I was talking to my coworker this morning, and tbh this season definitely had its issues but it could have been salvageable. If they had switched episode 7 with episode 8, and added in rhaena actually claiming sheepstealer with everyone heading off for battle I think it would have added the suspense and anticipation this episode lacked. The absence of anything of great substance happening doesn’t make for a good finally imo

Helaena said that Aegon would sit on the wooden throne. Not the Iron Throne. Of course, there are at least two thrones of driftwood: on Driftmark and in Pyke. And we can imagine him being transported around on a wheelchair or a litter. But what if she really means that he would be the Three-Eyed Raven before Brynden Rivers? A cripple, like Bran Stark, a Targaryen blood, like Brinden Rivers. We were shown the Three-Eyed Raven (Brynden Rivers with his brithmark, specifically) for a reason, weren't we? In the books he dies by poisoning, but with Larys Strong involved you can never be sure.

I was really hoping this last episode would seal this season off with a bow. Let me tell you, it did not. The entire season we are hinted at and teased about a battle at Herenhall. A battle with Daemon and Aemond. Daemon's building his army all season while tripping balls just so he can put aside his obsession with the crown and follow Rhaenyra. We only see one battle at Rooks Rest. The rest we're either told about or we just see the aftermath. Then at the season finale nothing happens no battle no nothing all we got was more exposition.

The book was based on an in-universe book. Rhaenerya even says to her, "history will paint you the villain." i.e., the book is what got written down in Westeros history, the TV show is what actually happened.

I'm glad they wrapped it up where they did. Ep 7 felt like it could have finished there, but getting the extra establishment of people choosing their lives over power will have a massive theme for next season i reckon. Definitely the best TV I've watched in a long time. Thanks ScreenCrush for being the best resource for background info on this show!

the ending with Alicent was a sunrise, Rhaenyra was woken up while she was asleep. It has a very different thematic tone than a sunset

The Alicent shot at the end is very reminiscent of Kendall at the end of succession. In the same way they both allowed metaphorical judgement in the form of water to take them- alicent in the lake and Kendall in the pool- they now have to accept their realities. Macbeth like

The episode was great and they are doing a fine job at the storytelling this season! People complained about the last 2 seasons of GoT and not look, they still complain about storytelling. If you didnt feel anything in the last 5 mins of the show, you shouldn't even be watching.

Alicent Hightower is absolutely horrible. She shamed ostracized and demonized Rhaenyra and her little sons every chance she got when she had power and now when that power is taken away from her ,she betrays her own creation,her own family. She is even worse than a traitor

Yeah, I caved back in the adpocalypse of 2020 and just started paying for premium. I absolutely hate giving Google money, but I hate watching 8 minute long ads to see a 10 min video even more. I think that's kind of the point. From the perspective of KZbin, at least. Idk if creators still make money from videos with ads when people who have premium view them, tbh.

Man there were so many awesome moments in this Season ender. I think the bit that really got me is when Daemon's Harrenhal arc finally pays off. Alys Rivers, who kind of seems like a Lady Macbeth type character this season, turns out to be engineering all this guilt tripping stuff for Daemon for a reason: to make him have his Loki moment - he is simply playing a part in a bigger story as fate wills it. It is really like a Loki TV series parallel: Free Will vs Determinism. Daemon is the kind of guy who always chose free will, who did what he want for his own personal gain, whose ego was as big as the sky, and after being shown all these guilt tripping nightmares and finally a glimpse of the long past to the future where he sees his own death and what comes after, it finally dawns on him that he has to give up his shot for the crown to let Rhae be queen, in order for the Targaryen ancestry to continue which would lead to Dani who will stop the Long Night as seen Game of Thrones. And that's a huge sacrifice for him since he has been chasing the crown all his life and was bitter at Rhae for being given it without her even asking. Also that HUGE scene where Alicent goes to Rhae in desperation, and how the tables have turned. When Rhae went to Alicent trying to stop the war, Alicent was like 'tough, too bad' and she said to Rhae's face that she was going to continue upholding the lie that Aegon her son was meant to sit the throne instead of Rhae. It was than Rhae finally accepted that 'well this is war then'. And now in this reversal, Alicent goes to Rhae saying how she's 'saw the light and I just want this madness to end and I want out.' which is very late to come back and say 'sorry' because so much harm has been done, Alicent proposed a surrender and Rhae is like 'uh did you forget that your son killed my son AND Rhaenys and now that you're losing you want to stop playing the game?' but also deep down inside, I mean, its like they were childhood friends, BFFs, there's still a tiny place inside both of their hearts that still love each other as people but because of how terrible everything has been for both sides, its like its just unforgiveable at this point and impossible to reconcile. And Rhae goes Son for a Son and calls for Alicent to give up Aegon to be killed by Team Black. And Rhae somehow is still sympathetic knowing that Alicent will be written as a pure villain for selling out her own kingdom to the opposing side, and that only both of them know what really went down, but history will be unkind. And so the deal is made that Alicent and Helaena will be spared but Aegon must die. And I think as a kind of desperation to be free and to escape everything, Alicent asks Rhae to run away from it all with her, as if they've reverted to their kid selfs, and Rhae is like 'no I can't, I am the Queen'. Which is a reversal of what they both used to be like as kids. Rhae was the free spirited one who was passionate and did as she liked, while Alicent was the good girl responsible one who put duty before everything else. And now its flopped, but its too late, things have progressed on to the point of no return.
