Hugh is the son of Saera Targaryen-a aunt of Viserys- who was caught with having relations with 3 close male companions. She proposed to her father Jaeharys I that she’d marry all three of them like Maegor did with his wives-which was exactly the wrong button to push with the king since Maegor murdered two of his brothers. After this and after she tried to steal a dragon he killed one of her lovers in a duel while forcing her to watch then tried to send her to become a silent sister (which was mentioned as likely being an empty threat). She escaped and fled to Essos and may still be alive. I’m sure if she heard she’d be laughing hysterically at one of her sons claiming her father’s dragon

To give a brief bit of history without any spoilers, Jaehaerys Targaryen and Alysanne Targaryen were siblings and were king/queen for a long ass time. They also had way too many kids which was likely to end in some sort of sibling war. Some of their kids that have relevance in HotD are as follows: Aemon Targaryen married Jocelyn Barathion and she birthed Rhaenys - The Queen Who Never Was. She was the first grandchild of Jaehaerys. Aemon wasn't his first son but the first to actually grow up and have a kid of his own which is why some people believe she should have been queen since the crown was to pass to Aemon initially. Aemon was killed while Rhaenys was pregnant with Laena. Baelon Targaryen and Alyssa Targaryen (Younger siblings) married and had Viserys and Daemon. Baelon was next in line after Aemon's death but died essentially from appendicitis before his father, Jaehaerys, died which is why Viserys got the crown. Daella Targaryen married Rodrik Arryn and they had Aemma Arryn, Viserys's first wife who died during childbirth in episode 1 of HotD. Daella herself died from childbirth, I can't remember if it was directly from childbirth but I'm sure it was related even if months later. Saera Targaryen was a troublemaker and slept around a lot. She eventually worked in a brothel across the narrow sea due to being abandoned by her parents. It's her that I'm sure they're referring to when Hugh talks about his mother. The 2 Dragons at the end, Vermithor and Silverwing, were King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne's dragon's respectively. They have a long ass history together (Nearly 100 years at this point) and are likely the 2 dragons that have the closest bond to one another, essentially lovers as Jaehaerys and Alysanne were to each other. Before Jaehaerys died there was an important council meeting deciding how the rules of inheritance and successions should work which boiled down to them deciding that the crown can't pass to a female or her kids while a male relative still lives. Viserys kind of overruled this when it acknowledged Rhaenyra as his successor despite a younger male sibling being born. By the way, Silverwing loves human interaction and she tends to get lonely more than other dragons without human companionship. Silverwing is a sweetie.

@@thatlonewolfguy2878 When they introduced Ulf and I saw the way he was portrayed as a boisterous, friendly, if slightly bumbling and outgoing individual, I knew it was going to fit with Silverwing's friendly and playful temperament. She has a young dragon's nature, as if she never outgrew the desire to play with others present in dragons when they are small, and since Targaryeans claiming a dragon is treated so seriously, approached as a holy event, and ceremoniously, I felt that possibly, Silverwing shunned the attempts to claim her BECAUSE they were so serious. She just wants to goof off and play, and here come these oh so serious humans with their silly ceremonies and chanting, and all she wants is someone that entertains her with fun and silliness. Targaryeans could really do with at least keeping a record of their dragon's personalities, likes and dislikes, stuff like that, to better match riders. I mean, the first flight with Ulf was straight to King's Landing to antagonize stuffy, mean old Vhagar and then scoot back to safety at Dragonstone. Just like a little kid to run over and stick their tongue out at a crotchety old person and run away giggling.

Can you actually picture Vhagar killing multiple dragons one by one and surviving? Including Vermithor? I can't picture it. At best Vhagar kills two or three, dies, and the blacks still have dragons. They still have more than enough firepower, but obviously things will happen before they attack KL.

@patrickwaldeck6681 syrax has a much deeper bond with Rhaenyra. Remember when she was birthing last season finale. Plus she calms vermithor and seems to be able to sense that the dragon understands he needs to pick a rider. Perhaps sea smoke yearns for such a bond. Remember he was restless all season. He's picked the closest family to his old rider he could have found.

I think what changed between the Conquest, when Visenya was alive, and now is the Targaryens being influenced by the local Andal cultures (who are very patriarchal) and several generations of peace and prosperity. Visenya was a warrior Queen (and Vhagar's former rider) who fought alongside Aegon the Conqueror and so was expected to fight, but she was also known and is remembered for being very brutal, her son Maegor the Cruel, who usurped the throne, was a likewise a brutal tyrant that would make Aemond or Tywin blush. So Jace saying it was a long time ago is saying it was a very different era, and that Visenya isn't as well loved as Aegon or Rhaenys (Aegon's other sister wife and the namesake of our Rhaenys and Rhaenyra). Also, it was a joy to watch Oscar outplay Daemon. Daemon isn't popular with the Riverlords, and only Willem has pledged himself to Daemon personally, and so getting Daemon to execute Willem himself alienates the Blackwoods from Daemon while solidifying the rest of the lords under Oscar. Jace's position is understandable, Targaryens only hold power because they have dragons, and his position is questioned because he lacks the Targaryen looks, and he can only contest this due to having a dragon of his own. But now they're handing out dragons to a bunch of bastards, some of whom will look more Targaryen than he does, and expect them, or their children, to remain loyal and not claim power for themselves in the event they're victorious. This move may end this war but could also sow the seeds to an even worse one down the line.

Slight correction about bastard names - most smallfolk don't have last names at all, even bastard names. If they need a qualifier, it'll either be something like "of Hull" (Addam and Alyn's "last name") or it'll be a nickname. Bastard names are for highborn bastards. So Jon is Jon Snow, and Alys is Alys Rivers, but bastards of low birth don't get bastard names. If Corlys wants Alyn or Addam to be legitimized they would be known as Velaryon.
