House of the Dragon has deepened the lore of Game of thrones, exploring not just the Targaryan dynasty, but also the lore of the dragons. The dragons' extinction was always a mystery, but now we have the answer: the dragons were always tied to Aegon's prophecy of the long night. In this video we explain this theory, the history of the dragons, the faiths of Game of Thrones, and how it all finally makes sense.

#HouseOfTheDragon #EasterEggs #dragons
The dragons held on for another 2 decades after this war, but they became sickly, small, and died out. How this happened was always a mystery, but now House of the dragon has given us some clues about how the dragons died out, why the Targaryans were able to control them, and how all of this connects to the lord of light, the ice zombies, and the prophecy that was fulfilled by Jon snow and daenerys targaryen. I’m here to break this theory down and explain what all of this really means.
Now first I have to address that the dragon extinction is addressed in the book, a feast for crows, Archmaester Marwyn tells Samwell Tarly: "Who do you think killed all the dragons the last time around? Gallant dragonslayers armed with swords? The world the Citadel is building has no place in it for sorcery or prophecy or glass candles, much less for dragons."
But I have to note that this is never confirmed by George RR Martin himself. This is one maester, telling Sam that the people of his order did away with the dragons. On the surface this makes sense. The maesters are all about science and reason, and they probably thought that by ridding the world of dragons they were asserting reason over superstition. But it’s unlikely that the masters could have poisoned these dragons in a way that prevented their eggs from hatching.
See, basically, the dragons stopped laying eggs that hatched, and the ones that did hatch were sickly and never grew. And as we saw in house of the dragon, the maesters had no interactions with the dragons-that was the province of the dragon keepers. In a little bit I’m going to talk about the efforts to revive dragons, which should disprove that their extinction was a conspiracy by the maesters.
Instead, I think that the extinction of the dragons is tied directly to Aegon’s prophecy, the secret of the targaryen dynasty. This was the major reveal of House of the Dragon that recontextualized the entire original series. The reason Aegon even bothered to conquer Westeros is because he had a dream of the long night [and that his house would unite against it, episode 1].
He called this dream a song of ice and fire, and had it carved into his dagger by Valyrian smiths. In a little bit I’ll talk about how this prophecy came true in Game l of thrones-and the magical forces that guided Aegon along this path. But I think this prophecy also explains why the dragons allow themselves to be commanded by the targaryens. Remember what Viseryssaid [they think we control dragons..we don’t].
A little backstory on the dragons. Though there are differing accounts, most people agree that the Valryians discovered dragons in a place called the fourteen flames-basically a ring of fourteen active volcanoes. They bonded with the dragons through blood magic binding their blood to the dragons. And this event supposedly occurred before the original Long Night, thousands of years ago.
The Targaryens have something in their blood that allows them to bond with these dragons. They are tied to this magic of old valyria, where the dragons came from. IN the same way the stark kids are tied to their direwolves. The dragons are guided by powerful magical forces-and the dragons’ purpose is to end the long night. The Targaryens are able to control the dragons as long as this is their goal. It’s even possible that the dragons are aware of this. After all, they are intelligent [tyrion dragons clip]
We’ve also seen dragons take on the temperament of their riders. When Daenerys was in Mereen, she struggled to contain the revolts. And that is when she also struggled to contain Drogon’s appetites [dude crying about his dead kid].
So Aegon’s dream is passed down to his heirs [it is a secret, etc.]. But the Targaryen civil war is when the family started to rule for their own lust for power, and not for the good of the realm. They forget their purpose is to end the long night. In fact, iot wouldnt; surprise me if Rhayra is never able to pass on the sercey to anyone else in her family, so the secret dies with her.

Well now hold on, it makes since because the line of passing down is broken from Rhanera to her son Aegon 3rd, he was also very anti dragon, freaking out when Baelas(?) Dragon returns with her to visit him. You would imagine he would not have been, had his mother had a chance to tell her last living son (whom would have been a toddler last he saw her) about the prophecy and the duty of the Targaryens

Rhaegar knew the prophecy which led him to pursue Lyanna Stark - to combine ice with fire - so the prophesy couldn’t have died with Rhaenyra.

It's implied that he found out about the prophecy in an old scroll, so the passing of the prophecy from ruler to heir probably *did* die with Rhaenyra, or, more likely, Aegon III. Rhaegar just uncovered it through written history later

What you (and Brian) missed is after the dance of the dragons, a maester is hand of the king, regent of the king, and the only member of the small council. In this period (about 6 months), little is recorded but much is possible. Including disbanding an order designed to protect dragons that are no longer around. Poisoning dragon eggs that are left on the dragon mount is possible. This is why Danaerys's 3 eggs all hatch - they were stolen before the civil war and kept in Bravos

I think what maester Marwin was trying to explain the conspiracy of creating and developing the conditions for the dance of the dragons. Basically have the Targaryen battle each other so all the dragons kill themselves. This also makes sense because the Hightower family, is the patron house of both the citadel and the faith in old town.

