In our last easter egg video we broke down the opening credits which have changed significantly since episode 1 adding in all of the children of allicent and rhaenyra.
The episode opens with Luke looking at the table map of the seven kingdoms, where Jace was struggling to learn Valyrian a couple episodes ago. Just as Jace has trouble with Valyrian, Luke claims that he gets sea sick and shouldn’t be her to driftmark. Both boys are struggling because they have that Strong blood in their veins.
Now this table is called the painted table. It was made by Aegon the conqueror, and it's where he planned his conquest of the seven kingdoms. In the book it was 50 feet long, so it's been shortened a bit for the show. We saw both Stannis and Daerys plan their wars around a similar table in a different room. Could be that they moved the same table to a room with a better view, or maybe this table will be symbolically destroyed during this series.
Luke begins this episode touching the island of driftmark, because he’s not sure of himself. He says that he’ll ruin everything-and by the end of the episode, he proves himself right. He was ill-equipped to make a speech to Boros Baratheon. And this battle is really the beginning of the Targaryen civil war-and it was all foreshadowed by this first scene.
Luke goes on to say that driftmark should have gone to his uncle Vaemond, who was trying to be made the rightful heir to the Iron throne a couple episodes ago, before Daemon loosened his tongue. Vaemond is one of many second sons in this show-in fact you can say that all of these events are shaped by second sons.
See, second sons don;t stand to inherit any power, so they’re more ambitious. Second sons in this show include Otto, Daemon, Vaemond, Aemond, Larys-and all of these people play pivotal roles in escalating this conflict because they feel like they have something to prove.
Luke definitely feels like he has to prove himself as a valyrion, because he hates boats. He mentions that the sea snake was a great sailor-and this is how he made his fortune. The sea snake made seven legendary voyages across Essos that made him one of the wealthiest men in the seven kingdoms. We can actually see monuments to his voyages in driftmark, here.
This scene with Rhaenyra and Luke is very tender, as she tries to be the same guiding hand that her dad was for her, when she was unsure of herself. Luke says he’s not perfect like her, which is very sweet. We’ve seen Rhayra since she was his age, and we know that she is far from perfect, and has made her own mistakes.
The Rhaneys arrive from King’s landing and drop the news of episode 9. She says the king died 2 days ago, and in the book they left him to rot for about a fortnight until the smell was unbearable.
Now immediately Daemon assumes that they killed his brother, and the shock sends Rhaenyra into an early labor.
She didn’t want to be a kin slayer-and I think she would rather her family just stay out of this whole war.
So Daemon begins to plan a war while Rhaneyra is in the middle of another bloody struggle-childbirth. Rhanyera’s labor is intercut with flashes of a dragon, and there’s a few ways to interpret this. Friday we put out a video that explained how the targaryens ability to control the magic was tied to aegon;s prophecy and the long night. And when they stopped fighting for that cause, the magic of the dragons withered away. So you could read these visions as the blood of the drgaon beinfg angry at the targryans, and forcing a miscarriage.
IN the books, she gives birth to a malformed baby with scales and a tail. Which is how the witch mirri described danery’s baby in game of thrones. IN fact the book claims that Rhanerya was yelling “get this monster out of me,” but the show has her yelling get out to the midwives. Remember, the book is written based on the accounts of unreliable narrators, so it's interesting to see the details that the show changes.

Daemon was a better man out in Pentos. Proximity to the crown is corrosive to him. I'm a mom. I cannot imagine losing a baby and then my child all in the same week. It broke my heart. That, and Rhaenyra learning about her beloved father's death. Luce's little legs running to his dragon was just tragic. He looked so confused and scared. Emma D'arcy & co. did a phenomenal job. Great show!

Wouldn’t you attribute the same pain Rhaenyra is feeling to Daemon? After all, he lost a brother and a child too. Daemon is in fact ready to reclaim the throne, for the rightful heir; first his brother and now his niece. I don’t see Daemon hungering the throne for himself, at all.

One easy to miss easter egg, is that when Jaehaerys says" Send us" to Rhaenyra, it is a subtle callback to Ep.2 when Rhaenyra said "Send us (the dragonriders). It will be a show of force", during the small council meeting regarding the Stepstones.

This technology was designed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and they named it StageCraft, and it was first implemented to shoot The Mandalorian. Since then this technology has revolutionized on-set virtual production and has been used by the productions of The Batman, Star Wars disney+ shows, MCU films. While the volume used for filming House Of The Dragon isn’t ILM’s Stagecraft, the tech behind uses the same concept.

2 things I’ve noticed that you missed. Last episode Daemon placed the crown on his brother’s head when it had fallen as he stumbled up the stairs. This episode Daemon placed the crown on Raynera’s head. His loyalty to the two people who wore this crown. When Daemon tells Raynera that Luke had been killed, you see her crouching forward in pain and clutching her womb like she did when she birthed her still born baby. Learning of Luke’s death was her, physically losing her baby again. Any mother will tell you that no matter how old their children are, they will always be their babies. Each child is an extension of oneself.

