House of the Dragon Episode 4 breakdown. In-depth recap & review of Season 1 ep. 4 “King of the Narrow Sea” with the ending explained. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series is here and the fourth episode delivered some big answers. Episode 4 jumped ahead 1 more year and princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) has set out to find a match for marriage. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) has returned to King’s Landing and that makes King Viserys (Paddy Considine) happy at first, but his brother’s chaotic nature soon causes problems.
There is a nice contrast to Queen’s Alicent (Emily Carey) and Rhaenyra’s situations. Both are in positions of unimaginable privilege compared to the small folk, but both still lack real autonomy because they’re women. They still appear to be allies, but when word gets back that the princess was in a brothel with her uncle things become stressed. In reality Rhaenyra entered into an intimate relationship with her personal protector from the Kingsguard Criston Cole.
This video doesn’t contain any book spoilers that will reveal future events that have happened on screen.
Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) time as Hand of the King comes to an end. In episode 4 Viserys relieves him of duty because he thinks he cares more about putting his grandson on the throne rather than giving the king sound advice.
Episode 104: “King of the Narrow Sea”
Directed by Clare Kilner
Written by Ira Parker
Original Air Date September 11, 2022
Official Synopsis: After conquering all but two of the islands, Daemon declared himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, being crowned by Corlys the Sea Snake.

I didn’t mention it in the video since it was mostly due to people moving around, but it does appear that we jumped ahead another year. That would conveniently make Rhaenyra and Alicent 18 if you were wondering. I thought there was some really great stuff going on here. It was great to see Storm’s End and all the different families who sent people to meet with Rhaenyra, and it was super fun to see Samuel Blackwood defend his honor. I thought it was smart how what actually happened on the night the princess brought Criston into her room made all the different accounts make sense, and it’s got me excited to see where they go next. Let me know what you think.

This was the best episode of the series so far for me. I also like the way they tied in those book elements/rumors surrounding Rhaenyra. It was a perfect fit. I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought there was a hint of Viserys accusing Otto of Baelon's death. It was good to see Viserys show some backbone, even if it's too late in the game.

I thought the interesting thing at the end of the episode was when the "abortion" draught was brought in for Rheanyra to drink. It put her in a huge pickle. If she drinks it, she is admitting to having relations with Daemon, even though she did not. However, if she does not drink it, she runs the risk of being pregnant with her supposedly celibate white cloak guard's child.

Maybe she can put it away to use later if she decides it's necessary and wait to see if she is pregnant and able to pass Criston's baby off as her future husband's son. It sounded like Viserys wanted to marry her off to Leaonor (? - not sure I'm spelling it correctly) as soon as possible.

Since Westeros isn't like the greeks or any country those old generations i guess Celibacy is optional law wise. Otto made a mistake by delivering the information to the king himself. Someone like a littlefinger or Varys would’ve delivered the information to the king thru someone else, therefore shielding themselves from his wrath. At first I thought Mysaria was Otto’s mole, but that’s out of the water now after the boy gave her the reward. Loved this episode and the schemes going on. As a non-book reader I get the impression that this is "the point of no return" for Alicent and Rhaenyra's friendship. It was never more "repaired" as it was in this moment when the expressed remorse of being apart for so long, making it more tragic that the circumstances at this moment stand to fire them off in completely different directions because of everything that just happened.

I just really loved all the juxtapositions between Rhaenyra's joyriding vs Alicent's gloomy life and why she's so envious of that freedom, an envy can and does turn into hatred and resentment. And at the same time, we are finally seeing the type of monarch Rhaenyra will become and she is much more like Daemon - so far, she's proven short-sighted, reckless, emotional and spoiled.

Pete - great recap as always. You are the S tier sir. At this point I think Martin is actually setting up the source novel not just a commentary on the unreliability of historical accounts but as a treatise on the nature of adaptations and fan criticisms of said adaptations, almost a "the book and the adaptation are always separate but always connected" - ultimately setting up for the divergent stories of TWOW (fingers crossed). He is a 4D chess kind of guy - and I could see it.

