House of the Dragon has deepened the lore of Game of thrones, exploring not just the Targaryan dynasty, but also the lore of the dragons. The dragons' extinction was always a mystery, but now we have the answer: the dragons were always tied to Aegon's prophecy of the long night. In this video we explain this theory, the history of the dragons, the faiths of Game of Thrones, and how it all finally makes sense.

The dragons held on for another 2 decades after this war, but they became sickly, small, and died out. How this happened was always a mystery, but now House of the dragon has given us some clues about how the dragons died out, why the Targaryans were able to control them, and how all of this connects to the lord of light, the ice zombies, and the prophecy that was fulfilled by Jon snow and daenerys targaryen. I’m here to break this theory down and explain what all of this really means.
Now first I have to address that the dragon extinction is addressed in the book, a feast for crows, Archmaester Marwyn tells Samwell Tarly: "Who do you think killed all the dragons the last time around? Gallant dragonslayers armed with swords? The world the Citadel is building has no place in it for sorcery or prophecy or glass candles, much less for dragons."
But I have to note that this is never confirmed by George RR Martin himself. This is one maester, telling Sam that the people of his order did away with the dragons. On the surface this makes sense. The maesters are all about science and reason, and they probably thought that by ridding the world of dragons they were asserting reason over superstition. But it’s unlikely that the masters could have poisoned these dragons in a way that prevented their eggs from hatching.
See, basically, the dragons stopped laying eggs that hatched, and the ones that did hatch were sickly and never grew. And as we saw in house of the dragon, the maesters had no interactions with the dragons-that was the province of the dragon keepers. In a little bit I’m going to talk about the efforts to revive dragons, which should disprove that their extinction was a conspiracy by the maesters.
Instead, I think that the extinction of the dragons is tied directly to Aegon’s prophecy, the secret of the targaryen dynasty. This was the major reveal of House of the Dragon that recontextualized the entire original series. The reason Aegon even bothered to conquer Westeros is because he had a dream of the long night [and that his house would unite against it, episode 1].
He called this dream a song of ice and fire, and had it carved into his dagger by Valyrian smiths. In a little bit I’ll talk about how this prophecy came true in Game l of thrones-and the magical forces that guided Aegon along this path. But I think this prophecy also explains why the dragons allow themselves to be commanded by the targaryens. Remember what Viseryssaid [they think we control dragons..we don’t].
A little backstory on the dragons. Though there are differing accounts, most people agree that the Valryians discovered dragons in a place called the fourteen flames-basically a ring of fourteen active volcanoes. They bonded with the dragons through blood magic binding their blood to the dragons. And this event supposedly occurred before the original Long Night, thousands of years ago.
The Targaryens have something in their blood that allows them to bond with these dragons. They are tied to this magic of old valyria, where the dragons came from. IN the same way the stark kids are tied to their direwolves. The dragons are guided by powerful magical forces-and the dragons’ purpose is to end the long night. The Targaryens are able to control the dragons as long as this is their goal. It’s even possible that the dragons are aware of this. After all, they are intelligent [tyrion dragons clip]
We’ve also seen dragons take on the temperament of their riders. When Daenerys was in Mereen, she struggled to contain the revolts. And that is when she also struggled to contain Drogon’s appetites [dude crying about his dead kid].
So Aegon’s dream is passed down to his heirs [it is a secret, etc.]. But the Targaryen civil war is when the family started to rule for their own lust for power, and not for the good of the realm. They forget their purpose is to end the long night. In fact, iot wouldnt; surprise me if Rhayra is never able to pass on the sercey to anyone else in her family, so the secret dies with her.
