I love that they showed us the kids were not in complete control of their dragons. It makes perfect sense -they are children and these are creatures with immense power and their own will. It confirms what we logically know to be true; the dragons are only as controlled as they allow themselves to be. Btw, The scene with Luke & Arrax was heartbreaking and horrific. It was also the best CGI of the show thus far (some of it has been middling, at best).

I loved the Aemond change, and it's a really interesting point about not revealing to others that he can't control his dragon. I hadn't thought about that, and it makes the dilemma even more intriguing. Also, nice to hear you highlight the kid who played Luke. The ending just doesn't hit the same if he's not very good. Thankfully, he was great. It makes me wish we got more of him in earlier episodes.

Even with the weaker episodes and scenes, I think this series more than made up for the disastrous ending of GoT, in that it got the fandom engaged and excited again. I could see four seasons if they'd known in advance of season one that they would get them, but given the time jumps in season one, I don't see how they'll squeeze three more seasons out of this story. At any rate, I'm looking forward to being along for the ride. That wait until 2024 is gonna be brutal.

I really liked the season, as a whole. The biggest issue I had was that Raenyra should have been better supported by her father. After announcing her as his heir, he should have kept her closer to himself, maybe had her as Hand. He should have been constantly promoting her as the future Queen of the realm so that his people would have seen her as the natural heir to the throne. I also don't understand why he brought Alicent's father back as Hand of the King. Raenyra, going to live at Dragon's End, so far from the court was very unwise, though understandable. Anyway, I liked the show very much and can't wait till season 2.

Nice review. I was surprised with the direction they took with Aemond. And while he's still responsible for the death of Lucerys, it adds more depth to his character with the path they took. It also makes the entire story even more tragic. As a book reader I've enjoyed the twists like this they've put in. Some people want it to be verbatim to Fire and Blood, but we don't have a reliable narrator there. While I thought there were some pacing issues, primarily around episode 6 which I think was the worst of the ten, I think it was a very good season overall.

People act like Daemon physically assaulting Rhaenyra is out of character are in denial, I think. We know he revels in violence and danger, and uses physical force as a problem solving tool. We know he has an inferiority complex towards his older brother, and a lifelong attraction towards his wife and niece. He is very powerful and yet always been powerless to get the validation from his family he craved most. When Rhaenyra inadvertently revealed that her motivation to restrain his warlike posture was the prophecy that Viserys told her (ASOIAF), Daemon was shaken. He was already furious about the usurpation. He was acting with total conviction and as good a military commander as one could ask for, but with no sense of subtlety. Finding out that the reason Rhaenyra was avoiding escalation was some apocryphal, prophetic dream that his older brother believed in, makes him utterly furious. I don't think he chokes her out of a desire to threaten her into compliance. I think he's in a genuine rage because of how powerless he feels. Perhaps it could have been a better storytelling choice to have him backhand her, or some other form of more fiery, less sadistic/manipulative violence.

I thought the season was really well done - the acting, dialogue, cinematography, sets, costumes - it all worked to support a coherent story. There are naturally changes and choices made with any book adaptation, and I think those mostly served the story and made sense. I'm definitely looking forward to S2. The show creator (who created the show with Martin) says the show IS the proof of what happened. See it as us getting a view of the events as if we were truly there. While, he said, the books are what happened through the eyes of others which can be misinterpreted, biased, manipulated by the storyteller. An example would be our history books that are obviously written in a way to support a certain faction over the other. With that said, the creator said we should see the show as the “actual” in what happened. Now, we have the responsibility to retell the story… but as we see it adding our own biases. I hope this makes sense to everyone. We are watching history as it happened rather than interpreted through the eyes of a 3rd party. Also, remember Marin is a producer of the show. He is the “source.” No material is needed. We have the actual brain of the creator. ☺️ We lucked out!

They’re just “tamed” beasts. They’re the equivalent of keeping a tiger, wolf or an ape as a pet. The dragon lords of old and many Targaryens deceived themselves into believing that they must be half dragon because of their mutually beneficial relationship seems to keep the dragons docile and answerable to them. But at the end of the day, these are wild beast with minds and instincts of their own. You can even see this with domesticated pets. If one feels threatened enough by another, even if that other be several times it’s size, it’s a flip of the coin as to whether it will run away and hide or lash out. Usually, they will lash out. I've just realized that Luke's dragon attacked Aemond's dragon's left cheek, just like Luke attacked Aemond. Nice episode, but it doesn't beat ep. 8.