Have you also considered simple habitat destruction? The fourteen flames provided an elaborate heated cave system, and the Westerosi dragons sort of make due with Dragon Stone’s smaller volcanic vents, but it’s certainly not their native adaptation. I think it’s interesting to think of them as a hyper-specialized megafauna that just couldn’t adapt well past The Doom. That’s one of my favorite parts of the universe as well, that all these mega fauna, dire wolves, mammoths, saber toothed cats, and other human species (children, giants, Skagosi and I’m assuming Neanderthals, Denisovans, etc.) are all making some unexplained resurgence, or at the least being pushed out of their last bastions by the Night King.

I like the idea that the long night hit Essos as well of Westeros, since its believed the world is round and the lands of always winter may connect to the gray waste somehow and the 5 forts are the equivalent of the wall. Azhor Ahai was the Hero that won the battle in Essos and the last hero was his counterpart in Westeros. that's why Quaithe in the books tells Dany that to reach west she must travel east. so they can fight the long night in the 2 fronts
@made-line7627

Agreed. Surely it occurred in the East too. If it didn't, it makes the conflict with the Others seem smaller. The second Long Night wouldn't destroy humanity, it would only destroy Westeros.

Essos also has an "equivalent" of the wall with the five forts and they even pre-date the original Long Night. While they aren't necessarily responding to the same threat, it's a similar idea wherein these massive structures were constructed to preserve the realm of the living from "others".

Another thing that could tie this theory together. Azor Ahai sacrificed his wife, someone he dearly loved, whose soul inhabited his flaming sword. Dany and Jon likewise sacrificed people important to them for their flaming swords in that Dany rides Drogon named for her husband and Jon lost his real parents and rides Rheagal named after his father Rheagar Targaryen. Since it’s implied throughout the show that Drogon has part of Khal Drogo’s soul in him that the same applies to Rheagal. Interesting is that if true that would mean Viserion has a part of her douchey brothers soul which could explain why he was so easy for the Night King to turn, the Lord of light knew that his desire for the throne was out of selfish reasons like the Targaryens who fought the civil war so he abandoned the Dragon to the ice and was doomed to die.

Rhaegar didn't give up on his son aegon being the prince that was promised. He also believed that the dragon must have 3 heads therefore he must have 3 children (a son and 2 daughters just like aegon the conqueror and his 2 sisters) so when after having their 2nd child his wife Elia was too weak to give him a 3rd child he chose to turn elsewhere (Lyanna Stark) to have a 3rd child with to fullfil the prophecy. There is even evidence that he did this with his wife's knowledge and blessing

Yeah I agree, it even sounds like a classic GOT plot thread. A Targaryen tries to force a prophecy to be true, and it causes problems. In theory Rhaegar would have been fine, but by making a child with the woman that Baratheon loved he started a civil war. I'd like to add on that in the books, Tyrion is implied not to be Tywins son, as he has a purple eye and straggly white hair. Perhaps Rhaegar made Tyrion, and believed that he couldn't possibly be the prince that was promised, and went off to make John. But in the end, the 3 heads were Daehnerys Tyrion and John, his daughters had nothing to do with it.

Big hole in this theory is that the Targaryens and their dragons were linked before Aegon so his prophecy not being known wouldn't kill off the dragons. It is more likely that generations of inbreeding led to their demise, which mirrors Targaryens. I believe the number is something like 160 of a species to start off to prevent inbreeding. Before the doom, there were many dragons. After there were 3. Just like any species (Galapogos Tortouise) they would die off after enough generations

A small correction: at 1:37 you say that the Maesters are all about "science and reason", when it seems they're instead more invested in maintaining power. They exclude women from their order (irrational), they attach themselves to lords and control which ravens/mail gets sent in the country, and they are suggested to have manipulated major events throughout the series. For example, the Archmaester helps the Lannisters stay on top and, in the House of the Dragon at least, it's suggested that they either don't treat the king's wounds properly or coordinate with the Hightowers to maintain a handle over the king. The Maesters are ostensibly independent from national politics but they're far far from it. Recall also how a maester tried to kill Melisandre. That's not 'neutral' at all!