Great episode. It very much triangulated the conflict while also showing us that all of these characters are kind of insufferable and mostly unlikeable. There is no direction trying to pull us towards finding one character more favorable than the other. There’s no consistent bias and all players are acting rationally according to their goals without being so over the top that the subtle nuance is lost that provides greater contrast in really tense scenes.

Thanks. One of the biggest problems here - is that we all KNOW what's going to happen. We may not know the details but we do know the larger story they fit into. It is sad though - watching these people - knowing what's going to happen. As to the King's brother wanting to marry his niece - given their family history - this would not be all that unacceptable. One thing her Uncle may have been doing here - was testing to see how receptive she would be to him. She was receptive - so he broaches the idea to his brother. If she had not been receptive - he would have had the option to abandon the idea before he mentioned it to his brother. .

I know that may be annoying for non-book readers, but it's equally annoying for book readers not to be able to comment. HI Pete, I became a big fan your reviews from "The Expanse". Maybe the nicest treat if it comes to a young man of honor becoming a notable Banner Man was Samuel Blackwood swearing on his life to defend the Princess. Though he is still a boy, the scene ends with him then running the disparaging Amos Bracken through with his big (for him) sword, obviously killing the jerk. Such a cute and delightful resolution! And making Rheanyra decide she had had enough of the zoo. Wow! The kids can kill in this world. And make decisions that will send others to die, See Lyanna Mormont. Also, I'm liking that as usual with GRRM, he doesn't make ideal Mary Sues that solve all writers difficulty in concluding a scene. (Arya Stark of course became a colossal Mary Sue when bad writing replaced GRRM. Rhaenyra is shown conniving, self-centered, trampy, and of course lying on the very grave of her dead mother. Daemon took his niece, who is sheltered, naive, and never left the castle to run in the streets. Their first stop? To listen to the "small folk" say that they don't want her as queen. I think he was hoping that it would discourage her. Then, he took her to a brothel to try to seduce her in public, disgrace her and if necessary, marry her to get closer to the throne. If he wanted to bed her, they have a castle full of beds. Why did he remove her disguise? He wanted to make sure that everyone got a good look at her committing treason. Too bad he was impotent and wasn't up for the challenge. Sir Crispin was tho! 🍆🤣 The entire episode was his play to get closer to the throne and how in these mens' eyes, these women are pawns. Agreed. This has strong Handmaid's Tale vibes. I still wanna root for Rhae even though she's made some god-awful decisions and often acts like a spoiled, rich lil brat. Daemon is a demon, tho. @@Stress-Free-K Daemon wasn't looking to disgrace her. He came to KL to marry her and wanted to be seen with her. His plans, like the one with the Crabfeeder, are reckless. He does tend to yield to her though, like at Dragonstone with the egg and then in the brothel when he decided not to go through with it. Viserys has said that his daughter and Daemon are a lot alike. The difference though is Daemon never learns from his mistakes. Rhaenyra is starting to figure out how to use her influence. She traded the marriage to Laenor for the removal of Otto.

I dont know about her agency when she was about to bang her uncle just because he said so. It was he who put it into her head that she could take whatever she wants and she marched right back to the Red Keep and did just that. All is forgotten about the power Criston told her she had and which she used to grant him status and honour when she then turns around and takes it away. What if Daemon didn't expect Rhaenyra to be so into it? What if that surprised him and what if he was surprised about his own feelings? People are saying his impotence stopped him but what if he was shocked by his desire for his niece and asking the King to marry her was purely on impulse? I don't know if to him, the marriage idea is a solution to both her problem (being a female heir), and his, or if it's unexpected desire, or both.

He took a young teenager & totally manipulated her out of anger & self-interest. As her older uncle he should instinctually seek to protect her vs humiliate & defile her in public. Great breakdown video, but after episode 3, I found this (yes, there was character development) episode 4 to be the weakest of the season for 1 BIG reason. The show spent 25-30% of its time on a damn love/sex scene. It was cringe and drawn out. The rest of it was good to very good. Looking forward to episode 5 to get back on its horse. Pun intended.