Enjoyable season for sure, I was thoroughly entertained. I disagree with how Daemon, Rhaenyra, and Rhaenys were portrayed at times however I understand that show characters and book characters can and more often than not, will be different. Thanks for the great breakdowns and reviews.

I was hesitant when I clicked this review because so much of the discussion around Hot D has been kinda... distressingly unreasonable and just insane, but I'm glad I did. Not only was this a great discussion of the show itself, you did a great job discussing the themes, too. I'll be back to your videos for sure!

This was a superb season and thankfully GRRM was 1000% engaged! Great indepth analysis as usual with any of your recaps no matter the show, someone had read the books....😉 As far as redeeming GOT series finale, this, all of this is already in the books people! GOT has yet to have that, this entire Targaryen house, family is far more interesting, because of the Dragons, well yea!! Most of us know how this turns up, from the book, so no surprises there but will be pleasant to watch on how it is played out on the series, thanks for the great work and keep it up!!

I love that this show is differentiating itself from GoT by making ALL the characters very morally ambiguous. I know a lot of fans are "taking sides" but I think you people who do that are missing the point and not realizing that GRRM is trying to take you even farther than he did in GoT. That's not to say this is superior to GoT. Just a different approach. Part of what made GoT so great was starting out basically hating characters and then having it completely flip. Or the other way around. That was brilliant. But if they did that again here it would be repetitive. I think that the reason some people are finding this series a little harder to get into is precisely because no single character has been really "likeable". No Arya or Jon or Tyrian. But that is what is going to make this series stand the test of time. In 20 years people will look back on this and realize what a brilliant choice it was to have it be so murky.

Daemon HATES the idea of prophecy, fate, and legends. He is on this earth to form his own fate, not to be willed by the Gods. If you rewatch S1, he protests strongly every time prophecy is brought up.

I see an interesting parallel between HOTD and Andor. Only reversed. Andor is about a group of people fighting a system of which we know will prevail, where HOTD is about a group of people trying to fix/save a system of which we know will collapse. The difference is: The people in HOTD are interconnected. They dance around each other, going from foes to allies and back again. All while wearing a dagger behind their backs, willing to strike at any moment if need be. That's what makes this show more compelling although we already know the ultimate fate of both systems (the dynasty and the Empire). I love Andor lots because they also flesh out characters. But it's too black and white (as SW is, whereas HOTD/GoT are very machiavellian wich also differentiates them from LOTR which is also very b/w, due to Tolkiens strong christian faith). But the two factions in Andor do not really know each other. Some have suspicions, but they both kinda tap in the dark. That's why it's hard for Andor to garner as much tensions and thus suspense as HOTD has. But maybe that's not all that bad. Andor will only get two seasons, whereas HOTD might run for many more seasons to come. So far I'm very pleased and eager to learn what S2 has in store for us.

What is crazy is if Rhaenrya did choose not to go to war like she was considering the targaryen dynasty may never have ended. At least not in 150 years time anyway. But Daemon would never let that slide.

The only thing I had an issue with was how quickly Rhaenyra found out her son was killed. It seems like it would have taken some time because Aemond was the only witness.

Dragon body parts washing ashore, but also it's almost certain that there was someone who noticed Aemond leaving and following him, right after Lord Baratheon saw Aemond's violent intent. Makes it fairly clear.

I never took the prophecy miscommunication as being the main plot driver. It’s the biggest misconception I’ve seen. Saying "you will make a fine queen" doesn't mean Alicent completely changed her mind & gave up on a 20 year old fear/grudge. It more likely was a heartfelt gesture where she got carried away in the moment. The coup was always gonna happen because of all the primogeniture/dynastic reasons. The prophecy was simply used by Otto & others as a propaganda pretext and by Alicent as a self-deluding tool of moral justification. Which goes along with her show character of "trying to hide behind the cloak of righteousness". It was her trying to convince herself (not others), what she was doing was moral & right. What one might call “house of accidents and misunderstandings” is but a quintessential Greek tragedy.

Sending the boys alone was not a great idea. Especially as they had no bargaining power. Arrax could have just flown directly home at top speed, no way the larger dragon could catch up.

I am just happy the people behind this show did not screw it up. I don't want perfection. I want a show made by people who believe in the source material, and everyone has their own take on how to interpret the source material. So of course, it's not going to be perfect. I can't wait for season 2.
