House of the Dragon | S2 Episode 6 Recap & Review

It was Episode 6 of House of the Dragon and it was another exhausting one where we see the the beginning of an Aemond Targaryen reign as King, Larys the Clubfoot wavering allegiance, Alicent Hightower contemplates her time as a mother and a ruler, Rhaenyra questions everything about her life, Darklyn gets BBQ'd, Daemon Targaryen continues to have his trip sessions, and Aegon II doesn't want to be turned into another Gypsy Rose in House of the Dragon...what a great spinoff of Game of Thrones!

I actually quite liked Seasmoke returning to Driftmark. He spent a lot of time there and may have been looking for his former rider. Failing to find him he "sensed" Addam with the same blood line. He took a sniff of Adam and thought yep you're my man.

Rewatch that scene where Seasmoke corners Addam at the end of their chase sequence and Addam is backed up against the rocks! Once they look into each other's eyes you can see Addams breathing slow down and he becomes calm, that's the difference between Addam and Sir Darkling. Addam became calm and looked Seasmoke right in the eye with no fear Sir Darkling wouldn't look Seasmoke in the eye and was very timid in his moves and gestures. You have to be confident and brave in order to claim a dragon but I also think part of it is the dragon chooses its rider.

I believe Tyrion will be a secret Targ in the books (if they're ever finished) and if you recall when Tyrion went into the catacomb to unchain the dragons Raegal took a sniff and bent his neck instead of roasting him, I think he recognised Tyrion as being related to Dany.

I actually teared up when Daemon was supporting Viserys in his dreams as he should have…So good to see Paddy again! Aemon sheesh!…l didn’t see him portrayed in such a pointed way! Damn he is doing Aegon dirty! And I think you are right about Rhaena/Nettles story line. For sure!!! I thought this episode was better than last weeks. My only problem with this episode is the fact that most likely we won’t get nettles and her storyline will be merged with Rhaena’s which is a big mistake. Without giving any spoilers, I know that Nettles’s story doesn’t affect the plot like the other dragon seeds, but I feel that she brings a different perspective when it comes to dragon warfare.

I also liked the episode. Certainly no major complains of mine other than the Daemon plotline dragging, but I think a conclusion is coming there thankfully. Absolutely, I think Nettles is a good addition (like Lady Stoneheart in GOT) but not a NEEDED one for the overall story.

Hopefully the writers will find a way to make it make sense since Rhaena and Nettles’s storylines end in completely different ways. Absolutely masterful PR move by Rhaenyra and Mysaria by sending over empty boats laden with food to the Blackwater!! It demonstrates that even though her forces are the ones causing the Blockade, its an action taken by her against the Greens, the Hightowers, and the Highborn lords who support them, to deprive their armies of weapons, aid and supplies, and not against the commonfolk who have no part in their treachery. She wants to tell the people that even though she is waging a war against Aegon, she does not intend to harm the innocent and impoverished masses who live under his rule with no choice. It also re-assures the masses that Rhaenyra thinks of them as her own subjects and cares about them like a ruler should, even though she is not directly ruling over them, and that in any action of war that she takes, she will not harm the Smallfolk. It also paints her as more compassionate than the Greens who have literally hoarded supplies and continued living in luxury whilst aggravating the food crisis. Absolutely loving HOTD delve into this "asymnetrical warfare" like it is done in real life in many ongoing world conflicts today. One thing I like is the contrast in Otto Hightower and Mysaria, who are both masterfully talented in spreading Propaganda. Otto flaunts his achievements and Rhaenyra's blunders by making a grand, flashy show of things (Like Aegon's coronation or Jaeherys's funeral), while Mysaria is more insidious and under the carpet, relying on shady characters and under the table deals to get her message through, making it harder to catch (Like whispers you may hear while drinkibg at a bar).

What a great episode, I had to rewatch 2.5 times before spilling my thoughts. There was no way to know what gone on between Aemond and Aegon and Rheanyra and Lady Misery because in the books all we get is someone’s account of things. Nothing gets Rheanyra hotter than a cool story about insects and grape. As far as Daemon’s plot line and what is going on in his head I’m still not sure about. I’m also not a fan of Seasmoke “choosing” the Hall bastard instead of Rheanyra calling on seeds like in the book, but I see where they are going with this. We might yet see her call many over to claim the other dragons. 2 more episodes left in this season and we will probably have to wait a long while for season 3. Dunk and Egg is next year, I have a feeling we will not get 2 shows in 1 year let’s be honest. Thank you as always and see you next time!

Excellent episode - I'm impressed you watched it almost 3 times! Exactly. There's a lot of things in the show that we couldn't know from the books. The show is fleshing it all out ya know so I don't get too upset. The Hull bastard I don't mind, but I would've preferred the trial and error situation probably like you're saying. I can't wait to see some Dunk and Egg stuff and I think it's gonna be good!

@TheBattProductions Team Black is boring, tbh. They don't do much with what characters they have at all. Why couldn't Jace have stayed up north for some of the season? Had an interesting plot line with Sarah Snow and the Starks? Something like what they did with Daemon? Why not give Baela something to do? Maybe pair her with Corlys a bit more, give her some scenes with Rhaena before she leaves? Most of what Team Black has done is nothing and Rhaenyra is the worst of all since she doesn't do anything then gets mad when people tell her that. To me, the kiss was meant to make Rhaenyra seem more interesting but I think it just makes her look awful. Mysaria just shared her abuse story and Rhaenyra takes advantage of that moment of vulnerability. And what can Mysaria do? Nothing. The power dynamic doesn't even allow her to protest. Rhaenyra is also a cheater. She is married and as far as we know, Daemon has been nothing but loyal to her, (in their marriage at least). Now, if they play this off like Mysaria was the one manipulating Rhaenyra (by her being the “Yes man” to soothe Rhaenyra’s massive ego) or/and Rhaenyra has to deal with real consequences for her infidelity- then yes, this could work. But the show wants you to like Team Black and think Rhaenyra is a “good” person when, lol no. She is not. Team Green has more interesting dynamics and complex characters that we actually get to spend some time with. I don't like what they're doing with Aemond and Helaena 100% but I don't hate it either.

