it is ATM.

Suggestion: for any tests where consistency may be important (such as for long range rifle shooting) - crunching the Standard Deviation of the velocities, and putting that alongside the average velocity result is easy and informative.

I'd love to see those normal 9m monolithic hollow points on the meat target. The expansion petals look like they would do some insane damage, and would be interesting to see how much, if any, over penetration they would have.
@TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 2 жыл бұрын
They were specifically made to not over penetrate and there's lots of videos all over KZbin of the round severely underperforming.
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 жыл бұрын
Extremely widely expanding hollow points, from what I’ve usually seen, typically has a tendency to underpenetrate and not meet FBI gel standards. However, that doesn’t mean the round won’t be lethal, just that it won’t be lethal at all ranges, and if collateral damage is a major concern, it can definitely be a decent choice so long as you know you can land a frontal hit. It’ll be the same as using varmint loads for a home defense AR or birdshot for shotguns.
@darthkek1953
@darthkek1953 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with those expansion petals... but it needs more than 300-something foot pounds of energy. The concept works fantastically on shotgun slugs. Might work on an 10mm round. But 9mm is too weak for the concept.
@TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 2 жыл бұрын
@@gameragodzilla If the MHPs go through anything thicker than a t-shirt then they'll plug and vastly over penetrate each time, but if someone's wearing summer type clothing I think the round will do its job so long as it hits some meat first.

Swiss 7.5x55 "GP11" has a 168 grain projectile which has a good ballistic coefficient of the boat-tail projectile. It is conceivable that although initially somewhat slower at the muzzle (muzzle velocity 2560 fps) that this is still going well after a longer distance. I have had good results shooting military poppers at 500m (1600ft) with the K31 and GP11.

Based on the actions of your neighboring state, I have a suggested video - demonstrating the time difference in shooting with multiple 10-round magazines versus shooting with a single 15-round or 20-round magazine. Of course, that means a lot of Shasta bottles will be sacrificed in the demonstration. Maybe keep the camera back further so it doesn't get sprayed like usual. WA House votes to ban ‘high-capacity’ magazines, bill now heads to the governor "They argued that if magazines were smaller, a shooter would have to spend more time reloading, ideally limiting the number of injuries."

Lake City ammo would have been a more accurate comparison type ammo to the Payne ammo as it uses a 168 Gr BTHP. That is typically used in matches and used by military snipers. To really understand and do a thorough comparison we need to know the type of power being used in each of the participants. Further, a second M1A would also be need for the comparison. You can have 2 identical rifles using the same ammo from the same lot and obtain different result. As you know that’s why when competing, competitor will test various loads to find out what works best in THEIR rifle. In competition typically 168 Gr BTHP is what is used because it tens to be the most accurate out to 1000 yards. The Match King 168 BTHP is what I use in my loads. Thank you and your team for the time it takes putting these presentation together they have helpful and useful and very enjoyable Ricky from IBM, Ret

I shoot a M1A Scout which has the 18" barrel and the long eye relief scope in matches at my local range. Looking at my log book, I have chrono graph data for a few other types of ammo. Federal Premium Gold Medal 168 grain .308 Sierra Match King ammo: 20 round average was 2460fps. The slowest was 2402fps and the fastest was 2514fps. Remington Premier Match 175 grain .308 Match King bullets: 20 round average was 2488fps with low and high being 2446fps and 2563fps. 15 rounds of 149 grain 7.62x51 military surplus ammo averaged 2470fps with low and high of 2590fps and 2715fps. My rifle shoots the tightest group from the bench with the 168gr SMK. Just felt like sharing. It's been a long winter and I'm ready to get back out on the range.

Which scope do you have. I've been thinking about getting one for my Scout, even though the irons are nice on these. Have you ever looked into some sort of red dot?
@edj2022

@@sylviajones3355 I have a Leatherwood/Hi-Lux 2-7x32 scout scope. The reticle has a BDC for the 7.62X51 / .308 round. I've used it in matches for several years but during one match I was missing every shot. The next day I put the gun in a bench vice and long story short, I found the reticle was moving several clicks to the right after each shot. I sent it to the manufacturer and they replaced it with a new one. I have not mounted the new one yet. I have an AR-15 with a holographic reflex sight, but I decided to keep the M1A dressed with accessories that look correct for the time period that it was a US service rifle. So no fancy 3 point sling or red dot optics for this one.

My .308win reloads are 168gr target BTHP and 165gr SP hunting, they are both loaded to +/- 2700fps. They are not max loads but they are loaded to the best accuracy in my bolt rifle. I would say the House of Payne ammo is a bit on the low side. However if it is what you use and sights are set to the ammo it really does not matter.