This might mean nothing, she has just delivered a stillborn child within the last 48 hours, crying would exacerbate the pain, it absolutely could be that, or it could’ve just been that she was in physical pain because she was in physical pain in that moment. The crown thing shouldn’t be looked too deeply into, it wasn’t written in the storyline, so there’s no reason people should think they’re connected, it was Matt Smith. This was the issue with GOT fans in general, they will find things that actually make no sense to fill in gaps that didn’t need filling in and when the storyline created in their heads wasn’t continued on the show they get annoyed, even though it was never in the show. Is inclusion of these would’ve been dumb, most men aren’t aware of the pain that happens when a womb shrinks, let alone that it gets worse with each child you have, so having someone mansplain a woman’s body is silly, the crown thing just makes no sense knowing it was ad-libbed and they likely realised it.

This essentially shows how kind rhaenyra died that day, and the ruthless black queen of westeros was born through tragedy with this it'll show how rhaenyra closed off her heart to basically everyone except family but as her family die one by one in the war it'll only make her more cold hearted as she left with no one to trust.

Love these videos! One other small mistake, you said the Cannibal is the largest living dragon at the time, when I believe it is actually Vhagar (effectively demonstrated in this episode during the fight with Arrax). This is why, despite having "more" dragons, the blacks were still hesitant in the Dance of Dragons to fight directly with Aemond and Vhagar.

Cannibal is actually the largest dragon to exist in ASoIaF world. He is even older than Balerion, and remained wild, free. So he grew larger than the Black Dread himself. Vhagar is the second largest alive during the Dance, with Vermithor being the third.

Even though it's all second and third hand account in "Fire and Blood" every conclusion points to Vhagar being the largest and the oldest after Balerion. I've seen some argue that you can't rule out the Cannibal being the largest because there's not a lot of information to confirm one way or another, but I haven't seen anything from source material about the Cannibal being the largest

You mixed up the twins and which one is on which side also rheanyra’s mom was an Arryn of the veil not a tully. Vermithor is also smaller than vaghar not the biggest we’ve seen it may be the scariest tho

@@562KobraGT Vermithor is indeed the second largest dragon at the time. He also made the mistake that Cannibal is the largest. Cannibal was the largest of the wild dragons, but still smaller than Vhagar and Vermithor.

I noticed two things during the scene where Rhaenyra tries to tell Daemon the prophecy and he chokes her. • The first point, the fact that Daemon does not know the prophecy alleviates a lot of doubt in Rhaenyras mind. It tells her that her father never intended for Daemon to succeed him. • The second point (which I haven't heard anyone else talk about), this give Rhaenyra the legitimacy she needs to challenge Aegons claim. If she somehow finds out that Aegon doesn't know the prophecy, then it confirms his ascension was a Hightower plot, as Viserys would never have named Aegon his heir without telling him the prophecy as well.

Love your last two video breakdowns, particularly the theory/thoughts on why the magic dwindled out and eventually the dragons ceased to exist. Keep in mind, the Red Priests believe that the dragons are creatures & instruments of R'hllor. Meaning that their purpose would be to be weaponized against the great other/the white walkers. So if we assume this to be true, the Targaryens are the chosen people to lead the war against the white walkers. But in-fighting and narcism gets in the way...eventually leading to the fall of the dragons.

@@aminahmajied3373 that’s the thing, smaller dragons are a lot faster, Vhagar wouldn’t have stood a chance of catching Arrax, his only chance was to flee. It’s written in the books that should there have been clear skies, Vhagar wouldn’t have stood a chance.

@@kirstybrown1185 actually they're not faster. They're more maneuverable. With the much larger wings it allows you to go a lot faster. Which was demonstrated with how aemond had to leave the castle after luc and still caught up. While also being able to fly around him in circles when scaring him

the creators kept saying that this season would be a slow burn and although I agree it was a slow burn it was a good burn and I really enjoyed this first season. He ending look to the camera made me immediately think of the younger Rhae doing that and it was well done on the actress' part because she brought back the fire in the her eye that young Rhae had and something that was missing from the older actress but its clear she still has it. its true that whenever a Targaryen is born the Gods flip a coin (or whatever that saying is) but I think its even more complex than that because this series is showing that they can flip back and forth. Both Daemon and Rhaenyra have shown this as well as the other Targaryens. cant wait for next season. oh also the ending scene with Rhagar and the other dragon was awesome. I hate to see the smaller dragon go. it was pretty lol

I really liked the different pace between this Last episode and the "Green Council" episode. The Green Council had a much more tumultous pace, whereas this one was slower and more controlled. Seems to me it reflect the "justness" of both sides.
