Well I guess I can finally retire from high score runs. It wasn't perfect but it's gonna be as good as it gets for awhile. Had an awesome personal best after Chapter 2, did okay enough to muscle through Chapter 3, and Hangedman finally decided to give me the points at the end. I had two runs prior to this today in the 107k range and didn't feel like going for another run but something inside of me told me to just do it, and so I did.
Score Breakdown:
Chapter 1: 22,420 Managed to sneak in a few more headshots than average, missed 4 headshots overall but still happy with the results.
Chapter 2: 55,860 I'm not even sure what happened this run because I've never pulled off a near 56k in my life. I'll have to rewatch the Hangedman battle because I think that's where the magic happened.
Chapter 3: 89,740 I thought I was gonna blow the run when I took 2 silly hits before the 2nd researcher but somehow I muscled through with nearly 90k by playing Hermit very precisely and carefully. Missed some shots at the end but I'm not going to complain.
Final: 111,120 It finally happened, and I skipped 110k entirely. I managed 21,380 in the final chapter, which is well within my average, to earn the only recorded 111k on original hardware.
Final thoughts:
First off, I just want to say thanks to everyone who has supported me with everything that I do HotD related; I couldn't have reached this far without everyone. The list of people is long so I don't want to write everyone's names just so that I don't miss anyone and making them feel left out.
Second, to think that it took a couple decades to finally reach this seems mind blowing but I think I can say that I'll retire from further score runs until someone beats it on original hardware with a lightgun and with a full video. I know it can be done because my run was far from perfect.
Third, I'm glad that All Amusement Fun Center over in Burbank, CA has kept their machine in prestine shape, props to the owner Jim for adjusting the monitor. I'm sure I could've done it on my home setup but it feels just that much better when doing on a public machine. For one, it shows that I didn't cheat in any way and second, it's a way to flex your scores a bit. So in order to reach 10th place on that machine you'll need to score more than 107,600 which is already higher than Ottis Pittman's iconic score of 107,300 from many years ago.
Lastly, I know this isn't the world record as we found an old Japanese archived website that showed a bunch of Japanese players that has also reached 110k+ scores. Unfortunately, those scores cannot be verified as there's no video evidence. I would've loved to see some of their runs and how they approached each chapter but I'm not even sure how to reach out to those players as the scores were from the late 90's. Everyone in recent times seems to follow my guides that I posted back in Jun 2003/Feb 2004 and my more recent guide as of Feb 2020. But those guides are now out of date since I take a different route in Chapter 3 and approach Hangedman a bit differently. I still have $9 left on my game card for All Amusement Fun Center so I think I'll play a few more games to see if I can top this but I wouldn't count on it. Today was a good day, a very good day.