The Kings sores are multiplying across his back. So, it isn’t just the loss of two fingers, but there is something spreading across his body. No reference to them in this episode, but poor Alicent has to submit to sex w/an older man with sores all over his aging body. Clearly, not sexy nor fun.

I'm with you on the direction of this episode as well as the first episode. I like these episodes with intrigue. This thing is starting to feel like a rollercoaster ride. From someone that's never read the books, I didn't care much for Alicent, even thought she wasn't going to be a big part of the series. Then I kinda didn't like her to now I feel sorry for her and am starting to root for her, whereas I started out the show rooting for Rhaenyra by default because she's a dragon. I thought she was going to be another Dany but it doesn't seem that way. Seems like she's very careless and I think that will play a role in the future.

Most importantly I wonder if Otto is seriously misunderstood? Otto is a second son with no inheritance, being at the King's side gave him opportunity and made sense to pair Alicent off with the most eligible widower in Westeros, thus giving his daughter the wealth and security he could not and ensuring his direct bloodline a prosperous future and status to equal his brother - Plus it meant Otto could prevent a conniving woman and her family getting to the King and taking advantage of his loneness and pliability and potentially destroying HOTD and the bringing the demise of Otto and other nobles - This way Otto knows Alicent will be obedient, kind and gentle with the sensitive King and through his daughter he would know absolutely everything, as Viserys needs someone keeping an eye on things for him as he can be a few steps behind - The telling point is that it was 'Not Until' Otto's elder brother Hobert told him to push for his grandson to be heir that Otto did it - prior to that Otto was laughing that Aegon was only a baby eating porridge with his hands and the King had no intention of making his son heir but Otto's brother told him to change the King's mind - up until then Otto was comfortable with the King's choice of Rhaenyra as heir as it blocked Daemon taking the throne - Otto even volunteered to go to Dragnstone instead of the King as it was too dangerous and Otto really could have been killed by Daemon, the risk was real but he did it to protect the King - Also, he wasn't seeking out scandal about Rhaenyra as she had never been compromised before so why would he be looking for something that isn't there, yes she was seen by the house staff sneaking in and out but only because they report on all coming and goings to Otto for obvious reasons such as treachery in the household and the King's safety - also the child sent by white worm was unexpected caller to him - So, I think Otto genuinely did have the King's back but he listened to his brother and went a step too far and made Viserys question his loyalty, while Rhaenyra needed the spy removed quickly before even more of her antics were discovered. I feel sorry for Otto BUT I do think he will now become truly Machiavellian as his position and fortunes have now changed for the worse. Or I have I got it really wrong, does the book have him as a baddy all along?

Though the thought was not expressed as some may like, I agree that if you don't want spoilers, you might need to avoid comments sections. Unless the video-makers police the comments for spoilers (which would take an immense amount of time for some content creators), there's no way to keep spoilers out. Moon Tea - why? Why would Viserys want to abort, as he thinks, the child of 2 Targaryens?
@serenas.3842
@serenas.3842 Жыл бұрын
Because even if it would be the kid of two Targaryens, the most important thing for a woman in this world is being a virgin at their wedding. That is set up very clearly. We see that with Lysa Tully: she got pregnant by Petyr at age 15, I think. After her abortion the only Lord who wanted to marry her was Lord Arryn who was old enough to be her grandfather. And Lord Arryn only wanted her because she proofed that she is fertile and he was in desperate need of an heir after Aerys II murdered the first one and the battle of bell killed the second. If Rhaenyra is "spoiled" before her wedding, most Lords wouldn't marry her anymore - but Rhaenyra needs a strong house to marry or she can't hold the throne. So no Targaryen Bastard for Rhaenyra.

They hired the older 2 actresses first. Just because the audience is attached to the younger versions does not mean it was "stupid". Alicent and Rhaenyra will change dramatically. That's part of the point of having two different sets of performers. Additionally, the two younger versions are much too young to play the older versions - and that's where the meat of this story lies - with the older versions. Maybe give it a real chance before you judge something you haven't seen yet?