@pallen2645 Жыл бұрын
@@Sardonac That was one example: sex in particular is a source of power, see Melisandre's manipulation of Stannis' life force, probably impossible for a man. The point is, by limiting their members to men, they also limit the ways that magic can used against them. But it's important to remember that the Citadel is not a monolith around the role of magic: it's not a coincidence that the one archmaester who wanted to steer the Citadel towards the use of magic was also the one who knowingly brought a woman into the order. Because excluding women makes sense if you're treating magic as a danger, a weapon to be defended against. But if you're looking to WIELD that weapon your opinion is likely to be different.

The Prince that was Promised and azor ahai are DIFFERENT prophecies/legends. TPtwP seems to been a Westerosi legend/prophecy whereas Azor Ahai is from Essos. They likely have different sources even if they are talking about the same person. The prophecy doesn't say Azor Ahai will be reborn as TPtwP

Maybe after the dance of the dragons and the Targaryen civil war, the dragons or their eggs simply just didn't want to hatch. I don't know their family tree but I imagine that the dragons that were fighting and killing each other were loosely related to each other. Even if they weren't, they probably still didn't feel good about killing each other. Especially since, there was already only a small number of them that existed. On top of all that, the Targaryens and their dragons were seemingly very close and connected to each other. The Targaryens (and Velaryons) are the only people who can bond with and ride a dragon. They have an unexplainable connection. The Targaryens are the last and only link the dragons have to their home of Valyria. They remind them of their home. But long story short, the dragons have a family-like relationship with the dragons. They trusted them and felt comfortable around them because they remind them of home. So when the dance happens, the dragons are not only made to kill other dragons, but also Targaryens who are like family to them. To make it worse, the people making them do this are Targaryens. That must have been very conflicting. So.. After the Doom of Valyria, the dragons were almost extinct, but then they found a new purpose. They would protect and aid the Targaryens in their conquest of a new land. A land that one day, could reach the heights amd glory of old Valyria. Then the Targaryen Civil War happens and makes the dragons feel like nothing but a weapon. They thought that their purpose was to protect the Targaryens, but now they are trying to kill them, along with other dragons. They see that the family they were protecting is now killing them. When the war is over, they no longer have a purpose. Their will to exist is gone. The magic that has given them life is gone.. Until, I, Daenarys Stormborn of House Targaryen, First of her......

Given that the families of dragon riders still inbred even when there were other dragon riders to breed with, I think the blood magic that created the dragons were tied specially to each families' bloodline. So all the dragons we see in the story are Targaryen dragons, made with Targaryen blood. The dragons of the other bloodlines burned in the Doom with their riders. So yeah, they are LITERALLY related to their dragons and their dragons would also be all related to each other. It also explains why they sometimes have babies with scales and wings and such. They really do have the blood of the dragon and the dragons also have the blood of the Targaryens.

@@b1bbscraz3y From the sounds of it, Nettles is using sorcery to control her dragon. She's probably the only dragon rider we're aware of that isn't a Valyrian. It sounds like the Valyrians used horns and sorcery in the early days before they improved the process that tied the dragons to the blood of the riders.

Except in the show GOT which we know the book form has not been written yet, The dragons seemed useless against the Night king, and it wasn’t even a Targaryen that killed Him. Hopefully the books will line up better than Season 8 did.

What is clear is that whenever magic is involved, blood or death is also involved. I think it would be sort of fitting for the cruel world they live in if the gods they pray to are simply the way they reasoned all of the magic. When any of the characters are revived, its not free either, they feel like their soul has been stretched or they lose their empathy entirely. In old valerya, they had many blood mages that used slaves that would work until death. Most likely these slaves were used to make the dragons.

I wonder if the Targaryens allowed the dragons to die out, especially after the Dance. In House of Dragons, Vhaegar ate Lucerys and Vermax even when Aemond told her not to. They disobeyed and caused a war, and probably started eating each other. Or perhaps they tried to make sure the dragons didn't get too large as to turn on them again. A dragon listens to and obeys no one, not even a Targaryen. Dragons partner with humans. Or perhap humans are their pet. Dunno, either way, it really shows just how horrifying dragons are used in war, especially against each other. Dragons eating dragons, Targaryen killing Targaryens.

So would you say that to end the long night was to actually have a Targaryean and a Stark to be together to destroy the White Walkers?
@MissKashira
@MissKashira Жыл бұрын
I think a Targaryen was needed to bring dragons back into the world so they'd have their flaming sword. And I think Azor Ahai was the founder of house Stark after he offed his wife to make the sword needed to end the Long Night. So Jon and Dany coming together is like Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa coming back together with their fate repeating. Him being stark in the North and her being a dead mother of dragons.

I find it fitting that the dragons gave the Targaryens birth right and power to unite most of Westeros against the long night and full fill Aegons prophecy however once the prophecy was full filled, the dragons destroyed the iron throne along with the age of birth right and power for the Targaryens which allowed for a new age of democracy which gave all the kingdoms peace.