It wasn't an 8x great grandmother twice removed. It was just his grandmother's grandmother. That makes him is 1/32 Targaryen. That is 3.125% Valyrian blood if we assume the Targaryen princess was pure Valyrian, (unlike any Targaryen since Jaehaerys I's generation, as his mother was a Velaryon whose mother came from House Massey, a family of mixed First Men and Andal blood.) I don't think there is any other reference to a Princess Ariana. The book has a pretty complete pedigree of Targaryens after the Conquest. There are a lot of gaps from the century of Blood, but I don't think he would have been called a princess then. Personally I was hoping they would go for an even more remote Targaryen ancestry and claim that it was a Darklyn who was the petty lord who put himself forward at the Council of 101 as a potential heir to Jaehaerys on the grounds that he was descended from a younger daughter of Lord Gaemon the Glorious, who was the Old King's great-great-great-great-grandfather.

Seasmoke is so damn cool. Even when he is being a bad boy. I think we’ve come to end of the flashbacks for Daemon, thank goodness. It just a shame it took this long. I did like that last scene with Paddy. I’m glad he got to come back for an episode. It meant so much to him. Definitely Larys was a highlight. The kiss was forced and right now I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m open, let’s see what they do with it. The same goes for Nettles but I think I’m okay with it. It would be so great if we could get some reconciliation between Daemon and his daughters. The writing is definitely not as tight this year. Perhaps they had no time for rewrites or the strike affected it. Dragon Demands said there a couple writers “in training” Still, it looks gorgeous and the music is always great!

Seasmoke is SUPER cool. I love Seasmoke. Larys was a major highlight for me...I felt flashbacks of that Baelish speech from S1 "I'm not going to play their game...I'm not going to fight them. I'm going to f**k them" Funny enough, I think the girl kiss wasn't initially in the script but I think it worked its way in. I was fine with the kiss because they both trauma bonded and ya know, sexual energy comes from that. I think Rhaenyra low key wanted Alicent as a kid, so makes sense she'd be sort of into girls at least. The writing isn't quite as good as last season, but hey I dig it still thankfully!

Valyrian blood does not make one a dragon Rider. Each noble family had their own way of bonding with/controlling Dragons. The main way was Blood Magic. Which the Targaryens used. Verlarion’s and Celtagar’s NEVER rode Dragons. They pledged to House Targaryens because they had Dragons. I don’t mind this change, because in the Books it was insinuated that Laenor was Addam. And yes, that would be ridiculous. But then just put a throw away line in to say that Pledged families to Dragon Riders can now Ride Dragons… just one line.

To be fair, the Velaryons and Targaryens intermarried so often that it is better to think of them as just one family at this point. Almost every time that a Targaryen married someone other than a brother or sister, they married Velaryons. We are told they intermarried multiple times in the century of Blood and even before the Doom. The only cases in which we know the names of the spouses are Coryls and Rhaenys, Alyssa Velaryon and Aenys Targaryen (parents of Old King Jaehaerys and his siblings), and Velaena Velaryon and Aerion Targaryen (mother of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives). Those marriages mean all the Targaryens we seen have mostly Velaryon blood, but would not confirm Coryls has Targaryen blood. Velaena Velaryon's mother is however stated to have been born a Targaryen. It is likely Coryls descends from Velaena's mom, although he could descend from her cousins instead.

The pacing is so slow its so annoying, I'm so done with the sub plots. Thank the lord that tully guy is dead so things can pick up a bit. Briefly thought those pr ladies in kings landing would be the replacement for the shephard, this would be a time to connect the 2 or set the scene for propoganda, but im afraid theyre turning it into a woke thing which personally isn't something i want to see, takes away from the main story. Ulfs drinking ways are already being introduced. Rhanearya and Mysarias schemes r getting annoying, like get on with it God. I think theyre saving the meaty scenes for s3 like tumbleton, kings landing and daeron too. Which is sad cuz s2 doesnt have much to go by especially with 2 eps left. So we have seasmoke great, r we going to get the other 2 and rhaenas nettles story in these eps too? Rhaeyras slap was hilarious and much needed, larys had a good moment we see a vulnerable side to him for sure, especially since his alliance is important with aegon later on. So happy to see the dog again. Still waiting for elinda too, like where did she go?

I think she lost her perspective on what to do as a mother probably. I mean her kids ended up bad. Helaena is a special case because she seems to have always been a loner who gets fascinated by oddities, but the boys I don't think got the right attention.

But the Greens are the ones sitting in the Chair. Ultimately it is the King/Monarch's problem to protect the people. And to make it worse, the Greens locked everyone in the city. So not only do they not have food, but Aemond is forcing them to starve with no hope of finding their own food.

Just lackluster in story telling progression and catering to modern politics for inclusiveness. Destroyed Daemon’s character, Rhaenyra pretending to be hardcore and having her sneak to Kings Landing like she’s capable of it. The Green’s story is the only saving grace, which sucks because after season 1 I was totally rooting for the Blacks 🙁. Just starting to feel so uninterested in the Targaryen’s lineage with the progression of this arc. I wish they would’ve committed to Aegon the Conqueror’s story and gave us a series on that.
